So when more and more peo\u00adple decid\u00aded to turn their own roof into a pow\u00ader plant, all eyes sud\u00adden\u00adly turned to the low-volt\u00adage grids, because with the many decen\u00adtral\u00adized feed\u00aders, it became increas\u00ading\u00adly dif\u00adfi\u00adcult to main\u00adtain the volt\u00adage band. The pow\u00ader con\u00adsump\u00adtion could have been improved, for exam\u00adple, by lay\u00ading new and thick\u00ader cables and build\u00ading addi\u00adtion\u00adal trans\u00adformer sta\u00adtions in the local grid. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>How\u00adev\u00ader, this is not only an expen\u00adsive process, but also a lengthy one due to the many approval pro\u00adce\u00addures. Experts there\u00adfore came up with a dif\u00adfer\u00adent idea: Why not make the local grid trans\u00adform\u00aders con\u00adtrol\u00adlable and in that way increase the grid\u2019s capac\u00adi\u00adty? What didn\u2019t exist at the time, how\u00adev\u00ader, were suit\u00adable on-load tap-chang\u00aders that could be used sen\u00adsi\u00adbly to reg\u00adu\u00adlate the volt\u00adage of such trans\u00adform\u00aders. The per\u00adfect task for MR, the inven\u00adtor of the first on-load tap-chang\u00ader based on the resis\u00adtance prin\u00adci\u00adple! Fran\u00adco Piz\u00adzut\u00adto, Busi\u00adness Devel\u00adop\u00adment Man\u00adag\u00ader, remem\u00adbers: \u201cIn the first pilot projects, we exper\u00adi\u00adment\u00aded with con\u00adven\u00adtion\u00adal on-load tap-chang\u00aders in order to gain expe\u00adri\u00adence\u201d (<a href=\"https:\/\/onload.reinhausen.com\/en\/wp-admin\/post.php?post=12013&amp;action=edit\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">see also the inter\u00adview with Fran\u00adco Piz\u00adzut\u00adto<\/a>). <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We real\u00adized, how\u00adev\u00ader, that this could not be a per\u00adma\u00adnent solu\u00adtion, because if a volt\u00adage reg\u00adu\u00adlat\u00ading dis\u00adtri\u00adb\u00adu\u00adtion trans\u00adformer (VRDT) was to be used on a large scale, it had to be afford\u00adable and could not exceed the foot\u00adprint of a con\u00adven\u00adtion\u00adal dis\u00adtri\u00adb\u00adu\u00adtion trans\u00adformer. In 2012, the GRIDCON\u00ae iTAP\u00ae was the first tap-chang\u00ader for dis\u00adtri\u00adb\u00adu\u00adtion trans\u00adform\u00aders to be launched on the mar\u00adket, and in 2016, the ECOTAP\u00ae VPD\u00ae marked a deci\u00adsive mile\u00adstone: It was the world\u2019s small\u00adest on-load tap-chang\u00ader to date and took the VRDT to a new lev\u00adel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group\"><div class=\"wp-block-group__inner-container is-layout-constrained wp-block-group-is-layout-constrained\">\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-center with-counter long-number has-buttons-background-color has-text-color has-link-color has-normal-font-size wp-elements-037c8ff6cebdb553f08dcba41325f080\" style=\"font-style:normal;font-weight:800\"><span class=\"mgznkr-counter m4w-counter  \" data-mode=\"en\" data-delay=\"120\" data-time=\"1500\" data-val=\"10,000\">0<\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-center less-margin\">ECOTAP\u2009\u00ae VPD\u2009\u00ae<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\">have already been deliv\u00adered to cus\u00adtomers<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Today, around 15 years after the first solar boom,the  the ten thou\u00adsandth ECOTAP\u00ae VPD\u00ae has already been installed in VRDTs around the world. While the main focus of use has so far been Cen\u00adtral Europe, more and more coun\u00adtries around the world are also dis\u00adcov\u00ader\u00ading the VRDT for them\u00adselves. Such as in the USA, for exam\u00adple, where MR has devel\u00adoped the ECOTAP\u00ae VPD\u00ae I, a solu\u00adtion that also makes pos\u00adsi\u00adble the reg\u00adu\u00adla\u00adtion of sin\u00adgle-phase grids (<a href=\"https:\/\/onload.reinhausen.com\/en\/wp-admin\/post.php?post=12045&amp;action=edit\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">see arti\u00adcle about Sin\u00adgle-phase volt\u00adage reg\u00adu\u00adlat\u00ading dis\u00adtri\u00adb\u00adu\u00adtion trans\u00adform\u00aders in the USA<\/a>). How\u00adev\u00ader, even if the VRDT can now be seen as a stan\u00addard oper\u00adat\u00ading device, there are still reser\u00adva\u00adtions. Ava\u00adcon is one of the largest region\u00adal dis\u00adtri\u00adb\u00adu\u00adtion grid oper\u00ada\u00adtors in Ger\u00admany with a grid area that stretch\u00ades from the North Sea coast to south\u00adern Hesse and sup\u00adplies almost two and a half mil\u00adlion peo\u00adple with elec\u00adtric\u00adi\u00adty. Ava\u00adcon played a key role in the devel\u00adop\u00adment of the VRDT and par\u00adtic\u00adi\u00adpat\u00aded in pilot stud\u00adies from the very begin\u00adning. \u201cEssen\u00adtial\u00adly, we use VRDTs to decou\u00adple the low and medi\u00adum volt\u00adages and also to sig\u00adnif\u00adi\u00adcant\u00adly reduce cable net\u00adwork expan\u00adsion,\u201d says Ren\u00adner. Over 90,000 decen\u00adtral\u00adized gen\u00ader\u00ada\u00adtion plants with a total out\u00adput of almost 14 gigawatts are already con\u00adnect\u00aded today. And this fig\u00adure is set to rise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In addi\u00adtion, the elec\u00adtri\u00adfi\u00adca\u00adtion of the heat\u00ading and trans\u00adport sec\u00adtors is adding more and more new con\u00adsumers. \u201cIf we have to expand the grid on a large scale, then the res\u00adi\u00addents in a set\u00adtle\u00adment should notice as lit\u00adtle as pos\u00adsi\u00adble. So we can\u2019t just dig up every street and build pow\u00ader lines,\u201d empha\u00adsizes Ren\u00adner. Espe\u00adcial\u00adly as there is a lack of man\u00adpow\u00ader to car\u00adry out this amount of work. She there\u00adfore prefers a point\u00aded mea\u00adsure such as the VRDT as a quick and effi\u00adcient alter\u00adna\u00adtive. But they were gen\u00ader\u00adal\u00adly pos\u00adi\u00adtive: \u201cThe fact that it doesn\u2019t involve a lot of work meant that there was a high lev\u00adel of accep\u00adtance straight away. The VRDT was con\u00advinc\u00ading.\u201d EAM Netz GmbH sup\u00adplies around 1.4 mil\u00adlion peo\u00adple in Hesse and the neigh\u00adbor\u00ading fed\u00ader\u00adal states with elec\u00adtric\u00adi\u00adty and 43,500 decen\u00adtral\u00adized gen\u00ader\u00ada\u00adtion plants are cur\u00adrent\u00adly con\u00adnect\u00aded in the grid area. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>EAM first used a VRDT in 2009, pri\u00admar\u00adi\u00adly because of the PV sys\u00adtems at the low volt\u00adage lev\u00adel, but the com\u00adpa\u00adny now also uses them exten\u00adsive\u00adly at medi\u00adum volt\u00adage. Reit\u00ading is extreme\u00adly sat\u00adis\u00adfied with the equip\u00adment: \u201cIt\u2019s a stan\u00addard prod\u00aduct which is absolute\u00adly reli\u00adable and can be com\u00adpared with a con\u00adven\u00adtion\u00adal trans\u00adformer.\u201d The grid oper\u00ada\u00adtor now pro\u00adcures around a third of its new trans\u00adform\u00aders as VRDTs and Reit\u00ading assumes that this share will increase. Nev\u00ader\u00adthe\u00adless, Michael Pink, respon\u00adsi\u00adble for grid plan\u00adning, also sees the VRDT as a stan\u00addard tool for grid devel\u00adop\u00adment. While the com\u00adpa\u00adny gained its first expe\u00adri\u00adence in 2012, the need for fur\u00adther use of reg\u00adu\u00adlat\u00aded local sub\u00adsta\u00adtions was not yet giv\u00aden at that time, so it remained a pilot project. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This changed at the end of 2020 as more and more of the 235,100 cus\u00adtomers sup\u00adplied with elec\u00adtric\u00adi\u00adty by K\u00e4rn\u00adten Netz decid\u00aded to install solar sys\u00adtems, with the main impe\u00adtus being pro\u00advid\u00aded by the Renew\u00adable Ener\u00adgy Expan\u00adsion Act (EAG), which the Aus\u00adtri\u00adan gov\u00adern\u00adment passed to increase the share of renew\u00adable ener\u00adgy in elec\u00adtric\u00adi\u00adty pro\u00adduc\u00adtion to 100 per\u00adcent by 2030. This act stip\u00adu\u00adlates that every cus\u00adtomer has the right to feed into the grid and that grid oper\u00ada\u00adtors were oblig\u00aded to expand the grid with\u00adin one year. \u201cSo we made a fresh start,\u201d says Pink. How\u00adev\u00ader, the VRDT is not the best solu\u00adtion every\u00adwhere in K\u00e4rnten\u2019s sup\u00adply area: \u201cWe have very wide grid spurs where the volt\u00adage qual\u00adi\u00adty and short-cir\u00adcuit pow\u00ader are very low,\u201d says Pink. S\u00e4ch\u00adsisch-Bay\u00aderische Stark\u00adstrom-Ger\u00e4te\u00adbau GmbH (SBG) is a lead\u00ading man\u00adu\u00adfac\u00adtur\u00ader of dis\u00adtri\u00adb\u00adu\u00adtion trans\u00adform\u00aders and has been a VRDT man\u00adu\u00adfac\u00adtur\u00ader from the very begin\u00adning, con\u00adtribut\u00ading its expe\u00adri\u00adence and exper\u00adtise to the devel\u00adop\u00adment right from the start.
