But the job for (Lab\u00ado\u00adra\u00adtoire europ\u00e9en pour la physique des par\u00adtic\u00adules) near Gene\u00adva was some\u00adthing very spe\u00adcial for the Aachen-based com\u00adpa\u00adny. Found\u00aded in 1954, the Euro\u00adpean lab\u00ado\u00adra\u00adto\u00adry enables par\u00adti\u00adcle physi\u00adcists to car\u00adry out cut\u00adting-edge inter\u00adna\u00adtion\u00adal research using the most pow\u00ader\u00adful par\u00adti\u00adcle accel\u00ader\u00ada\u00adtors in the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The research site, which cov\u00aders around 600 hectares, is home to a gigan\u00adtic com\u00adplex of par\u00adti\u00adcle accel\u00ader\u00ada\u00adtors that are con\u00adnect\u00aded to each oth\u00ader via a tun\u00adnel sys\u00adtem sev\u00ader\u00adal kilo\u00adme\u00adters long. There are also var\u00adi\u00adous exper\u00adi\u00admen\u00adtal areas, such as the North Area which has been used for physics exper\u00adi\u00adments since the 1970s as part of the Super Pro\u00adton Syn\u00adchro\u00adtron (SPS). As the facil\u00adi\u00adty is get\u00adting on in years, it has been under\u00adgo\u00ading ren\u00ado\u00adva\u00adtion since 2021. We always received a quick response to our ques\u00adtions.\u201d<\/p>\n<cite>Ivan Josi\u00adfovic, Project Man\u00adag\u00ader CERN<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:10px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Perfectly transformed<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The POLARIS pow\u00ader con\u00advert\u00aders devel\u00adoped by CERN are a key com\u00adpo\u00adnent. Their func\u00adtion is to pre\u00adcise\u00adly con\u00adtrol the mag\u00adnet\u00adic field of the par\u00adti\u00adcle accel\u00ader\u00ada\u00adtors in order to accel\u00ader\u00adate elec\u00adtrons and pro\u00adtons to almost the speed of light. To do this, they con\u00advert the alter\u00adnat\u00ading cur\u00adrent from the pow\u00ader grid into direct cur\u00adrent and pass it on to the par\u00adti\u00adcle accelerator\u2019s elec\u00adtro\u00admag\u00adnets. How\u00adev\u00ader, the cur\u00adrent is dis\u00adtort\u00aded dur\u00ading the con\u00adver\u00adsion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ivan Josi\u00adfovic explains it like this: \u201cIf you were to rep\u00adre\u00adsent direct cur\u00adrent graph\u00adi\u00adcal\u00adly, it would be a straight line. The con\u00adver\u00adsion caus\u00ades it to line, so min\u00adi\u00admiz\u00ading cur\u00adrent devi\u00ada\u00adtions is crit\u00adi\u00adcal across the accel\u00ader\u00ada\u00adtor.\u201d To pre\u00advent out\u00adliers, CERN there\u00adfore relies on fil\u00adter chokes from MANGOLDT in the North Area project. There are three chokes in each pow\u00ader con\u00advert\u00ader. The first is a so-called DC-link fil\u00adter choke, which draws the cur\u00adrent from the pow\u00ader grid and pass\u00ades it on to two high-fre\u00adquen\u00adcy chokes for con\u00adtrol of pow\u00ader exchange with the elec\u00adtro\u00admag\u00adnets. Ivan Josi\u00adfovic from CERN says: \u201cThe high-fre\u00adquen\u00adcy chokes have to work very pre\u00adcise\u00adly in order to smooth out the out\u00adliers.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>By pre\u00adcise work, Josi\u00adfovic means the low\u00adest pos\u00adsi\u00adble devi\u00ada\u00adtion of the chokes. A choke has two main com\u00adpo\u00adnents: a core made of sheet iron and a wind\u00ading con\u00adsist\u00ading of coiled insu\u00adla\u00adtion mate\u00adr\u00adi\u00adal and alu\u00adminum or cop\u00adper strip. The iron core is divid\u00aded into sev\u00ader\u00adal seg\u00adments by spe\u00adcial air gaps. Michael E\u00dfer explains: \u201cWith the size and num\u00adber of air gaps, we can adjust the induc\u00adtance and meet CERN\u2019s require\u00adments.\u201d In addi\u00adtion to induc\u00adtiv\u00adi\u00adty, Josi\u00adfovic believes anoth\u00ader prop\u00ader\u00adty is cru\u00adcial: \u201cThe high-fre\u00adquen\u00adcy chokes must not get hot\u00adter than 70 degrees Cel\u00adsius dur\u00ading use. Oth\u00ader\u00adwise this short\u00adens their ser\u00advice life.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To com\u00adply with this lim\u00adit, MANGOLDT uses par\u00adtic\u00adu\u00adlar\u00adly thin sheet iron, as this gen\u00ader\u00adates very lit\u00adtle waste heat. \u201cWe are very sat\u00adis\u00adfied with the pro\u00adfes\u00adsion\u00adal coop\u00ader\u00ada\u00adtion with MANGOLDT. A total of 3,750 chokes are need\u00aded in the POLARIS Pow\u00ader Con\u00advert\u00aders to sup\u00adply the mag\u00adnets with elec\u00adtric\u00adi\u00adty.
