When most peo\u00adple think of Aus\u00adtralia, they prob\u00ada\u00adbly think of the end\u00adless expans\u00ades of the out\u00adback rather than cramped con\u00addi\u00adtions. But this is exact\u00adly what Yilin Xu often has to deal with in his work: \u201cIn urban areas, many of our sub\u00adsta\u00adtions are very tight\u00adly built and can only be reached via nar\u00adrow access roads.\u201d Xu is respon\u00adsi\u00adble for the test\u00ading ser\u00advice at Aus\u00adgrid, the largest grid oper\u00ada\u00adtor on Australia\u2019s east coast, in a grid area cov\u00ader\u00ading approx\u00adi\u00admate\u00adly 22,275 square kilo\u00adme\u00adters, which also includes the metrop\u00ado\u00adlis of Syd\u00adney. The mea\u00adsure\u00adments car\u00adried out by his team of 21 test engi\u00adneer\u00ading offi\u00adcers are essen\u00adtial to enable Asset Man\u00adage\u00adment to bet\u00adter eval\u00adu\u00adate the con\u00addi\u00adtion of the oper\u00adat\u00ading equip\u00adment and react quick\u00adly in the event of impend\u00ading fail\u00adures, so that the lights do not go out for the more than four mil\u00adlion cus\u00adtomers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

To ensure that this remains the case, Xu need\u00aded a new test truck for mobile AC volt\u00adage test\u00ading of trans\u00adform\u00aders, switchgear and volt\u00adage con\u00advert\u00aders. \u201cOur cur\u00adrent test vehi\u00adcle dates back to the 1970s and is out\u00addat\u00aded,\u201d explains Xu. An impor\u00adtant require\u00adment: the test truck must not exceed a length of 11.2 meters and must have a small turn\u00ading cir\u00adcle so that it can dri\u00adve into the tight\u00adly built sub\u00adsta\u00adtions. Xu there\u00adfore turned to HIGHVOLT: \u201cWe have been work\u00ading togeth\u00ader for many years and are impressed by the high qual\u00adi\u00adty and pro\u00adfes\u00adsion\u00adal\u00adism. We already have a HIGHVOLT trail\u00ader in use for cable test\u00ading.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n

On the road: <\/strong>Grid oper\u00ada\u00adtor Aus\u00adgrid plans to use the new HIGHVOLT test truck to test trans\u00adform\u00aders, tap chang\u00aders and volt\u00adage con\u00advert\u00aders at around 30 \u2014 35 ser\u00advice jobs every year. \u00a9 James Horan<\/p><\/div>\n

It is one of 230 sub\u00adsta\u00adtions in Aus\u00adgrid\u2019s net\u00adwork area which sup\u00adply over four mil\u00adlion peo\u00adple with elec\u00adtric\u00adi\u00adty. \u00a9 James Horan<\/p><\/div>\n

Easy han\u00addling: <\/strong>The con\u00adcept of the test truck has been thought through down to the small\u00adest detail, mak\u00ading it easy for tech\u00adni\u00adcians to oper\u00adate. For exam\u00adple, the cables for the mains con\u00adnec\u00adtion can be eas\u00adi\u00adly unwound thanks to the inte\u00adgrat\u00aded cable drums. \u00a9 James Horan<\/p><\/div>\n

Play\u00ading it safe: <\/strong>Occu\u00adpa\u00adtion\u00adal safe\u00adty is very strict in Aus\u00adtralia.  For exam\u00adple, fold-out stairs must have rail\u00adings on both sides. The mate\u00adri\u00adals are also select\u00aded in such a way that no volt\u00adage can jump over. \u00a9 James Horan<\/p><\/div>\n

Proven tech\u00adnol\u00ado\u00adgy: <\/strong>HIGH\u00adVOLT\u2019s AC volt\u00adage test\u00ading sys\u00adtem is used by count\u00adless cus\u00adtomers and is the gold stan\u00addard for equip\u00adment test\u00ading. How\u00adev\u00ader, it has nev\u00ader before been housed so com\u00adpact\u00adly in such a small space. \u00a9 James Horan<\/p><\/div>\n

Mobile con\u00adtrol cen\u00adter: <\/strong>In the air-con\u00addi\u00adtioned cab\u00adin, tech\u00adni\u00adcians can oper\u00adate the sys\u00adtem, read val\u00adues and cre\u00adate reports. Anoth\u00ader prac\u00adti\u00adcal fea\u00adture is that the fre\u00adquen\u00adcy tests can be pre-pro\u00adgrammed. \u00a9 James Horan<\/p><\/div>\n

High voltage in a small space<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

At HIGHVOLT in Dres\u00adden, Andreas Thiede, Head of Inno\u00adva\u00adtions, and Anne Cholawa, Project Man\u00adag\u00ader, are very famil\u00adiar with AC volt\u00adage test\u00ading sys\u00adtems. This method exam\u00adines the dielec\u00adtric con\u00addi\u00adtion of the equip\u00adment. For this pur\u00adpose, an increased test fre\u00adquen\u00adcy and an increased test volt\u00adage are used to inves\u00adti\u00adgate whether par\u00adtial dis\u00adcharges occur in the object to be test\u00aded. If these exceed a cer\u00adtain lim\u00adit val\u00adue, this indi\u00adcates weak points in the insu\u00adla\u00adtion sys\u00adtem. Noth\u00ading spe\u00adcial for HIGHVOLT so far. How\u00adev\u00ader, the request from Aus\u00adtralia was also a first for Thiede and Cholawa. \u201cWe have pre\u00advi\u00adous\u00adly imple\u00adment\u00aded mobile test sys\u00adtems as a trail\u00ader or con\u00adtain\u00ader solu\u00adtion, but pack\u00ading the entire tech\u00adnol\u00ado\u00adgy onto a truck\u2014we\u2019ve nev\u00ader done any\u00adthing like this before,\u201d explains Thiede.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This is also where the fre\u00adquen\u00adcy con\u00advert\u00ader is locat\u00aded, which sets the test volt\u00adage and gen\u00ader\u00adates dif\u00adfer\u00adent test fre\u00adquen\u00adcies (from 0 to 200 Hertz) for the trans\u00adformer test. <\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t <\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t <\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t <\/div><\/span><\/a><\/div>\n\n\n\n

It was par\u00adtic\u00adu\u00adlar\u00adly tricky to fit all the com\u00adpo\u00adnents into a small space and to opti\u00admize the mass dis\u00adtri\u00adb\u00adu\u00adtion. In some cas\u00ades, it was real mil\u00adlime\u00adter work: \u201cThe box body had to be a max\u00adi\u00admum of two and a half meters. How\u00adev\u00ader, when it came from the coach\u00adbuilder, it was ten mil\u00adlime\u00adtres too wide, so we had to go at it again.\u201d The project was also chal\u00adleng\u00ading from Cholawa\u2019s point of view: \u201cThe Aus\u00adtralian safe\u00adty require\u00adments are very strict, the need for coor\u00addi\u00adna\u00adtion is high and the export and import is com\u00adplex\u201d. But in the end, the truck arrived safe\u00adly in Syd\u00adney Har\u00adbour.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Better testing possible<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Xu is delight\u00aded with the result. \u201cWith our old test\u00ading sys\u00adtem, we could only test at 50 hertz, now we are much more flex\u00adi\u00adble in terms of frequencies\u2014100 or 200 hertz are also pos\u00adsi\u00adble. This makes our mea\u00adsure\u00adment results much more accu\u00adrate.\u201d The truck is also quick\u00adly ready for use and easy to oper\u00adate: \u201cWe can pre-pro\u00adgram the fre\u00adquen\u00adcy tests and record the test data. That wasn\u2019t pos\u00adsi\u00adble before.\u201d And what Xu also real\u00adly appre\u00adci\u00adates is the tech\u00adni\u00adcal sup\u00adport: \u201cWe can always turn to HIGHVOLT for assis\u00adtance.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
