With around 400,000 kilo\u00adme\u00adters of high-volt\u00adage lines, thou\u00adsands of sub\u00adsta\u00adtions and trans\u00adformer sta\u00adtions and over 1,700 dis\u00adtri\u00adb\u00adu\u00adtion grid oper\u00ada\u00adtors, the US pow\u00ader grid is one of the largest and most com\u00adplex tech\u00adni\u00adcal sys\u00adtems in the world. Over 3,000 com\u00adpa\u00adnies are involved in the sup\u00adply of elec\u00adtric\u00adi\u00adty and deliv\u00ader an ener\u00adgy mix in which renew\u00adable ener\u00adgies (RE) play an increas\u00ading\u00adly impor\u00adtant role. The share of RE has risen from around ten per\u00adcent in 2010 to over 22 per\u00adcent today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Solar and wind pow\u00ader are the most impor\u00adtant sources. Tar\u00adget\u00aded gov\u00adern\u00adment sup\u00adport, such as the Infla\u00adtion Reduc\u00adtion Act (IRA) signed in 2022, has already led to sig\u00adnif\u00adi\u00adcant invest\u00adment in these tech\u00adnolo\u00adgies. In 2023, the USA had an installed wind capac\u00adi\u00adty of more than 130 gigawatts and an installed solar capac\u00adi\u00adty of around 120 gigawatts. And accord\u00ading to the U.S. Ener\u00adgy Infor\u00adma\u00adtion Admin\u00adis\u00adtra\u00adtion (EIA), the share of renew\u00adables in the U.S. elec\u00adtric\u00adi\u00adty mix is expect\u00aded to grow to around 44 per\u00adcent by 2050.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group mgznkr-elements mgznkr-box\"><div class=\"wp-block-group__inner-container is-layout-flow wp-block-group-is-layout-flow\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-9d6595d7 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-center no-margin-bottom\" style=\"font-size:65px\"><span class=\"mgznkr-counter m4w-counter  \" data-mode=\"de\" data-delay=\"120\" data-time=\"1500\" data-val=\"16\">0<\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-center no-margin-top no-margin-bottom\">percent<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\">of the world\u2019s elec\u00adtric\u00adi\u00adty is trans\u00adport\u00aded through the elec\u00adtric\u00adi\u00adty grids in the USA.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-center no-margin-bottom\" style=\"font-size:65px\"><span class=\"mgznkr-counter m4w-counter  \" data-mode=\"de\" data-delay=\"120\" data-time=\"1500\" data-val=\"1700\">0<\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-center no-margin-top no-margin-bottom\">grid operators<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\">in the USA, mak\u00ading it one of the most com\u00adplex grids in the world.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">More electricity through older grids<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>How\u00adev\u00ader, the ambi\u00adtious cli\u00admate tar\u00adgets are com\u00ading up against a large\u00adly out\u00addat\u00aded infra\u00adstruc\u00adture. Accord\u00ading to reports from the US Depart\u00adment of Ener\u00adgy (DOE) and orga\u00adni\u00adza\u00adtions such as the Nation\u00adal Renew\u00adable Ener\u00adgy Lab\u00ado\u00adra\u00adto\u00adry (NREL), parts of today\u2019s pow\u00ader grids, such as trans\u00admis\u00adsion lines and trans\u00adform\u00aders, date back to the 1960s or even the 1950s. About 70 per\u00adcent of the trans\u00admis\u00adsion lines in the U.S. are over 25 years old. The expan\u00adsion of the trans\u00admis\u00adsion grids and the elim\u00adi\u00adna\u00adtion of grid bot\u00adtle\u00adnecks are there\u00adfore the key tasks for advanc\u00ading the inte\u00adgra\u00adtion of renew\u00adables and achiev\u00ading the cli\u00admate tar\u00adgets. \u201cAnd this affects all grid lev\u00adels,\u201d says Robert Vary, CEO and Pres\u00adi\u00addent of Rein\u00adhausen Man\u00adu\u00adfac\u00adtur\u00ading, adding: \u201cFrom pri\u00advate rooftop solar sys\u00adtems to large off\u00adshore wind farms and solar parks, more and more elec\u00adtric\u00adi\u00adty will have to be fed into the grid in the future. The aim is to dou\u00adble the trans\u00admis\u00adsion capac\u00adi\u00adty of the exist\u00ading elec\u00adtric\u00adi\u00adty grid with\u00adout adding new lines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>State\u00adments from the Inter\u00adna\u00adtion\u00adal Ener\u00adgy Agency (IEA) and the Nation\u00adal Renew\u00adable Ener\u00adgy Lab\u00ado\u00adra\u00adto\u00adry (NREL) indi\u00adcate that the mod\u00adern\u00adiza\u00adtion of infra\u00adstruc\u00adture, espe\u00adcial\u00adly through dig\u00adi\u00adtal\u00adized trans\u00adform\u00aders and switch\u00ading trans\u00adform\u00aders, could play a key role in improv\u00ading grid sta\u00adbil\u00adi\u00adty. Trans\u00adform\u00aders can be mon\u00adi\u00adtored and make a sig\u00adnif\u00adi\u00adcant con\u00adtri\u00adbu\u00adtion to the sta\u00adbil\u00adi\u00adty, reli\u00ada\u00adbil\u00adi\u00adty and resilience of the grids. The NREL also empha\u00adsizes the pos\u00adsi\u00adbil\u00adi\u00adties for pre\u00addic\u00adtive main\u00adte\u00adnance. Dig\u00adi\u00adtal\u00adized trans\u00adform\u00aders can reduce fail\u00adures and increase effi\u00adcien\u00adcy. Con\u00adtin\u00adu\u00adous mon\u00adi\u00adtor\u00ading of oper\u00adat\u00ading para\u00adme\u00adters is also pos\u00adsi\u00adble. The advan\u00adtage: few\u00ader fail\u00adures and low\u00ader main\u00adte\u00adnance costs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Increasing the efficiency of grids with digital transformers<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Anoth\u00ader fac\u00adtor is that the work\u00adforce in the US ener\u00adgy sec\u00adtor is cur\u00adrent\u00adly expe\u00adri\u00adenc\u00ading a demo\u00adgraph\u00adic tran\u00adsi\u00adtion, with many sea\u00adsoned pro\u00adfes\u00adsion\u00adals approach\u00ading retire\u00adment, high\u00adlight\u00ading the val\u00adue of their exper\u00adtise and the impor\u00adtance of prepar\u00ading for the next gen\u00ader\u00ada\u00adtion of tal\u00adent. Accord\u00ading to the U.S. Depart\u00adment of Energy\u2019s 2023 U.S. Ener\u00adgy Employ\u00adment Report (USEER), many employ\u00adees in tech\u00adni\u00adcal posi\u00adtions in the ener\u00adgy sup\u00adply sec\u00adtor are close to retire\u00adment. Over the next ten years, com\u00adpa\u00adnies will lose many expe\u00adri\u00adenced spe\u00adcial\u00adists and their exper\u00adtise, which can\u00adnot be eas\u00adi\u00adly replaced due to the short\u00adage of skilled work\u00aders. Here, too, trans\u00adformer dig\u00adi\u00adtal\u00adiza\u00adtion can make an impor\u00adtant con\u00adtri\u00adbu\u00adtion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dig\u00adi\u00adtal tech\u00adnolo\u00adgies there\u00adfore also play a key role in the USA in accel\u00ader\u00adat\u00ading the tran\u00adsi\u00adtion to a sus\u00adtain\u00adable ener\u00adgy sys\u00adtem by sup\u00adport\u00ading both grid sta\u00adbil\u00adi\u00adty and the inte\u00adgra\u00adtion of renew\u00adable ener\u00adgies.
