How can this task be tackled?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The Euro\u00adpean ener\u00adgy transition\u2014the com\u00adplete con\u00adver\u00adsion of our fos\u00adsil ener\u00adgy sys\u00adtem to one that is essen\u00adtial\u00adly based on renew\u00adable energies\u2014is one of the great\u00adest chal\u00adlenges of our time. This can only suc\u00adceed if we work togeth\u00ader deci\u00adsive\u00adly and across nation\u00adal bor\u00adders. To be able to meet ris\u00ading demand while becom\u00ading cli\u00admate neu\u00adtral, the EU mem\u00adber states must rapid\u00adly and com\u00adpre\u00adhen\u00adsive\u00adly expand renew\u00adable ener\u00adgies and trans\u00admis\u00adsion grids.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If we look at Cen\u00adtral Europe, wind and solar ener\u00adgy will be the main sources avail\u00adable to us in the future. Off\u00adshore wind ener\u00adgy will play a cen\u00adtral role here and the North Sea will devel\u00adop into a pow\u00ader\u00adhouse for north\u00adwest Europe. Com\u00adpa\u00adnies from the North Sea states of the Nether\u00adlands, Den\u00admark and Ger\u00admany there\u00adfore joined forces in 2017 and launched the North Sea Wind Pow\u00ader Hub as one of the Projects of Com\u00admon Inter\u00adest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group alignwide\"><div class=\"wp-block-group__inner-container is-layout-constrained wp-block-group-is-layout-constrained\">\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-style-large yellow-stripe is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cWe cur\u00adrent\u00adly oper\u00adate off\u00adshore grid con\u00adnec\u00adtion sys\u00adtems with a total capac\u00adi\u00adty of around 11.5 gigawatts (GW). By 2031, we will expand this capac\u00adi\u00adty to a good 40 GW.\u201c<\/p>\n<cite>Tim Mey\u00ader\u00adj\u00fcr\u00adgens, Chief Oper\u00adat\u00ading Offi\u00adcer at Ten\u00adneT<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>The focus of this project is on three ideas. First, the immense poten\u00adtial of the North Sea is to be tapped with cross-bor\u00adder con\u00adnec\u00adtions via an ener\u00adgy hub at sea. Sec\u00adond, the com\u00adbi\u00adna\u00adtion of wind farm con\u00adnec\u00adtion lines and inter\u00adcon\u00adnec\u00adtors will cre\u00adate a cost-effi\u00adcient and resilient transna\u00adtion\u00adal grid struc\u00adture that con\u00adnects dif\u00adfer\u00adent weath\u00ader sys\u00adtems and helps to sta\u00adbi\u00adlize the volatile sup\u00adply of renew\u00adable ener\u00adgies. And, third, the inte\u00adgra\u00adtion of dif\u00adfer\u00adent ener\u00adgy sec\u00adtors and ener\u00adgy sources cre\u00adates the best con\u00addi\u00adtions for the pro\u00adduc\u00adtion of hydro\u00adgen, thus sup\u00adport\u00ading the decar\u00adboniza\u00adtion of indus\u00adtry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As Europe\u2019s lead\u00ading off\u00adshore trans\u00admis\u00adsion sys\u00adtem oper\u00ada\u00adtor, Ten\u00adneT is already mas\u00adsive\u00adly dri\u00adving for\u00adward the expan\u00adsion and devel\u00adop\u00adment of new tech\u00adni\u00adcal stan\u00addards. We cur\u00adrent\u00adly oper\u00adate off\u00adshore grid con\u00adnec\u00adtion sys\u00adtems with a total capac\u00adi\u00adty of around 11.5 gigawatts (GW). By 2031, we will expand this capac\u00adi\u00adty to a good 40 GW and thus pro\u00advide a third of the Euro\u00adpean tar\u00adget of 120 GW for 2030.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How can the massive expansion of wind energy generation in the North Sea be accelerated?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>One answer to this is the North Sea Wind Pow\u00ader Hub. Instead of indi\u00advid\u00adual nation\u00adal point-to-point con\u00adnec\u00adtions, we are inves\u00adti\u00adgat\u00ading how the large wind poten\u00adtial in the North Sea can be joint\u00adly devel\u00adoped and dis\u00adtrib\u00aduted by the Euro\u00adpean coun\u00adtries. As a result, the coun\u00adtries involved will achieve a sig\u00adnif\u00adi\u00adcant accel\u00ader\u00ada\u00adtion in the expan\u00adsion of off\u00adshore wind ener\u00adgy as a basis for achiev\u00ading the tar\u00adget of cli\u00admate neu\u00adtral\u00adi\u00adty by 2045.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:10px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group alignwide\"><div class=\"wp-block-group__inner-container is-layout-constrained wp-block-group-is-layout-constrained\">\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-style-large yellow-stripe is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cOur new tech\u00adni\u00adcal 2 GW stan\u00addard will accel\u00ader\u00adate grid expan\u00adsion in the North Sea and fur\u00adther dri\u00adve the Euro\u00adpean ener\u00adgy tran\u00adsi\u00adtion.\u201c<\/p>\n<cite>Tim Mey\u00ader\u00adj\u00fcr\u00adgens, Chief Oper\u00adat\u00ading Offi\u00adcer at Ten\u00adneT<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:10px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>A sec\u00adond answer is our 2 GW program\u2014our new tech\u00adni\u00adcal stan\u00addard which will accel\u00ader\u00adate grid expan\u00adsion in the North Sea and fur\u00adther dri\u00adve the Euro\u00adpean ener\u00adgy tran\u00adsi\u00adtion. It will con\u00adserve resources and reduce envi\u00adron\u00admen\u00adtal impact\u2014with more than twice the pow\u00ader com\u00adpared to pre\u00advi\u00adous sys\u00adtems. It involves a stan\u00addard\u00adized 2 GW high-volt\u00adage direct cur\u00adrent (HVDC) trans\u00admis\u00adsion plat\u00adform con\u00adcept and a new 525 kV cable sys\u00adtem.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Both will increase the trans\u00admis\u00adsion capac\u00adi\u00adty while at the same time reduc\u00ading the impact on the envi\u00adron\u00adment. By 2031, Ten\u00adneT will build at least 14 of these 2 GW off\u00adshore grid con\u00adnec\u00adtion sys\u00adtems in the Ger\u00adman-Dutch North Sea. Togeth\u00ader, the projects will sup\u00adply up to 35 mil\u00adlion Euro\u00adpean house\u00adholds with green wind ener\u00adgy from the North Sea. The 2 GW stan\u00addard is tech\u00adni\u00adcal\u00adly the cen\u00adtral build\u00ading block for a mod\u00adu\u00adlar North Sea Wind\u00adpow\u00ader Hub con\u00adcept.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What concepts is TenneT pursuing in the North Sea?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>We are pur\u00adsu\u00ading the con\u00adcept of a meshed direct cur\u00adrent grid at sea and on land. In order to tap into the immense poten\u00adtial in the North Sea, wind farms need to be net\u00adworked across nation\u00adal bor\u00adders with dis\u00adtri\u00adb\u00adu\u00adtion hubs and high-per\u00adfor\u00admance grid infra\u00adstruc\u00adture. We are cur\u00adrent\u00adly work\u00ading on net\u00adwork\u00ading off\u00adshore grid con\u00adnec\u00adtion sys\u00adtems on the high seas so that pow\u00ader can be bun\u00addled and dis\u00adtrib\u00aduted inter\u00adna\u00adtion\u00adal\u00adly in a sen\u00adsi\u00adble way. In Ger\u00admany, for exam\u00adple, the grid con\u00adnec\u00adtion points on land are suit\u00adable loca\u00adtions for direct\u00adly sup\u00adply\u00ading impor\u00adtant indus\u00adtries with green ener\u00adgy. In terms of sec\u00adtor cou\u00adpling, this cre\u00adates the best con\u00addi\u00adtions for the pro\u00adduc\u00adtion and inte\u00adgra\u00adtion of hydro\u00adgen to decar\u00adbonize indus\u00adtry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Anoth\u00ader new fea\u00adture is that direct cur\u00adrent lines on land are being designed as a meshed sys\u00adtem: At select\u00aded grid con\u00adnec\u00adtion points on land, the direct cur\u00adrent lines from the sea are to be direct\u00adly net\u00adworked with the fur\u00adther trans\u00admit\u00adting direct cur\u00adrent lines on land in so-called mul\u00adti-ter\u00admi\u00adnal hubs. This will make the sys\u00adtem even more robust, pow\u00ader\u00adful, and cost-effi\u00adcient and will also sig\u00adnif\u00adi\u00adcant\u00adly min\u00adi\u00admize land con\u00adsump\u00adtion and envi\u00adron\u00admen\u00adtal impact which are impor\u00adtant fac\u00adtors for accep\u00adtance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">In your opinion, are artificial energy islands as a distribution hub for offshore wind energy a solution?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Plan\u00adning for off\u00adshore wind farm net\u00adworks is still at an ear\u00adly stage and depends heav\u00adi\u00adly on local con\u00addi\u00adtions, par\u00adtic\u00adu\u00adlar\u00adly the depth of the water. In prin\u00adci\u00adple, very dif\u00adfer\u00adent mod\u00adels can be used\u2014various types of plat\u00adform struc\u00adtures or even islands.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Much more impor\u00adtant in the dis\u00adcus\u00adsion is the nec\u00ades\u00adsary tech\u00adni\u00adcal stan\u00addard\u00adiza\u00adtion of con\u00advert\u00ader plat\u00adforms and off\u00adshore con\u00adnec\u00adtion sys\u00adtems. Only with a cross-provider and cross-oper\u00ada\u00adtor tech\u00adni\u00adcal stan\u00addard can net\u00adwork\u00ading be real\u00adized, and the sys\u00adtem become flex\u00adi\u00adble and effi\u00adcient.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What significance will the production of green hydrogen have in the context of wind power expansion?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Mol\u00ade\u00adcules are an indis\u00adpens\u00adable build\u00ading block for the ener\u00adgy tran\u00adsi\u00adtion and in the long term, togeth\u00ader with elec\u00adtric\u00adi\u00adty, they form the ener\u00adgy basis for our indus\u00adtry. In short: we can\u2019t do with\u00adout mol\u00ade\u00adcules. We will con\u00adtin\u00adue to import most of our hydro\u00adgen from oth\u00ader parts of the world in the future but elec\u00adtrol\u00ady\u00adsis in the Ger\u00adman North Sea is cur\u00adrent\u00adly being inten\u00adsive\u00adly inves\u00adti\u00adgat\u00aded.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As a trans\u00admis\u00adsion sys\u00adtem oper\u00ada\u00adtor, the impor\u00adtant fac\u00adtor for us in the end is that electrolyzers\u2014including those in the North Sea\u2014must be locat\u00aded in a way that serves the grid and there\u00adfore does not gen\u00ader\u00adate any fur\u00adther grid bot\u00adtle\u00adnecks. This means that wher\u00adev\u00ader we need ener\u00adgy in the form of elec\u00adtric\u00adi\u00adty, it is more effi\u00adcient not to take the detour via hydro\u00adgen, but to trans\u00adport the elec\u00adtric\u00adi\u00adty from the place of gen\u00ader\u00ada\u00adtion to the con\u00adsumers via lines. This is because a lot of ener\u00adgy is lost dur\u00ading the dou\u00adble con\u00adver\u00adsion of elec\u00adtric\u00adi\u00adty to hydro\u00adgen and back again. How\u00adev\u00ader, we need green hydro\u00adgen in many areas, for exam\u00adple to decar\u00adbonize indus\u00adtry or for gas-fired pow\u00ader plants.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In a sys\u00adtem based on volatile ener\u00adgy sources such as solar and wind, we urgent\u00adly need addi\u00adtion\u00adal secured elec\u00adtric\u00adi\u00adty output\u2014i.e. a reli\u00adable backup\u2014and hydro\u00adgen-capa\u00adble gas-fired pow\u00ader plants will play a cen\u00adtral role in this regard. This is also envis\u00adaged in the Ger\u00adman government\u2019s pow\u00ader plant strat\u00ade\u00adgy with its real\u00adiza\u00adtion that gas-fired pow\u00ader plants must be able to step in flex\u00adi\u00adbly if renew\u00adables tem\u00adporar\u00adi\u00adly do not sup\u00adply enough elec\u00adtric\u00adi\u00adty. This is why hydro\u00adgen is of out\u00adstand\u00ading impor\u00adtance for our future ener\u00adgy sup\u00adply and sys\u00adtem secu\u00adri\u00adty.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Which operating resources and services are becoming more important in the context of these major tasks?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Tack\u00adling the Euro\u00adpean ener\u00adgy tran\u00adsi\u00adtion from the North Sea is a promis\u00ading plan\u2014and an enor\u00admous chal\u00adlenge. More and more wind farms and off\u00adshore grid con\u00adnec\u00adtion sys\u00adtems need to be built in ever short\u00ader time\u00adframes. At the same time, frag\u00adile sup\u00adply chains and sharply ris\u00ading mate\u00adr\u00adi\u00adal costs on the glob\u00adal mar\u00adket, for exam\u00adple for raw mate\u00adri\u00adals, are mak\u00ading it increas\u00ading\u00adly dif\u00adfi\u00adcult to imple\u00adment this project in a time\u00adly and cost-effi\u00adcient man\u00adner.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With our inno\u00adv\u00ada\u00adtive 2 GW stan\u00addard, we have devel\u00adoped a con\u00adtrac\u00adtu\u00adal, admin\u00adis\u00adtra\u00adtive, and tech\u00adno\u00adlog\u00adi\u00adcal blue\u00adprint for future off\u00adshore grid con\u00adnec\u00adtion sys\u00adtems. We have thus cre\u00adat\u00aded a strong foun\u00adda\u00adtion for mak\u00ading green wind ener\u00adgy from the North Sea scal\u00adable and even more cost-effi\u00adcient in the future. The use of FIDIC stan\u00addard con\u00adtracts in our projects also con\u00adtributes to this since FIDIC is rec\u00adog\u00adnized world\u00adwide, is used through\u00adout the indus\u00adtry and facil\u00adi\u00adtates the imple\u00admen\u00adta\u00adtion of our 2 GW stan\u00addards.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group alignwide\"><div class=\"wp-block-group__inner-container is-layout-constrained wp-block-group-is-layout-constrained\">\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-style-large yellow-stripe is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cTack\u00adling the Euro\u00adpean ener\u00adgy tran\u00adsi\u00adtion from the North Sea is a promis\u00ading plan\u2014and an enor\u00admous chal\u00adlenge.\u201c<\/p>\n<cite>Tim Mey\u00ader\u00adj\u00fcr\u00adgens, Chief Oper\u00adat\u00ading Offi\u00adcer at Ten\u00adneT<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Nev\u00ader\u00adthe\u00adless, off\u00adshore expan\u00adsion rep\u00adre\u00adsents an enor\u00admous chal\u00adlenge. More and more sys\u00adtems need to be pro\u00adduced, installed and com\u00admis\u00adsioned in ever short\u00ader time peri\u00adods. This will only be pos\u00adsi\u00adble in a joint effort. We have there\u00adfore decid\u00aded to pub\u00adlish large-scale ten\u00adders for our HVDC systems\/platforms and the cable sys\u00adtems for a whole range of grid con\u00adnec\u00adtion sys\u00adtems instead of indi\u00advid\u00adual ten\u00adders in order to offer our sup\u00adply chain a reli\u00adable long-term per\u00adspec\u00adtive. With our new approach, we are bring\u00ading togeth\u00ader key mar\u00adket play\u00aders at an ear\u00adly stage, pool\u00ading exper\u00adtise, and cre\u00adat\u00ading syn\u00ader\u00adgies. In this way, we increase mar\u00adket capac\u00adi\u00adties in good time and pro\u00admote com\u00admit\u00adment and coop\u00ader\u00ada\u00adtion. Our part\u00adner\u00adship approach is a prime exam\u00adple of a long-term com\u00admit\u00adment to sus\u00adtain\u00adable and rapid grid expan\u00adsion in the North Sea.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The even stronger focus on part\u00adner\u00adship goes hand in hand with a fun\u00adda\u00admen\u00adtal change in val\u00adues. Sup\u00adpli\u00aders and cus\u00adtomers are becom\u00ading even clos\u00ader part\u00adners with shared goals, shared chal\u00adlenges, and shared respon\u00adsi\u00adbil\u00adi\u00adties. Only togeth\u00ader as a team will we be able to increase the pace of net\u00adwork expan\u00adsion and mas\u00adter this his\u00adtoric chal\u00adlenge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group
