For exam\u00adple, the cost of elec\u00adtric\u00adi\u00adty for new\u00adly com\u00admis\u00adsioned pho\u00adto\u00advolta\u00adic (PV) projects fell by around 85 per\u00adcent between 2010 and 2020 alone. Onshore wind pow\u00ader has become 56 per\u00adcent cheap\u00ader and off\u00adshore wind pow\u00ader 48 per\u00adcent cheap\u00ader. So if we look at the expan\u00adsion of capac\u00adi\u00adties in the elec\u00adtric\u00adi\u00adty sec\u00adtor alone, the ener\u00adgy tran\u00adsi\u00adtion is on the right track: solar and wind tech\u00adnolo\u00adgies have con\u00adsol\u00adi\u00addat\u00aded their posi\u00adtions and, giv\u00aden the ris\u00ading prices of fos\u00adsil fuels, the eco\u00adnom\u00adic prospects are unde\u00adni\u00adably good.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In con\u00adtrast, the con\u00adver\u00adsion of indus\u00adtri\u00adal process\u00ades as well as heat\u00ading and trans\u00adport are lag\u00adging far behind the tar\u00adgets, although the con\u00adver\u00adsion of these sec\u00adtors is essen\u00adtial. The experts at the Inter\u00adna\u00adtion\u00adal Renew\u00adable Ener\u00adgy Agency (IRENA) are look\u00ading at how the ener\u00adgy tran\u00adsi\u00adtion can still be achieved in light of these real\u00adi\u00adties. They make it clear that the cli\u00admate tar\u00adgets can only be achieved if fos\u00adsil fuels are mas\u00adsive\u00adly replaced by renew\u00adables now. Rad\u00adi\u00adcal mea\u00adsures are need\u00aded to turn the tide. But even if the 1.5\u2011degree mark is bro\u00adken, there is no way around a glob\u00adal ener\u00adgy tran\u00adsi\u00adtion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Exponential growth<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The next six years are cru\u00adcial for suc\u00adcess. Dur\u00ading this time, there will be a dras\u00adtic change in the way soci\u00adeties gen\u00ader\u00adate and con\u00adsume ener\u00adgy, and the share of renew\u00adable ener\u00adgies must dou\u00adble by 2030. In addi\u00adtion to the manda\u00adto\u00adry expan\u00adsion of wind and solar pow\u00ader, this will also require green hydro\u00adgen and more sus\u00adtain\u00adable bio\u00admass, for all of which impor\u00adtant foun\u00adda\u00adtions will be laid in the com\u00ading years. The expla\u00adna\u00adtion for this is the replace\u00adment of use\u00adful ener\u00adgy with renew\u00adable ener\u00adgy sources. This is because the major\u00adi\u00adty of pri\u00adma\u00adry ener\u00adgy is saved. While wind and PV pro\u00adduce elec\u00adtric\u00adi\u00adty direct\u00adly, a ther\u00admal pow\u00ader plant gen\u00ader\u00adates two-thirds heat and only one-third elec\u00adtric\u00adi\u00adty from the pri\u00adma\u00adry ener\u00adgy. The same applies to com\u00adbus\u00adtion engines, and a bat\u00adtery-pow\u00adered vehi\u00adcle there\u00adfore only requires a quar\u00adter to a third of the ener\u00adgy. Heat pumps there\u00adfore triple the ener\u00adgy input.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The ener\u00adgy indus\u00adtry is there\u00adfore fac\u00ading major chal\u00adlenges. What are the next steps in this glob\u00adal trans\u00adfor\u00adma\u00adtion process and how will they affect the elec\u00adtric\u00adi\u00adty grids?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Less fossil fuel<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In order to achieve the glob\u00adal tar\u00adgets for reduc\u00ading CO<sub>2<\/sub> emis\u00adsions, the pro\u00adpor\u00adtion of fos\u00adsil fuel in total ener\u00adgy require\u00adments must be con\u00adsis\u00adtent\u00adly reduced. Cur\u00adrent\u00adly, around 80 per\u00adcent of ener\u00adgy comes from fos\u00adsil sources. By 2030, this pro\u00adpor\u00adtion is set to fall to 60 per\u00adcent and final\u00adly shrink to just 20 per\u00adcent by 2050. This dras\u00adtic reduc\u00adtion will take place while over\u00adall ener\u00adgy require\u00adments remain vir\u00adtu\u00adal\u00adly unchanged.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The gap cre\u00adat\u00aded by the reduc\u00adtion in fos\u00adsil fuels must be filled by renew\u00adable ener\u00adgies. Their share of total ener\u00adgy demand is set to rise from the cur\u00adrent 20 per\u00adcent to 40 per\u00adcent by 2030 and ulti\u00admate\u00adly to an impres\u00adsive 80 per\u00adcent by 2050. The share of elec\u00adtri\u00adcal ener\u00adgy in total ener\u00adgy demand will increase from the cur\u00adrent 20 per\u00adcent to 30 per\u00adcent by 2030 and ulti\u00admate\u00adly to a full 50 per\u00adcent by 2050. This means that the demand for elec\u00adtri\u00adcal ener\u00adgy will grow by 50 per\u00adcent by 2030 and more than dou\u00adble by 2050 (fac\u00adtor of 2.5). Mea\u00adsured in terms of con\u00adnect\u00aded load, by 2050 the elec\u00adtric\u00adi\u00adty grids will even have to absorb ten times the amount of renew\u00adable gen\u00ader\u00ada\u00adtors. The fig\u00adures make one thing clear: the ener\u00adgy tran\u00adsi\u00adtion is a glob\u00adal elec\u00adtri\u00adfi\u00adca\u00adtion pro\u00adgram.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Network expansion<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In order to cope with this dra\u00admat\u00adic increase in demand for elec\u00adtri\u00adcal ener\u00adgy, the elec\u00adtric\u00adi\u00adty grids need to be mas\u00adsive\u00adly expand\u00aded. An ener\u00adgy sup\u00adply that is increas\u00ading\u00adly based on elec\u00adtric\u00adi\u00adty and wants to ensure a reli\u00adable and sta\u00adble ener\u00adgy sup\u00adply requires more pow\u00ader\u00adful and, above all, more flex\u00adi\u00adble grids.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>New tech\u00adnolo\u00adgies and inno\u00adva\u00adtions play a key role in this process. Smart elec\u00adtric\u00adi\u00adty meters, auto\u00admat\u00aded con\u00adtrol sys\u00adtems for oper\u00adat\u00ading equip\u00adment, ener\u00adgy stor\u00adage sys\u00adtems, effi\u00adcient con\u00advert\u00aders, and effi\u00adcient trans\u00admis\u00adsion tech\u00adnolo\u00adgies will deter\u00admine the suc\u00adcess of this trans\u00adfor\u00adma\u00adtion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The future of the ener\u00adgy tran\u00adsi\u00adtion there\u00adfore lies in the grids.
