All over the world, huge wind farms are grow\u00ading out of the water; in the North Sea alone, they already pro\u00adduce around 30 gigawatts of elec\u00adtric\u00adi\u00adty. But there are even far greater plans. In April 2023 in Ostend, Bel\u00adgium, gov\u00adern\u00adment rep\u00adre\u00adsen\u00adta\u00adtives from nine coun\u00adtries, includ\u00ading Den\u00admark, Ger\u00admany and the Nether\u00adlands, decid\u00aded that the North Sea should be devel\u00adoped into Europe\u2019s pow\u00ader plant: 300 gigawatts of envi\u00adron\u00admen\u00adtal\u00adly friend\u00adly elec\u00adtric\u00adi\u00adty for around 300 mil\u00adlion house\u00adholds are planned by 2050. To illus\u00adtrate the dimen\u00adsions: today there are about 1,000 wind tur\u00adbines in the North Sea, but ten times as many are need\u00aded to ful\u00adfill the ambi\u00adtious plan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It is thanks to peo\u00adple like Tor\u00adben Glar Nielsen that a gigan\u00adtic project like this is even pos\u00adsi\u00adble. He already had the idea of installing wind tur\u00adbines on the sea when hard\u00adly any\u00adone even thought of such a pos\u00adsi\u00adbil\u00adi\u00adty. \u201cWhen I once pre\u00adsent\u00aded the idea to the Euro\u00adpean Par\u00adlia\u00adment at the begin\u00adning of my career, I was still laughed at.\u201d In his home coun\u00adtry of Den\u00admark, wind pow\u00ader is now ubiq\u00adui\u00adtous, cov\u00ader\u00ading about 55 per\u00adcent of the country\u2019s elec\u00adtric\u00adi\u00adty needs from wind pow\u00ader alone. In the 45 years of his pro\u00adfes\u00adsion\u00adal life, Nielsen him\u00adself has set up many of the plants which make this pos\u00adsi\u00adble. Most recent\u00adly in his role as CTO at the Dan\u00adish trans\u00admis\u00adsion sys\u00adtem oper\u00ada\u00adtor Energinet, where he worked until 2021. Today, he sup\u00adports var\u00adi\u00adous com\u00adpa\u00adnies in renew\u00adable ener\u00adgy projects with his own con\u00adsult\u00ading com\u00adpa\u00adny. Nielsen says: \u201cI want to con\u00adtribute to the fact that we will soon be able to live in a CO2-neu\u00adtral way.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Artificial energy islands<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The project in the North Sea brings mankind a lit\u00adtle clos\u00ader to this goal. One of the cen\u00adtral ques\u00adtions, how\u00adev\u00ader, is how these enor\u00admous amounts of elec\u00adtric\u00adi\u00adty will reach con\u00adsumers on land in the future. Espe\u00adcial\u00adly since the plants have to move fur\u00adther and fur\u00adther out to sea, as there is not enough space near the coast. The vision: a net\u00adwork of arti\u00adfi\u00adcial islands that col\u00adlect the elec\u00adtric\u00adi\u00adty from sur\u00adround\u00ading wind farms as part of a transna\u00adtion\u00adal pow\u00ader grid, dis\u00adtrib\u00adute it fur\u00adther or con\u00advert it into hydro\u00adgen on site. The idea was born in 2017 at a meet\u00ading between the two trans\u00admis\u00adsion sys\u00adtem oper\u00ada\u00adtors Energinet and Ten\u00adneT to real\u00adize the COBRAcables\u2014a high-volt\u00adage direct cur\u00adrent trans\u00admis\u00adsion line between Den\u00admark and the Nether\u00adlands. Nielsen, then still CTO at Energinet, chat\u00adted with his man\u00adag\u00ading direc\u00adtor col\u00adleague at the time at Ten\u00adneT, Wil\u00adfried Breuer, dur\u00ading a break.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe cable also cross\u00ades wind tur\u00adbines on its way through the North Sea, and that\u2019s when we got the idea that ener\u00adgy islands might be a good solu\u00adtion to bet\u00adter con\u00adnect off\u00adshore wind pow\u00ader,\u201d Nielsen recalls. Breuer, who is now man\u00adag\u00ading direc\u00adtor of Maschi\u00adnen\u00adfab\u00adrik Rein\u00adhausen, says, \u201cThe North Sea is quite shal\u00adlow and there\u00adfore actu\u00adal\u00adly pre\u00addes\u00adtined for arti\u00adfi\u00adcial islands that could dis\u00adtrib\u00adute elec\u00adtric\u00adi\u00adty to sev\u00ader\u00adal coun\u00adtries at once.\u201d As crazy as the idea may sound, it\u2019s not at all. Pil\u00ading land on top of the sea is tech\u00adni\u00adcal\u00adly noth\u00ading new. The air\u00adports of Hong Kong and Osa\u00adka, for exam\u00adple, are built on arti\u00adfi\u00adcial islands. This form of land recla\u00adma\u00adtion also has a long tra\u00addi\u00adtion in the Nether\u00adlands: Huge areas were wrest\u00aded from the sea by build\u00ading dikes for agri\u00adcul\u00adture, but also for large parts of the port of Rot\u00adter\u00addam.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The idea nev\u00ader left the two engi\u00adneers. Only six months lat\u00ader and after sev\u00ader\u00adal dis\u00adcus\u00adsions with represen\u00adtatives from pol\u00adi\u00adtics and indus\u00adtry, they ini\u00adti\u00adat\u00aded the North Sea Wind Pow\u00ader Hub Pro\u00adgram (NSWPH). The con\u00adsor\u00adtium of Ten\u00adneT, Energinet, Gasunie and the Port of Rot\u00adter\u00addam is to pre\u00adpare tech\u00adni\u00adcal and eco\u00adnom\u00adic fea\u00adsi\u00adbil\u00adi\u00adty stud\u00adies to devel\u00adop the North Sea into Europe\u2019s ener\u00adgy hub.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The North Sea as a power plant<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Until now, off\u00adshore wind pow\u00ader has been col\u00adlect\u00aded on steel plat\u00adforms known as jack\u00adets, which are also used by the oil and gas indus\u00adtry for pro\u00adduc\u00adtion. They house the rec\u00adti\u00adfi\u00ader sta\u00adtions that con\u00advert the wind pow\u00ader into direct cur\u00adrent for onshore trans\u00adport. The prin\u00adci\u00adple is tried and test\u00aded, but it also has its dis\u00adad\u00advan\u00adtages: space is lim\u00adit\u00aded, main\u00adte\u00adnance work is not pos\u00adsi\u00adble at all times of the year, and the ser\u00advice life of the plat\u00adform is also lim\u00adit\u00aded in view of the harsh con\u00addi\u00adtions. An island would be more sus\u00adtain\u00adable here, and it would also offer much more space for build\u00ading the infra\u00adstruc\u00adture. The jack\u00adet solu\u00adtion cur\u00adrent\u00adly man\u00adages to han\u00addle a max\u00adi\u00admum of 2 gigawatts of pow\u00ader. With the ener\u00adgy islands, about 10 gigawatts would be pos\u00adsi\u00adble in a first expan\u00adsion stage and up to 30 gigawatts with each addi\u00adtion\u00adal island.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In addi\u00adtion, it opens up fur\u00adther poten\u00adtial uses that would not even be eco\u00adnom\u00adi\u00adcal\u00adly pos\u00adsi\u00adble on a plat\u00adform, explains Breuer: \u201cSome of the elec\u00adtric\u00adi\u00adty could be used direct\u00adly on site for the pro\u00adduc\u00adtion of hydro\u00adgen, which would then be brought ashore via pipelines.\u201d Elec\u00adtric\u00adi\u00adty has the dis\u00adad\u00advan\u00adtage that it has to be com\u00adplete\u00adly dis\u00adsi\u00adpat\u00aded every frac\u00adtion of a sec\u00adond. The gen\u00ader\u00ada\u00adtion peaks can there\u00adfore be used for hydro\u00adgen pro\u00adduc\u00adtion. This also offers the advan\u00adtage that the elec\u00adtric\u00adi\u00adty infra\u00adstruc\u00adture would not have to be designed for the peaks, but only for the con\u00adtin\u00adu\u00adous load, and thus about 30 per\u00adcent small\u00ader. Main\u00adte\u00adnance work is also eas\u00adi\u00ader because the island offers enough space to store spare parts and build accom\u00admo\u00adda\u00adtions for tech\u00adni\u00adcal per\u00adson\u00adnel. This means that repairs can be car\u00adried out quick\u00adly with\u00adout any\u00adone hav\u00ading to trav\u00adel out by heli\u00adcopter or ship.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A power grid at sea<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Think\u00ading a lit\u00adtle fur\u00adther, the ener\u00adgy islands could also become part of an inter\u00adna\u00adtion\u00adal pow\u00ader grid at sea, link\u00ading coun\u00adtries and off\u00adshore wind farms. Until now, wind farms have been con\u00adnect\u00aded radi\u00adal\u00adly, like a one-way street, to the inter\u00adcon\u00adnect\u00aded grid of the coun\u00adtry in whose ter\u00adri\u00adto\u00adr\u00adi\u00adal waters they are locat\u00aded. In order to exchange the elec\u00adtric\u00adi\u00adty between dif\u00adfer\u00adent coun\u00adtries, the oper\u00ada\u00adtors then lay new sub\u00adma\u00adrine cables, some of which run right past the wind farms from which the elec\u00adtric\u00adi\u00adty orig\u00adi\u00adnal\u00adly came. Incon\u00adve\u00adnient, actu\u00adal\u00adly. \u201cThe ener\u00adgy islands could col\u00adlect the pow\u00ader from sev\u00ader\u00adal off\u00adshore wind farms and distri\u00adbute it via sub\u00adma\u00adrine cables to sev\u00ader\u00adal neigh\u00adbor\u00ading states at once,\u201d Nielsen says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The hub-and-spoke concept<\/h4>\n\n\n\n
\n\n\n\n

Up to now, wind farms have been con\u00adnect\u00aded radi\u00adal\u00adly to the main\u00adland. But if off\u00adshore wind farms are to be locat\u00aded fur\u00adther and fur\u00adther away from the coast in the future, new con\u00adcepts are need\u00aded. The North Sea Wind Pow\u00ader Hub (NSWPH) con\u00adsor\u00adtium is there\u00adfore work\u00ading on a new approach to con\u00adnect\u00ading off\u00adshore wind farms, known as the hub-and-spoke con\u00adcept, in which the elec\u00adtric\u00adi\u00adty gen\u00ader\u00adat\u00aded from sev\u00ader\u00adal wind farms is col\u00adlect\u00aded on arti\u00adfi\u00adcial islands, for exam\u00adple, and dis\u00adtrib\u00aduted to coun\u00adtries around the North Sea.<\/p>\n\n\n

With this so-called hub-and-spoke con\u00adcept (see box) and by inter\u00adcon\u00adnect\u00ading the ener\u00adgy islands with each oth\u00ader, sig\u00adnif\u00adi\u00adcant\u00adly more elec\u00adtric\u00adi\u00adty from renew\u00adables can be inte\u00adgrat\u00aded into the pan-Euro\u00adpean sys\u00adtem. In this way, Nor\u00adway with its large hydropow\u00ader reserves which are avail\u00adable regard\u00adless of wind, could also be includ\u00aded. \u201cOf course, the tech\u00adni\u00adcal pre\u00adreq\u00adui\u00adsites for this still have to be cre\u00adat\u00aded in order to link the var\u00adi\u00adous DC sys\u00adtems, but stud\u00adies are already under\u00adway for this as well,\u201d says Breuer. In the future, much more sta\u00adble renew\u00adable ener\u00adgy gen\u00ader\u00ada\u00adtion will then be pos\u00adsi\u00adble, and exchanges between inter\u00adna\u00adtion\u00adal elec\u00adtric\u00adi\u00adty mar\u00adkets will also be much eas\u00adi\u00ader.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When will the vision come true?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

At the moment, there is advanced plan\u00adning for two islands. The Bel\u00adgian trans\u00admis\u00adsion sys\u00adtem oper\u00ada\u00adtor Elia is already plan\u00adning to build Princess Elis\u00ada\u00adbet Island in 2024, and anoth\u00ader is being con\u00adsid\u00adered off Thors\u00adminde in Den\u00admark. How\u00adev\u00ader, the arti\u00adfi\u00adcial ener\u00adgy islands are not cheap. For the Dan\u00adish project, plan\u00adners cal\u00adcu\u00adlate costs of 28 bil\u00adlion euros, five per\u00adcent of which is for build\u00ading the island. \u201cUp to a capac\u00adi\u00adty of 2 gigawatts, con\u00adven\u00adtion\u00adal jack\u00adets are cer\u00adtain\u00adly the cheap\u00ader solu\u00adtion. But at the pow\u00ader lev\u00adels envis\u00adaged, our ener\u00adgy islands have an advan\u00adtage,\u201d says Nielsen. Breuer is also con\u00advinced that the more eco\u00adnom\u00adi\u00adcal solu\u00adtion is bundling via islands. \u201cEvery\u00adthing close to the coast is done fur\u00adther radi\u00adal\u00adly, which affects about 100 gigawatts, but for the oth\u00ader 200 gigawatts, ener\u00adgy islands are the bet\u00adter option.\u201d Depend\u00ading on the con\u00adcept, a total of about eight ener\u00adgy islands would be nec\u00ades\u00adsary for the plans in the North Sea. The Dog\u00adger Bank, a huge sand\u00adbank about 300 to 350 kilo\u00adme\u00adters long and up to 120 kilo\u00adme\u00adters wide that lies under the sea, is suit\u00adable for addi\u00adtion\u00adal islands. \u201cIt is also geo\u00adgraph\u00adi\u00adcal\u00adly very con\u00adve\u00adnient because the British, Euro\u00adpean and Scan\u00addi\u00adna\u00advian coasts are about the same dis\u00adtance away,\u201d adds Nielsen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Now it is the politi\u00adcians\u2019 turn to cre\u00adate the frame\u00adwork con\u00addi\u00adtions so that the plans can also be turned into real\u00adi\u00adty. \u201cAs the Rein\u00adhausen Group, we offer the tech\u00adnol\u00ado\u00adgy and ser\u00advices to ensure that the grid at sea func\u00adtions just as reli\u00adably as it does on land. We also already have many years of expe\u00adri\u00adence with mar\u00aditime solu\u00adtions,\u201d Breuer empha\u00adsizes.  Nielsen is also already think\u00ading beyond the North Sea. Because the mod\u00adel could also be a blue\u00adprint for oth\u00ader regions of the world: \u201cIn Asia, wind pow\u00ader expan\u00adsion is still in its infan\u00adcy; there, too, there are ambi\u00adtious cli\u00admate tar\u00adgets.\u201d With his con\u00adsult\u00ading com\u00adpa\u00adny, he wants to help make that hap\u00adpen.\u2002<\/p>\n\n\n\n
