As it looks, this island will be the world\u2019s first arti\u00adfi\u00adcial ener\u00adgy island. The Bel\u00adgian trans\u00admis\u00adsion sys\u00adtem oper\u00ada\u00adtor Elia wants to build it 45 kilo\u00adme\u00adters off the coast of Bel\u00adgium. Con\u00adstruc\u00adtion is sched\u00aduled to start as ear\u00adly as 2024. When the project is com\u00adplet\u00aded in 2030, 3.5 gigawatts of elec\u00adtric\u00adi\u00adty will be pro\u00adduced in the region around the island on an area of around 285 square kilo\u00adme\u00adters. This will flow via sub\u00adma\u00adrine cable to the Bel\u00adgian main\u00adland but also to the ener\u00adgy island off Thors\u00adminde and to the Unit\u00aded King\u00addom. The island is designed in such a way that it can be expand\u00aded in a mod\u00adu\u00adlar fash\u00adion at a lat\u00ader date.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

2<\/em> Islands on the Dogger Bank
<\/h5>\n\n\n\n

The Dog\u00adger Bank is a sand\u00adbank lying under the sea about 300 to 350 kilo\u00adme\u00adters long and up to 120 kilo\u00adme\u00adters wide, which was a land bridge between Great Britain and Den\u00admark dur\u00ading the last ice age. It is only 13 meters deep in places and there\u00adfore ide\u00adal\u00adly suit\u00aded for off\u00adshore wind farms with a total capac\u00adi\u00adty of 100 gigawatts. The tur\u00adbines are expect\u00aded to start oper\u00adat\u00ading from the ear\u00adly 2030s. One or more islands could be raised on the Dog\u00adger Bank and col\u00adlect the elec\u00adtric\u00adi\u00adty, which would then be rout\u00aded to the UK, Nor\u00adway and Bel\u00adgium. So far, how\u00adev\u00ader, the plans exist only on paper.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Den\u00admark is plan\u00adning a twelve hectare ener\u00adgy island 80 kilo\u00adme\u00adters off the North Sea coast of Thors\u00adminde. It could sup\u00adply three gigawatts of elec\u00adtric\u00adi\u00adty after the first stage of expan\u00adsion, lat\u00ader it is planned to sup\u00adply ten gigawatts, which will then be pro\u00advid\u00aded by a total of sev\u00aden sur\u00adround\u00ading wind farms with around 470 wind tur\u00adbines. Elec\u00adtrol\u00ady\u00adsis plants for hydro\u00adgen pro\u00adduc\u00adtion are also planned. The clean wind pow\u00ader is intend\u00aded for Den\u00admark, Bel\u00adgium and Ger\u00admany. Orig\u00adi\u00adnal\u00adly, the island was to be con\u00adnect\u00aded to the grid from 2033, but plans are cur\u00adrent\u00adly on hold until investors are found for the project.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Although this project is not an arti\u00adfi\u00adcial island, the vaca\u00adtion island of Born\u00adholm in the Baltic Sea is also to serve as an ener\u00adgy hub with a con\u00advert\u00ader, trans\u00adformer sta\u00adtion and a ter\u00admi\u00adnal for dis\u00adtrib\u00adut\u00ading the wind pow\u00ader pro\u00adduced by off\u00adshore tur\u00adbines about 15 kilo\u00adme\u00adters south\u00adwest of the coast start\u00ading around 2030. At least three gigawatts of capac\u00adi\u00adty are expect\u00aded to be installed. A cable will deliv\u00ader the pow\u00ader across Zealand (Den\u00admark) and on to Ger\u00admany.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n
