Regens\u00adburg in the sum\u00admer of 2025. Series pro\u00adduc\u00adtion of the new VACUTAP\u00ae<\/sup> VI begins. Five years of devel\u00adop\u00adment work have gone into the inno\u00adv\u00ada\u00adtive tap-chang\u00ader con\u00adcept, which takes up sig\u00adni\ufb01\u00adcant\u00adly less space than con\u00adven\u00adtion\u00adal on-load tap-chang\u00aders. All tests have been passed, and now the time has \ufb01nal\u00adly come for it to con\u00adquer the world\u2019s trans\u00adform\u00aders. In August, the \ufb01rst two new tap chang\u00aders leave the fac\u00adto\u00adry. One is on its way to Czechia, not far from the Pol\u00adish bor\u00adder, but only for a stopover; it will even\u00adtu\u00adal\u00adly be put into ser\u00advice in Geor\u00adgia. The oth\u00ader is head\u00aded to the far north of Nor\u00adway. There, the VACUTAP\u00ae<\/sup> VI will even be used in an appli\u00adca\u00adtion for which it was not orig\u00adi\u00adnal\u00adly intend\u00aded. Two site vis\u00adits. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Elpro-Ener\u00adgo Trans\u00adform\u00aders s.r.o., based in Hno\u00adjn\u00edk, Czech Repub\u00adlic, is still a rel\u00ada\u00adtive\u00adly young com\u00adpa\u00adny, but since its found\u00ading in 2018, it has quick\u00adly become a sought-after man\u00adu\u00adfac\u00adtur\u00ader of dis\u00adtri\u00adb\u00adu\u00adtion trans\u00adform\u00aders. Today, Elpro-Ener\u00adgo Trans\u00adform\u00aders employs around 130 peo\u00adple and pro\u00adduces up to 3,000 trans\u00adform\u00aders annu\u00adal\u00adly, pri\u00admar\u00adi\u00adly for dis\u00adtri\u00adb\u00adu\u00adtion net\u00adwork oper\u00ada\u00adtors, but also for indus\u00adtri\u00adal com\u00adpa\u00adnies, pow\u00ader plants, and pub\u00adlic insti\u00adtu\u00adtions such as hos\u00adpi\u00adtals. usi\u00adness is going well, but the mar\u00adket served by the Czech man\u00adu\u00adfac\u00adtur\u00ader is also very volatile, as elec\u00adtri\u00adcal engi\u00adneer Miroslav Mra\u00adj\u00adca reports:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Anoth\u00ader lever is inno\u00adv\u00ada\u00adtive prod\u00aducts that enable the trans\u00adformer man\u00adu\u00adfac\u00adtur\u00ader to stand out from the crowd. Mra\u00adj\u00adca explains: \u201cThis requires opti\u00admiz\u00ading trans\u00adformer designs while at the same time fur\u00adther devel\u00adop\u00ading trans\u00adform\u00aders with mod\u00adern tech\u00adnolo\u00adgies.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A product that was still missing <\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Elpro-Ener\u00adgo Trans\u00adform\u00aders there\u00adfore wel\u00adcomes inno\u00adva\u00adtions such as the new VACUTAP\u00ae<\/sup> VI on-load tap-chang\u00ader. The com\u00adpa\u00adny has used this inno\u00adv\u00ada\u00adtive switch con\u00adcept for the \ufb01rst time in a trans\u00adformer with a capac\u00adi\u00adty of 2,500 kilo\u00advolt-amperes for a cus\u00adtomer in Geor\u00adgia. The cus\u00adtomer want\u00aded a very com\u00adpact solu\u00adtion, but with a rat\u00aded volt\u00adage of 6 kilo\u00advolts, the cur\u00adrent exceed\u00aded 100 amperes.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

This was too high for the ECOTAP\u00ae<\/sup> VPD\u00ae<\/sup> from MR, which Elpro-Ener\u00adgo Trans\u00adform\u00aders usu\u00adal\u00adly uses for such appli\u00adca\u00adtions. The very com\u00adpact design of the VACUTAP\u00ae<\/sup> VI, com\u00adbined with its high per\u00adfor\u00admance, there\u00adfore imme\u00addi\u00adate\u00adly con\u00advinced Mra\u00adj\u00adca. The new tap chang\u00ader can  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

han\u00addle cur\u00adrents of up to 400 amperes at up to 27 tap posi\u00adtions. \u201cThe advan\u00adtage is that the tank and cov\u00ader of the trans\u00adformer do not require any spe\u00adcial mod\u00adi\ufb01\u00adca\u00adtions, except for a built-in \ufb02ange plate, which great\u00adly sim\u00adpli\ufb01es cal\u00adcu\u00adla\u00adtions and draw\u00adings in the plan\u00adning phase. In addi\u00adtion, con\u00adnect\u00ading the wind\u00adings to the tap-chang\u00ader con\u00adtacts is straight\u00adfor\u00adward, as all out\u00adputs are locat\u00aded on one side,\u201d says Mra\u00adj\u00adca.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This makes assem\u00adbly very quick and easy for pro\u00adduc\u00adtion per\u00adson\u00adnel. Mra\u00adj\u00adca also sees a major advan\u00adtage in the fact that the shared oil sup\u00adply means that the tank size can be small\u00ader, which not only saves mate\u00adr\u00adi\u00adal but also requires less oil. This is not only an impor\u00adtant plus point in terms of costs and the envi\u00adron\u00adment, but also opens up new oppor\u00adtu\u00adni\u00adties for grid oper\u00ada\u00adtors because the space required for trans\u00adform\u00aders in sub\u00adsta\u00adtions is reduced\u2013while per\u00adfor\u00admance lev\u00adels are main\u00adtained.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The trans\u00adformer for the Geor\u00adgian cus\u00adtomer is there\u00adfore unlike\u00adly to be the last one that Elpro-Ener\u00adgo-Trans\u00adform\u00aders equips with the VACUTAP\u00ae<\/sup> VI. Mra\u00adj\u00adca sees great poten\u00adtial, espe\u00adcial\u00adly for small\u00ader trans\u00adform\u00aders where larg\u00ader vac\u00adu\u00adum tap chang\u00aders would be over\u00adsized but the ECOTAP\u00ae<\/sup> VPD\u00ae<\/sup> reach\u00ades its per\u00adfor\u00admance lim\u00adits. \u201cI think such a prod\u00aduct has been miss\u00ading in the OLTC mar\u00adket until now,\u201d says Mra\u00adj\u00adca.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

With its majes\u00adtic fjords, rugged moun\u00adtains and deep val\u00adleys, thou\u00adsands of lakes and vast forests, Nor\u00adway is known for its unspoiled nature. With a pop\u00adu\u00adla\u00adtion of just under six mil\u00adlion inhab\u00adi\u00adtants in an area rough\u00adly equiv\u00ada\u00adlent to that of Ger\u00admany, the coun\u00adtry is very sparse\u00adly pop\u00adu\u00adlat\u00aded. Except for urban cen\u00adters such as Oslo, Bergen, and Trond\u00adheim in the south and south\u00adwest, many com\u00admu\u00adni\u00adties and towns are scat\u00adtered far apart and often very remote. What makes the land\u00adscape so appeal\u00ading is a real chal\u00adlenge for reli\u00adable pow\u00ader sup\u00adply. Since medi\u00adum-volt\u00adage lines from the grid con\u00adnec\u00adtion point to the near\u00adest set\u00adtle\u00adment are often twen\u00adty kilo\u00adme\u00adters or longer, keep\u00ading the volt\u00adage sta\u00adble for con\u00adsumers here is any\u00adthing but easy. In addi\u00adtion, elec\u00adtric\u00adi\u00adty demand \ufb02uc\u00adtu\u00adates great\u00adly between win\u00adter and sum\u00admer, as heat\u00ading in Nor\u00adway is pre\u00addom\u00adi\u00adnant\u00adly elec\u00adtric.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Magtech AS, based in Steinkjer, spe\u00adcial\u00adizes in prob\u00adlems like these. Found\u00aded in 2001, the com\u00adpa\u00adny o\u00abers inno\u00adv\u00ada\u00adtive solu\u00adtions for volt\u00adage reg\u00adu\u00adla\u00adtion and grid opti\u00admiza\u00adtion and man\u00adu\u00adfac\u00adtures volt\u00adage reg\u00adu\u00adlat\u00aded dis\u00adtri\u00adb\u00adu\u00adtion trans\u00adform\u00aders and volt\u00adage boost\u00aders as well as volt\u00adage reg\u00adu\u00adla\u00adtors for medi\u00adum-volt\u00adage net\u00adworks (MV reg\u00adu\u00adla\u00adtors). An MV reg\u00adu\u00adla\u00adtor com\u00adpen\u00adsates for volt\u00adage drops or ris\u00ades in the mid\u00addle or last third of long lines. But it can do even more, as Alexan\u00adder Kris\u00adtensen, CCO at Magtech, explains: \u201cEven if the ther\u00admal capac\u00adi\u00adty of the line is avail\u00adable, the volt\u00adage drop means that, with\u00adout reg\u00adu\u00adla\u00adtion, not all of the pow\u00ader can be trans\u00admit\u00adted. Depend\u00ading on the design, an MV reg\u00adu\u00adla\u00adtor can even triple the capac\u00adi\u00adty of a line.\u201d This elim\u00adi\u00adnates the need for com\u00adplex and cost\u00adly grid expan\u00adsion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cLast win\u00adter was extreme\u00adly warm in Nor\u00adway, and the snow began to melt at a time when tem\u00adper\u00ada\u00adtures nor\u00admal\u00adly hov\u00ader around minus 20 degrees Cel\u00adsius. All reg\u00adu\u00adla\u00adtors and trans\u00adform\u00aders are designed for win\u00adter con\u00addi\u00adtions, but sud\u00adden\u00adly there was decen\u00adtral\u00adized, unreg\u00adu\u00adlat\u00aded hydropow\u00ader that was not planned for. This de\ufb01nite\u00adly caus\u00ades a lot of prob\u00adlems for dis\u00adtri\u00adb\u00adu\u00adtion net\u00adwork oper\u00ada\u00adtors,\u201d explains Kris\u00adtensen. As such events become more fre\u00adquent, there are increas\u00ading\u00adly cas\u00ades where Magtech has to sup\u00adply its volt\u00adage reg\u00adu\u00adla\u00adtors even fol\u00adlow\u00ading con\u00adven\u00adtion\u00adal grid expan\u00adsion, because the grid expan\u00adsion alone was not suf\u00adfi\u00adcient to solve the volt\u00adage prob\u00adlems.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

More capacity for Lofoten <\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Until now, Magtech has relied on ECOTAP\u00ae<\/sup> VPD\u00ae<\/sup> for its MV reg\u00adu\u00adla\u00adtors. Last year, the man\u00adu\u00adfac\u00adtur\u00ader even received a Nor\u00adwe\u00adgian inno\u00adva\u00adtion award for its device con\u00adcept. How\u00adev\u00ader, there are increas\u00ading requests from cus\u00adtomers who require more pow\u00ader\u00adful devices. One such cus\u00adtomer is the ener\u00adgy sup\u00adpli\u00ader ELMEA, which sup\u00adplies elec\u00adtric\u00adi\u00adty to the Lofoten Islands, a remote arch\u00adi\u00adpel\u00adago in north\u00adern Nor\u00adway. It need\u00aded an MV reg\u00adu\u00adla\u00adtor with 10 MVA. How\u00adev\u00ader, with the ECOTAP\u00ae<\/sup> VPD\u00ae<\/sup> and its max\u00adi\u00admum cur\u00adrent of 100 amps, the lim\u00adit is already reached at a load lim\u00adit of 3.3 MVA when oper\u00adat\u00ading at 22 kV. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The new VACUTAP\u00ae<\/sup> VI opens up com\u00adplete\u00adly new pos\u00adsi\u00adbil\u00adi\u00adties here. \u201cWe had to adapt our design because the VACUTAP\u00ae VI is actu\u00adal\u00adly designed for pow\u00ader trans\u00adform\u00aders and not for appli\u00adca\u00adtions like ours. But in the end, instal\u00adla\u00adtion is still quite sim\u00adple,\u201d says Kris\u00adtensen. Although the MV reg\u00adu\u00adla\u00adtor with the new tap chang\u00ader is now longer, it is still sig\u00adni\ufb01\u00adcant\u00adly more com\u00adpact than devices from oth\u00ader man\u00adu\u00adfac\u00adtur\u00aders in this pow\u00ader class. \u201cI think we have a real\u00adly good prod\u00aduct here that is also very cost\u2011e\u00abective,\u201d says Kris\u00adtensen.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Since the ECOTAP\u00ae<\/sup> VPD\u00ae<\/sup> also shares the oil sup\u00adply with the wind\u00adings in the tank, switch\u00ading to the new tap chang\u00ader was not a major change. The most impor\u00adtant aspect is that vac\u00adu\u00adum tech\u00adnol\u00ado\u00adgy allows up to 300,000 switch\u00ading oper\u00ada\u00adtions with\u00adout main\u00adte\u00adnance, which is espe\u00adcial\u00adly impor\u00adtant for Magtech since its devices are used in very remote regions. \u201cOur cus\u00adtomers are very satis\ufb01ed with the ECOTAP\u00ae<\/sup> VPD\u00ae<\/sup> and I expect it to be the same with the VACUTAP\u00ae<\/sup> VI,\u201d says Kris\u00adtensen. In any case, he has no real choice\u2013Magtech\u2019s cus\u00adtomers want noth\u00ading oth\u00ader than MR tech\u00adnol\u00ado\u00adgy. \u201cI am delight\u00aded that the fact that we can build MV con\u00adtrollers of up to 10 MVA has opened up a new mar\u00adket for us, espe\u00adcial\u00adly in the Nordic coun\u00adtries.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n
