Regens\u00adburg, a bright and sun\u00adny Mon\u00adday in April. Ser\u00advice tech\u00adni\u00adcians Christoph Friedl and Andreas Sin\u00adger\u00ader meet up at MR to load up their vehi\u00adcle because they have anoth\u00ader assign\u00adment. This time they are trav\u00adel\u00ading to the Czech Repub\u00adlic to ser\u00advice the three on-load tap-chang\u00aders of a phase-shifter trans\u00adformer (PST). They have been com\u00admis\u00adsioned by \u010cEPS, the Czech Republic\u2019s only trans\u00admis\u00adsion sys\u00adtem oper\u00ada\u00adtor and there\u00adfore respon\u00adsi\u00adble for keep\u00ading the lights on in the coun\u00adtry. The van trav\u00adels from Bavaria to the Czech hills. Their des\u00adti\u00adna\u00adtion is in the north\u00adwest of the coun\u00adtry, where the riv\u00ader Eger flows into the Nechran\u00adice reser\u00advoir. This is where the Czech Republic\u2019s largest trans\u00adformer sta\u00adtion, Hradec, is locat\u00aded.<\/p>\n\n\n\n


It draws its elec\u00adtric\u00adi\u00adty from the Prun\u00e9\u0159ov and Tu\u0161im\u00adice pow\u00ader plants and is con\u00adnect\u00aded to Ger\u00admany across the bor\u00adder. It has had four PSTs since 2017. \u201cSince they were installed, we have also had a direct ser\u00advice con\u00adtract with MR,\u201d explains Jan L\u00e1la, Head of the Trans\u00adformer Depart\u00adment and Head of Main\u00adte\u00adnance Region West (more on this in the inter\u00adview<\/a>).\u2003\u2003\u2003\u2003\u2003\u2003\u2003\u2003<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The gateway to the country<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The Czech ener\u00adgy grid is large\u00adly tran\u00adsit-based. A large pro\u00adpor\u00adtion of the ener\u00adgy which is import\u00aded and lat\u00ader export\u00aded comes from Ger\u00admany. A sig\u00adnif\u00adi\u00adcant pro\u00adpor\u00adtion of this ener\u00adgy enters the coun\u00adtry via the Hradec sub\u00adsta\u00adtion near Kada\u0148. It is one of the largest and most impor\u00adtant sub\u00adsta\u00adtions in the Czech Repub\u00adlic and its oper\u00ada\u00adtor \u010cEPS is the only trans\u00admis\u00adsion sys\u00adtem oper\u00ada\u00adtor in the coun\u00adtry. PSTs are extreme\u00adly impor\u00adtant here because the Czech trans\u00admis\u00adsion grid has to cope with large and often fluc\u00adtu\u00adat\u00ading ener\u00adgy inflows from Ger\u00admany, par\u00adtic\u00adu\u00adlar\u00adly due to \u010cEPS\u2019 cross-bor\u00adder ener\u00adgy flows. These can be sig\u00adnif\u00adi\u00adcant, espe\u00adcial\u00adly dur\u00ading times of high wind-ener\u00adgy pro\u00adduc\u00adtion in the neigh\u00adbor\u00ading coun\u00adtry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

PSTs com\u00adpen\u00adsate for volt\u00adage fluc\u00adtu\u00ada\u00adtions by shift\u00ading the over\u00adload in such a way that the grid as a whole is bet\u00adter uti\u00adlized, which leads to a high\u00ader trans\u00admis\u00adsion capac\u00adi\u00adty in the extra-high volt\u00adage grid. This also makes expen\u00adsive redis\u00adpatch mea\u00adsures unnec\u00ades\u00adsary. Each of the four PST units at \u010cEPS has an out\u00adput of 850 MVA and can reg\u00adu\u00adlate a phase angle of \u00b1 30 degrees. The Hradec PSTs there\u00adfore act as a buffer for Ger\u00adman wind pow\u00ader with fluc\u00adtu\u00adat\u00ading out\u00adput, which has to pass through these trans\u00adform\u00aders \u2013 and there\u00adfore also through MR\u2019s on-load tap-chang\u00aders.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In use for all cases<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

When Christoph and Andreas arrive, they are wel\u00adcomed to the site by Jan L\u00e1la. While Christoph was here last year to ser\u00advice the tap-chang\u00aders of the oth\u00ader three phase shifters, for Andreas it is his first time work\u00ading on the house-sized trans\u00adform\u00aders. Safe\u00adty is every\u00adthing, which is why every\u00adthing is done exact\u00adly accord\u00ading to pro\u00adto\u00adcol at the han\u00addover.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The trans\u00adformer has already been secured and is no longer live and can there\u00adfore safe\u00adly be hand\u00aded over to Christoph and Andreas who start by drain\u00ading the insu\u00adlat\u00ading oil. Only now is it time for the \u010cEPS employ\u00adees to lift the three tap-chang\u00aders, black\u00adened by oil, out of the trans\u00adformer one by one using a crane. This prepa\u00adra\u00adtion alone takes two hours. Every\u00adthing is now per\u00adfect\u00adly pre\u00adpared. Christoph and Andreas take the tap-chang\u00aders to the sub\u00adsta\u00adtion work\u00adshop and get to work. They could be faced with any\u00adthing from sim\u00adple clean\u00ading to com\u00adplex repairs. \u201cBut they prob\u00ada\u00adbly won\u2019t miss any\u00adthing. This is stan\u00addard main\u00adte\u00adnance \u2013 you could say \u2018care\u2019 \u2013 so that there are no unsched\u00aduled shut\u00addowns in the future.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Andreas and Christoph are two of 300 ser\u00advice tech\u00adni\u00adcians who work for MR world\u00adwide (around 55 of whom dri\u00adve or fly from Ger\u00admany). As Head of Glob\u00adal Exe\u00adcu\u00adtion & Prod\u00aduct Ser\u00advices, Uwe Selt\u00adsam is respon\u00adsi\u00adble, among oth\u00ader things, for ensur\u00ading that their train\u00ading is suc\u00adcess\u00adful and that the ser\u00advice work is car\u00adried out to the high\u00adest qual\u00adi\u00adty. \u201cOur ser\u00advice assign\u00adments can basi\u00adcal\u00adly be divid\u00aded into two areas. First\u00adly, those that involve unplanned and very time-crit\u00adi\u00adcal cas\u00ades that require quick action. Here, our spe\u00adcial\u00adists set off imme\u00addi\u00adate\u00adly and are usu\u00adal\u00adly at the customer\u2019s premis\u00ades with\u00adin 24 hours. The prob\u00adlem is often so seri\u00adous that the trans\u00adformer is already dam\u00adaged.\u201d And if this stops pro\u00adduc\u00adtion, it costs a lot of mon\u00adey with every hour that pass\u00ades.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The more fre\u00adquent jobs, how\u00adev\u00ader, are \u201crou\u00adtine main\u00adte\u00adnance\u201d such as in Hradec. \u201cThe on-load tap-chang\u00ader is very robust. If it is main\u00adtained as we rec\u00adom\u00admend, it can the\u00ado\u00adret\u00adi\u00adcal\u00adly even out\u00adlive its trans\u00adformer.\u201d This requires a high lev\u00adel of sys\u00adtem knowl\u00adedge and expe\u00adri\u00adence. \u201cIf main\u00adte\u00adnance is delayed or checked by work\u00aders on site who don\u2019t know the full scope of ser\u00advice, then the sys\u00adtem could of course fail com\u00adplete\u00adly at some point.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Measure, clean, test<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

In the work\u00adshop, the ser\u00advice tech\u00adni\u00adcians go through all the nec\u00ades\u00adsary steps in a prac\u00adticed man\u00adner. Christoph knows the tap-chang\u00aders like the back of his hand: \u201cOur prod\u00aducts are designed for max\u00adi\u00admum effi\u00adcien\u00adcy. There are no extra screws and every lit\u00adtle com\u00adpo\u00adnent has its own spe\u00adcif\u00adic func\u00adtion. If I don\u2019t know these, I can\u2019t take good care of the tap-chang\u00ader.\u201d After clean\u00ading the out\u00adside, he and Andreas first mea\u00adsure cer\u00adtain val\u00adues such as the resis\u00adtances, ener\u00adgy stor\u00adage, con\u00adtact wear, con\u00adtact bridge clear\u00adance or main con\u00adtact con\u00adnec\u00adtion. They then com\u00adplete\u00adly dis\u00adman\u00adtle the tap-chang\u00aders and clean all com\u00adpo\u00adnents to remove oil and soot. The inspec\u00adtion also includes the tech\u00adni\u00adcians\u2019 scru\u00adti\u00adniz\u00ading eye, explains Andreas: \u201cThe visu\u00adal inspec\u00adtion may sound sim\u00adple, but it is pre\u00adcise\u00adly our expert eye that detects abnor\u00admal\u00adi\u00adties or where small wear\u00ading parts need to be replaced \u2013 such as con\u00adtact wear, gaps, the con\u00adtact spring and so on.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAlthough we always car\u00adry out sim\u00adi\u00adlar work, no two jobs are the same. It remains excit\u00ading.\u201d<\/p>\nChristoph Friedl, Ser\u00advice Tech\u00adni\u00adcian<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Jan L\u00e1la also pops in from time to time to let the pro\u00adfes\u00adsion\u00adals show him the inner work\u00adings of his tap-chang\u00aders \u2013 a rare sight. The work\u00adshop in Hradec is as well equipped as a trans\u00adformer fac\u00adto\u00adry and even has a large oil pan in which the 100 kilo\u00adgram divert\u00ader switch inserts can drip dry. \u201cIt sim\u00adply makes the work eas\u00adi\u00ader. You have to be par\u00adtic\u00adu\u00adlar\u00adly care\u00adful with these phase shifters: High cur\u00adrents pass through their tap-chang\u00aders, so there\u2019s a lot of wear on the con\u00adtacts and more dirt,\u201d explains Christoph. Once every\u00adthing has been mea\u00adsured, checked, cleaned and ser\u00adviced, the divert\u00ader switch inserts are reassem\u00adbled. Tap-chang\u00ader main\u00adte\u00adnance nor\u00admal\u00adly takes eight to ten hours, so there is not much room for delays. A tech\u00adni\u00adcian nor\u00admal\u00adly looks after one tap-chang\u00ader alone and dur\u00ading the three days that they are on duty at \u010cEPS, Christoph and Andreas also check the des\u00adig\u00adnat\u00aded loca\u00adtion in the trans\u00adformer. This includes check\u00ading and clean\u00ading the oil tank, ser\u00advic\u00ading the link\u00adage, check\u00ading the upper gear unit and the pro\u00adtec\u00adtive relays, and final\u00adly test\u00ading the entire on-load tap-chang\u00ader to ensure that it is work\u00ading prop\u00ader\u00adly. The work on the trans\u00adformer also takes an entire work\u00ading day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Once cleaned, ser\u00adviced and test\u00aded, the on-load tap-chang\u00aders are returned to the trans\u00adformer. The insu\u00adlat\u00ading oil is then refilled and test switch\u00ading oper\u00ada\u00adtions are car\u00adried out.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Final\u00adly, the job ends as it began: The tap-chang\u00aders are rein\u00adstalled by crane, the oil is filled in and test switch\u00ading is car\u00adried out. Once the trans\u00adformer is prop\u00ader\u00adly run\u00adning again, the ser\u00advice tech\u00adni\u00adcians offi\u00adcial\u00adly hand it back to the oper\u00ada\u00adtor togeth\u00ader with their ser\u00advice report. Jan L\u00e1la is sat\u00adis\u00adfied: \u201cWith MR Ser\u00advice, we are sim\u00adply using the best pos\u00adsi\u00adble ser\u00advice qual\u00adi\u00adty.\u201d And so ends a short assign\u00adment for the MR team.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A profession for doers<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Christoph is usu\u00adal\u00adly on the road alone, often for sev\u00ader\u00adal weeks. As he explains: \u201cThat\u2019s the great thing about the job \u2013 you\u2019re your own boss. You know what you have to do, you can focus entire\u00adly on your task and your pace and look back on your work with pride at the end. You can see what you have achieved.\u201d And the ser\u00advice tech\u00adni\u00adcians also get around a lot. \u201cI\u2019m always some\u00adwhere else in the world and see places that a tourist wouldn\u2019t even get to. In no oth\u00ader job in the world would I have enough vaca\u00adtion days that I could get to know so many coun\u00adtries and peo\u00adple as through this job,\u201d explains Christoph.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Four years ago, Christoph left his job as a trained indus\u00adtri\u00adal mechan\u00adic to gain this expe\u00adri\u00adence and inde\u00adpen\u00addence by com\u00adplet\u00ading a one-year train\u00ading course to become a ser\u00advice tech\u00adni\u00adcian at MR. Since then, he has been on the road around 200 days a year. Andreas, who joined MR as a trained met\u00adal\u00adwork\u00ader and is just fin\u00adish\u00ading his train\u00ading as a ser\u00advice tech\u00adni\u00adcian, is also enthu\u00adsi\u00adas\u00adtic: \u201cThe train\u00ading is very com\u00adpre\u00adhen\u00adsive. Despite my appren\u00adtice\u00adship as a fit\u00adter, I was a full year into my appren\u00adtice\u00adship at MR before going out into the field on my own for the first time. This sim\u00adply makes me feel well pre\u00adpared and gives me the con\u00adfi\u00addence I need: I know I can do the job well and clean\u00adly \u2013 and get to know new peo\u00adple and places in the process.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This is also MR\u2019s recipe for suc\u00adcess: career chang\u00aders with an elec\u00adtri\u00adcal engi\u00adneer\u00ading or mecha\u00adtron\u00adics back\u00adground are wel\u00adcome, as they first have a full year of inten\u00adsive train\u00ading with the com\u00adpre\u00adhen\u00adsive expert know-how that makes MR spe\u00adcial. And that attracts per\u00adson\u00adal\u00adi\u00adties, explains Uwe Selt\u00adsam. \u201cThe job is for doers and explor\u00aders. Peo\u00adple who like to orga\u00adnize them\u00adselves and want to see some\u00adthing of the world, and who have some \u2018ants in their pants\u2019 \u2013 they\u2019re per\u00adfect for it.\u201d Selt\u00adsam knows what he\u2019s talk\u00ading about; after all, he worked as a ser\u00advice spe\u00adcial\u00adist for sev\u00aden years him\u00adself and has fond mem\u00ado\u00adries of that time. Because the assign\u00adments are always dif\u00adfer\u00adent and always new, and impro\u00advi\u00adsa\u00adtion is often required. Con\u00addi\u00adtions are not always as lux\u00adu\u00adri\u00adous as those in Hradec where the sub\u00adsta\u00adtion even has its own work\u00adshop with a large oil pan and per\u00adfect light\u00ading. \u201cBut that\u2019s exact\u00adly why we are hap\u00adpy to invest in the train\u00ading year. After that, it\u2019s clear that our tech\u00adni\u00adcians are ful\u00adly trained and can deliv\u00ader MR qual\u00adi\u00adty every\u00adwhere.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
