In neigh\u00adbor\u00adhoods with high solar adop\u00adtion rates, capac\u00adi\u00adty from both load and over\u00advolt\u00adage can be reached quick\u00adly. This is evi\u00addent on a street in south\u00adern New Jer\u00adsey, with\u00adin the ser\u00advice ter\u00adri\u00adto\u00adry of Atlantic City Elec\u00adtric (ACE). ACE is a sub\u00adsidiary of PHI (as part of the Exelon Oper\u00adat\u00ading Com\u00adpa\u00adnies). For this project, PHI man\u00adages the plan\u00adning and imple\u00admen\u00adta\u00adtion. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>John Budd, a Prin\u00adci\u00adpal Engi\u00adneer of PHI, is tasked with iden\u00adti\u00adfy\u00ading solu\u00adtions for the fol\u00adlow\u00ading sce\u00adnario: \u201cA cus\u00adtomer sought to con\u00adnect their PV array. As they\u2019re in the inter\u00adcon\u00adnec\u00adtion queue, ACE was unable to approve their inter\u00adcon\u00adnec\u00adtion per\u00admit as there were already five arrays con\u00adnect\u00aded to this 25 kVA trans\u00adformer, reach\u00ading the trans\u00adformer load lim\u00adit.\u201d In search of a solu\u00adtion to accom\u00admo\u00addate res\u00adi\u00adden\u00adtial cus\u00adtomers with their solar inter\u00adcon\u00adnec\u00adtion, and con\u00adsid\u00ader\u00ading con\u00adstruct\u00ading new lines would have been pro\u00adhib\u00adi\u00adtive\u00adly expen\u00adsive, PHI opt\u00aded to install a 50 kVA sin\u00adgle-phase VRDT to the line and tie four of the hous\u00ades with solar PV to this new trans\u00adformer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p> \u201cThe instal\u00adla\u00adtion was as straight\u00adfor\u00adward as that of a stan\u00addard trans\u00adformer. Imme\u00addi\u00adate\u00adly after the load was con\u00adnect\u00aded, the VRDT adjust\u00aded the volt\u00adage autonomous\u00adly with\u00adin the spec\u00adi\u00adfied range through a tap-change oper\u00ada\u00adtion,\u201d explains Budd.
