In the world\u2019s first closed-loop geot\u00adher\u00admal pow\u00ader plant, water cir\u00adcu\u00adlates through a com\u00adplex tun\u00adnel sys\u00adtem at a depth of more than four kilo\u00adme\u00adters, where it absorbs heat from the sur\u00adround\u00ading rock. Back at the sur\u00adface, it can be fed into the dis\u00adtrict heat\u00ading net\u00adwork or used to gen\u00ader\u00adate elec\u00adtric\u00adi\u00adty. The approach does not require ther\u00admal water, mak\u00ading it loca\u00adtion-inde\u00adpen\u00addent and flex\u00adi\u00adble in its appli\u00adca\u00adtion.
