In a large, dense\u00adly pop\u00adu\u00adlat\u00aded, and indus\u00adtri\u00adal city like Duis\u00adburg, this is a com\u00adplex task. Added to this are ever-chang\u00ading demands from the grid itself. With the ener\u00adgy tran\u00adsi\u00adtion, the num\u00adber of decen\u00adtral\u00adized pow\u00ader sources is ris\u00ading, and these sources are also volatile\u200a \u2013 some\u00adtimes feed\u00ading in a lot, some\u00adtimes noth\u00ading at all. The need for greater oper\u00ada\u00adtional reli\u00ada\u00adbil\u00adi\u00adty and intel\u00adli\u00adgent grid man\u00adage\u00adment is grow\u00ading, but the tech\u00adnol\u00ado\u00adgy in sub\u00adsta\u00adtions or gas trans\u00adfer sta\u00adtions must first make this pos\u00adsi\u00adble; at the same time there is a short\u00adage of skilled work\u00aders. \u201cTo over\u00adcome these chal\u00adlenges, we need to posi\u00adtion our\u00adselves to be cri\u00adsis-proof in many areas,\u201d says Michael Har\u00ading, Head of Oper\u00ada\u00adtions Engi\u00adneer\u00ading at Net\u00adze Duis\u00adburg. He over\u00adsees the elec\u00adtri\u00adcal sys\u00adtems for gas, water, elec\u00adtric\u00adi\u00adty, and dis\u00adtrict heat\u00ading. \u201cWe main\u00adtain a total of 26 facil\u00adi\u00adties and approx\u00adi\u00admate\u00adly 5,000 kilo\u00adme\u00adters of medi\u00adum-volt\u00adage lines.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Power outage, backup power solution on<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Cri\u00adsis resilience means, first and fore\u00admost, that Net\u00adze Duisburg\u2019s crit\u00adi\u00adcal infra\u00adstruc\u00adture can con\u00adtin\u00adue to oper\u00adate inde\u00adpen\u00addent\u00adly in the event of a black\u00adout. \u201cWhether it\u2019s hos\u00adpi\u00adtals, super\u00admar\u00adkets, indus\u00adtry, or drink\u00ading water at home\u200a \u2013 \u200athe emer\u00adgency sup\u00adply ensures that life can con\u00adtin\u00adue as usu\u00adal for the time being.\u201d Here, Har\u00ading relies on back\u00adup pow\u00ader solu\u00adtions that seam\u00adless\u00adly step in to pro\u00advide gas and water in the event of a pow\u00ader out\u00adage. In many parts of Duis\u00adburg, diesel gen\u00ader\u00ada\u00adtors and lead-acid bat\u00adter\u00adies are still used for this pur\u00adpose. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

At trans\u00adfer sta\u00adtions, these ensure the gas sup\u00adply by keep\u00ading the sys\u00adtems oper\u00ada\u00adtional and con\u00adtrol\u00adlable until pow\u00ader is restored. But the back\u00adup solu\u00adtion is also essen\u00adtial for ensur\u00ading that the pow\u00ader sup\u00adply can be restored at all: When the grid is restart\u00aded, loads must be con\u00adnect\u00aded to sub\u00adsta\u00adtions in a tar\u00adget\u00aded and grad\u00adual man\u00adner, because oth\u00ader\u00adwise it could col\u00adlapse again imme\u00addi\u00adate\u00adly due to high inrush cur\u00adrents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Reinhausen\u2019s pow\u00ader qual\u00adi\u00adty experts con\u00adduct\u00aded train\u00ading ses\u00adsions on the new sys\u00adtems. After all, exper\u00adtise in one\u2019s own sys\u00adtems is an essen\u00adtial part of cri\u00adsis pre\u00adpared\u00adness.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

Switching to the future<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

But with the gen\u00ader\u00ada\u00adtors and lead-acid bat\u00adter\u00adies that Net\u00adze Duis\u00adburg has relied on so far, Har\u00ading and his team are increas\u00ading\u00adly reach\u00ading their lim\u00adits. While the old sys\u00adtems are proven, they are no longer suf\u00adfi\u00adcient for today\u2019s chal\u00adlenges, explains Har\u00ading: \u201cLabor costs are high because diesel fuel degrades over time and must there\u00adfore be replaced reg\u00adu\u00adlar\u00adly. The lead-acid bat\u00adter\u00adies also require exten\u00adsive safe\u00adty mea\u00adsures.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Oper\u00ada\u00adtional reli\u00ada\u00adbil\u00adi\u00adty also needs to be improved: \u201cThe back\u00adup pow\u00ader solu\u00adtion only kicks in dur\u00ading a com\u00adplete grid out\u00adage, but even a par\u00adtial fail\u00adure can cause the sys\u00adtem to run unsta\u00adbly. The gen\u00ader\u00ada\u00adtors then need 70 sec\u00adonds to start up and syn\u00adchro\u00adnize. That\u2019s too long\u200a \u2013 \u200ain both cas\u00ades, we want to react faster. Self-suf\u00adfi\u00adcien\u00adcy was also lim\u00adit\u00aded to just ten hours, but our goal is 72.\u201d Michael Har\u00ading there\u00adfore select\u00aded a gas trans\u00adfer sta\u00adtion as a pilot project to test a new solu\u00adtion that is also suit\u00adable for sub\u00adsta\u00adtions. The task: to define, for the first time, a new back\u00adup pow\u00ader solu\u00adtion that is fast, dig\u00adi\u00adtal, and future-proof<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Established and reliable<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Timo Kahl is respon\u00adsi\u00adble for elec\u00adtri\u00adcal sys\u00adtems in the gas and water sec\u00adtor with\u00adin Haring\u2019s depart\u00adment. There\u00adfore, the mod\u00adern\u00adiza\u00adtion of the gas trans\u00adfer sta\u00adtion fell under his purview. \u201cWe were look\u00ading for a tech\u00adni\u00adcal\u00adly flaw\u00adless sys\u00adtem con\u00adsist\u00ading of bat\u00adtery stor\u00adage and an invert\u00ader, but also for a part\u00adner we trust who would sup\u00adport us in a solu\u00adtion-ori\u00adent\u00aded and prac\u00adti\u00adcal way,\u201d explains Kahl. He opt\u00aded for nick\u00adel-man\u00adganese-cobalt bat\u00adter\u00adies: \u201cCom\u00adpared to oth\u00ader sys\u00adtems, they are more space-effi\u00adcient and have a longer ser\u00advice life.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The con\u00adver\u00adsion at the gas trans\u00adfer sta\u00adtion was then com\u00adplet\u00aded quick\u00adly with\u00adin a week. And as an added bonus, the new solu\u00adtion sig\u00adnif\u00adi\u00adcant\u00adly reduces the envi\u00adron\u00admen\u00adtal foot\u00adprint com\u00adpared to the old diesel sys\u00adtem. \u201cThis helps us enor\u00admous\u00adly in achiev\u00ading our sus\u00adtain\u00adabil\u00adi\u00adty goals.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The fit between Net\u00adze Duis\u00adburg and Rein\u00adhausen was also a good one on a per\u00adson\u00adal lev\u00adel.
