When hun\u00addreds of incan\u00addes\u00adcent light bulbs illu\u00admi\u00adnat\u00aded the Palais de l\u2019Industrie at the \u201cFirst Inter\u00adna\u00adtion\u00adal Elec\u00adtric\u00adi\u00adty Exhi\u00adbi\u00adtion\u201d in Paris in 1881, it caused a sen\u00adsa\u00adtion: nev\u00ader before had a build\u00ading in Europe been so bright\u00adly lit! The exhi\u00adbi\u00adtion gave elec\u00adtri\ufb01\u00adca\u00adtion an enor\u00admous boost and helped to spread the then\u2013new tech\u00adnol\u00ado\u00adgy around the globe\u2013albeit not every\u00adwhere at the same pace. After the First World War, ener\u00adgy demand rose sharply\u2013factories were con\u00advert\u00aded and, increas\u00ading\u00adly, machines were no longer pow\u00adered by steam and coal, but by elec\u00adtric motors. But even in major cities such as Paris, Berlin, Lon\u00addon, and New York, where street\u00adlights illu\u00admi\u00adnat\u00aded the boule\u00advards at night and elec\u00adtric trams rolled along the tracks, not every res\u00adi\u00addent had access to elec\u00adtric\u00adi\u00adty at the begin\u00adning of the 1920s. The coun\u00adtry\u00adside was par\u00adtic\u00adu\u00adlar\u00adly dark at night\u2013in many places, elec\u00adtric\u00adi\u00adty had not yet arrived. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

In order to sup\u00adply more peo\u00adple with elec\u00adtric\u00adi\u00adty and meet the grow\u00ading demand from indus\u00adtry, com\u00adpre\u00adhen\u00adsive pow\u00ader grids were urgent\u00adly need\u00aded. How\u00adev\u00ader, there was a lack of stan\u00addards and norms to accel\u00ader\u00adate expan\u00adsion. And the exchange of knowl\u00adedge among experts was also patchy. A group of engi\u00adneers decid\u00aded to change that. In Novem\u00adber 1921\u201340 years after the mem\u00ado\u00adrable exhi\u00adbi\u00adtion and also in Paris\u2013they found\u00aded the Con\u00adseil Inter\u00adna\u00adtion\u00adal des Grands R\u00e9seaux \u00c9lec\u00adtriques (Inter\u00adna\u00adtion\u00adal Coun\u00adcil on Large Elec\u00adtric Sys\u00adtems), or CIGRE for short. The aim of this non-pro\ufb01t orga\u00adni\u00adza\u00adtion was, and still is today, to pro\u00admote the inter\u00adna\u00adtion\u00adal exchange of knowl\u00adedge between experts from indus\u00adtry, researchers, and ener\u00adgy sup\u00adpli\u00aders, there\u00adby enabling the safe and reli\u00adable expan\u00adsion of high-volt\u00adage elec\u00adtri\u00adcal net\u00adworks world\u00adwide. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

From the out\u00adset, tech\u00adni\u00adcal, eco\u00adnom\u00adic, and indus\u00adtri\u00adal issues were to be tak\u00aden into account, as were the social impli\u00adca\u00adtions of elec\u00adtri\ufb01\u00adca\u00adtion. To this day, CIGRE con\u00adtin\u00adues to make sig\u00adni\ufb01\u00adcant con\u00adtri\u00adbu\u00adtions to the expan\u00adsion of a safe and eco\u00adnom\u00adi\u00adcal sup\u00adply of elec\u00adtri\u00adcal ener\u00adgy to the world\u2019s pop\u00adu\u00adla\u00adtion and has devel\u00adoped many prin\u00adci\u00adples and tech\u00adni\u00adcal rec\u00adom\u00admen\u00adda\u00adtions that have been incor\u00adpo\u00adrat\u00aded into inter\u00adna\u00adtion\u00adal stan\u00addards, for exam\u00adple by the Inter\u00adna\u00adtion\u00adal Elec\u00adtrotech\u00adni\u00adcal Com\u00admis\u00adsion (IEC). <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The inven\u00adtion of the on-load tap-chang\u00ader by engi\u00adneer Dr. Bern\u00adhard Jansen\u2013or, more pre\u00adcise\u00adly, the pub\u00adli\u00adca\u00adtion of the patent for the so-called high-speed resis\u00adtor-type tap-changer\u2013just \ufb01ve years after CIGRE was found\u00aded was, in ret\u00adro\u00adspect, a rev\u00ado\u00adlu\u00adtion for the ener\u00adgy world. The prin\u00adci\u00adple made it pos\u00adsi\u00adble for the \ufb01rst time to reg\u00adu\u00adlate trans\u00adform\u00aders under load. This made it fea\u00adsi\u00adble to imple\u00adment even com\u00adplex grid infra\u00adstruc\u00adtures and to con\u00adnect for\u00admer\u00adly iso\u00adlat\u00aded sup\u00adply net\u00adworks with each oth\u00ader. This was an impor\u00adtant pre\u00adreq\u00adui\u00adsite for bring\u00ading elec\u00adtri\ufb01\u00adca\u00adtion to the wider pop\u00adu\u00adla\u00adtion. This was a con\u00adcern that was impor\u00adtant to the founders of CIGRE. Although the orga\u00adni\u00adza\u00adtion did not play a direct role in this inge\u00adnious inven\u00adtion, it lat\u00ader made a deci\u00adsive con\u00adtri\u00adbu\u00adtion to pro\u00admot\u00ading the use and fur\u00adther devel\u00adop\u00adment of load tap chang\u00ader tech\u00adnol\u00ado\u00adgy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A shared success story<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Maschi\u00adnen\u00adfab\u00adrik Rein\u00adhausen has not only ren\u00addered a great ser\u00advice to the ener\u00adgy world with its load tap chang\u00ader, but also with the expert knowl\u00adedge it has con\u00adtributed to CIGRE study com\u00admit\u00adtees and work\u00ading groups for decades. It is very impor\u00adtant for CIGRE that com\u00adpa\u00adnies such as Maschi\u00adnen\u00adfab\u00adrik Rein\u00adhausen share their knowl\u00adedge and best prac\u00adtices. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Experts have made a deci\u00adsive con\u00adtri\u00adbu\u00adtion to the so-called Study Com\u00admit\u00adtee A2, which deals with pow\u00ader trans\u00adform\u00aders and reac\u00adtors. The aim is to improve knowl\u00adedge about the com\u00adpo\u00adnents through\u00adout their entire life cycle\u2013from design and man\u00adu\u00adfac\u00adture to test\u00ading, oper\u00ada\u00adtion, main\u00adte\u00adnance, life cycle assess\u00adment, and dis\u00adpos\u00adal. The experts in this \ufb01eld pro\u00advide impor\u00adtant impe\u00adtus, for exam\u00adple for the improve\u00adment of oper\u00adat\u00ading and main\u00adte\u00adnance strate\u00adgies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In Study Com\u00admit\u00adtee D1, which deals with the sub\u00adject area of \u201cMate\u00adri\u00adals and nov\u00adel test\u00ading tech\u00adniques,\u201d experts are work\u00ading to devel\u00adop stan\u00addards for new insu\u00adla\u00adtion mate\u00adri\u00adals and test\u00ading tech\u00adniques that ensure the safe and sus\u00adtain\u00adable oper\u00ada\u00adtion of elec\u00adtri\u00adcal pow\u00ader sys\u00adtems. These are all aspects that are impor\u00adtant for a reli\u00adable and sus\u00adtain\u00adable pow\u00ader sup\u00adply.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A new era begins<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

I have been per\u00adson\u00adal\u00adly involved with CIGRE since 2006, when I began work\u00ading in the \ufb01rst work\u00ading groups. It is there\u00adfore a great hon\u00ador for me that, since August 2024, I have been able to com\u00admit myself even more strong\u00adly to the goals of this glob\u00adal, non-pro\ufb01t orga\u00adni\u00adza\u00adtion as CIGRE Vice Pres\u00adi\u00addent Tech\u00adni\u00adcal. In my opin\u00adion, these goals are more impor\u00adtant today than ever before. As at the begin\u00adning of the 1920s, we are cur\u00adrent\u00adly fac\u00ading enor\u00admous chal\u00adlenges once again. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The ener\u00adgy world is under\u00adgo\u00ading fun\u00adda\u00admen\u00adtal change: the ener\u00adgy tran\u00adsi\u00adtion is plac\u00ading unprece\u00addent\u00aded demands on our grids. Added to this is dig\u00adi\u00adtal\u00adi\u00adsa\u00adtion, with more and more data cen\u00adters whose gigan\u00adtic com\u00adput\u00ading pow\u00ader requires enor\u00admous amounts of elec\u00adtric\u00adi\u00adty, as well as the elec\u00adtri\ufb01\u00adca\u00adtion of new sec\u00adtors such as mobil\u00adi\u00adty and heat\u00ading. At the same time, we are deal\u00ading with aging pow\u00ader grids, some of which date back to the 1950s. And even though we now take it for grant\u00aded that we can turn on the lights at the touch of a but\u00adton, accord\u00ading to the Inter\u00adna\u00adtion\u00adal Ener\u00adgy Agency, around 745 mil\u00adlion peo\u00adple world\u00adwide still have no access to elec\u00adtric\u00adi\u00adty. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the \u201cCIGRE Strat\u00ade\u00adgy Plan\u2013Horizon 2030: Enter\u00ading Our Sec\u00adond Cen\u00adtu\u00adry with Renewed Vision,\u201d we set out our vision of how we want to active\u00adly shape the glob\u00adal ener\u00adgy tran\u00adsi\u00adtion. Over the last hun\u00addred years, the focus has been pri\u00admar\u00adi\u00adly on secu\u00adri\u00adty of sup\u00adply and stan\u00addard\u00adiza\u00adtion of tech\u00adnol\u00ado\u00adgy. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Now the ques\u00adtion is how to suc\u00adcess\u00adful\u00adly trans\u00adform tra\u00addi\u00adtion\u00adal pow\u00ader grids into \ufb02ex\u00adi\u00adble, decen\u00adtral\u00adized, dig\u00adi\u00adtal, and sus\u00adtain\u00adable ener\u00adgy sys\u00adtems. To achieve this, we con\u00adtin\u00adue to need inter\u00adna\u00adtion\u00adal experts from the \ufb01eld of research, the prac\u00adti\u00adcal knowl\u00adedge of ener\u00adgy sup\u00adpli\u00aders, and the exper\u00adtise of com\u00adpa\u00adnies such as MR. After all, the devel\u00adop\u00adment of prod\u00aducts such as the on-load tap-chang\u00ader was and still is of great impor\u00adtance for the ener\u00adgy sys\u00adtem of the future.
