They are work\u00ading in a pri\u00adma\u00adry sub\u00adsta\u00adtion of the nation\u00adal net\u00adwork oper\u00ada\u00adtor Trans\u00adpow\u00ader in the mild cli\u00admate of New Zealand\u2019s cap\u00adi\u00adtal, Welling\u00adton. At oth\u00ader times, the two ser\u00advice spe\u00adcial\u00adists han\u00addle the main\u00adte\u00adnance of on-load tap-chang\u00aders in the tor\u00adrid heat of the Aus\u00adtralian Out\u00adback, where the ther- mome\u00adter has been known to read 60 degrees Cel\u00adsius. Then, on oth\u00ader days, they work in regions with the same lev\u00adel of swel\u00adter\u00ading heat: in Papua New Guinea, Van\u00adu\u00adatu, New Cale\u00addo\u00adnia or Tahi\u00adti. In total, five ser\u00advice tech\u00adni\u00adcians at Rein\u00adhausen Aus\u00adtralia ser\u00advice this giant area of oper\u00ada\u00adtion with eight dif\u00adfer\u00adent time zones. \u201cWe are on site with the cus-tomer for about three weeks of each month,\u201d says Alan.

PREMIUM SERVICE PROVIDERS IN ACTION<\/h2>\n

The father-son team has three days to com\u00adplete the work in Welling\u00adton. For nor\u00admal main\u00adte\u00adnance work this would be a con\u00adsid\u00adered a gen\u00ader\u00adous time\u00adframe, but this job is more com\u00adplex: they have to con\u00adduct a rebuild of three sin\u00adgle-phase on-load tap-chang\u00aders in the three trans\u00adform\u00aders of the pri\u00adma\u00adry sub\u00adsta\u00adtion. There\u00adfore, two ser\u00advice tech\u00adni\u00adcians work\u00ading simul\u00adta\u00adne\u00adous\u00adly are need\u00aded to com\u00adplete the job on time. \u201cMany cus\u00adtomers require short down times dur\u00ading main\u00adte\u00adnance work\u201d says 22-year-old Grant. He has been work\u00ading with Rein\u00adhausen Aus\u00adtralia for five years, becom\u00ading cer\u00adti\u00adfied as a Pre\u00admi\u00adum Ser\u00advice Provider after a four-week train\u00ading course in Regens\u00adburg in 2016.<\/p>\n

His father Alan is an old hand in the ser\u00advice busi\u00adness. He has spe\u00adcial\u00adized in main\u00adte\u00adnance and repair work, retro\u00adfitting as well as diag\u00adnos\u00adtics and analy\u00adsis of trans\u00adform\u00aders with Rein\u00adhausen Aus\u00adtralia for 18 years. \u201cTrans\u00adpow\u00ader noticed some anom\u00adalies in a mea\u00adsure\u00adment on the trans\u00adform\u00aders. We car\u00adried out an inspec\u00adtion, but couldn\u2019t find any irreg\u00adu\u00adlar\u00adi\u00adties. Nonethe\u00adless, we rec\u00adom\u00admend\u00aded that the on-load tap-chang\u00aders and the motor-dri\u00adve units be refur\u00adbished and brought up-to-date since they had been in con\u00adtin\u00adu\u00adous oper\u00ada\u00adtion since 1975,\u201d says Alan.<\/p>\n

Grant sum\u00adma\u00adrizes the process: \u201cThe three trans\u00adform\u00aders each con\u00adtain an old\u00ader style M\u2011type on-load tap-chang\u00ader which we need to rebuild and bring up to mod\u00adern stan\u00addards. For this process, we must com\u00adplete\u00adly dis\u00adman\u00adtle the divert\u00ader switch units into all indi\u00advid\u00adual parts and then clean and inspect all mechan\u00adi\u00adcal and insu\u00adlat\u00ading com\u00adpo\u00adnents such as the tran\u00adsi\u00adtion resis\u00adtors. For this job, we will be installing a new ener\u00adgy accu\u00admu\u00adla\u00adtor sys\u00adtem and exchang\u00ading con\u00adtacts and oth\u00ader crit\u00adi\u00adcal com\u00adpo\u00adnents and then rebuild\u00ading the divert\u00ader-switch unit. When that\u2019s done, main\u00adte\u00adnance for the motor-dri\u00adve unit and the dri\u00adve shafts are next in line.\u201d Some 40 kilo\u00adgrams of spare parts per on-load tap-chang\u00ader were shipped to Welling\u00adton in advance for this pur\u00adpose.<\/p>\n

The young tech\u00adni\u00adcian has already neat\u00adly laid out the tap-chang\u00ader com\u00adpo\u00adnents on a work\u00adbench togeth\u00ader with the oil com\u00adpart\u00adment. He care\u00adful\u00adly replaces the cop\u00adper con\u00adtacts and exchanges the old flex\u00adi\u00adble leads with new ones. This is work that requires a fine touch. \u201cIt feels like there are a mil\u00adlion parts in front of you, but there is a check\u00adlist process that helps make sure you don\u2019t for\u00adget any\u00adthing. The tap chang\u00ader is a high-risk com\u00adpo\u00adnent. If it doesn\u2019t func\u00adtion, the trans\u00adformer doesn\u2019t either,\u201d says Alan, who is now mon\u00adi\u00adtor\u00ading the removal of the divert\u00ader-switch insert from the oil com\u00adpart\u00adment of the next trans\u00adformer. \u201cThere is a great deal of respon\u00adsi\u00adbil\u00adi\u00adty with this work. But when the over\u00adhauled trans\u00adformer is switched back on and func\u00adtions, you know you\u2019ve done your job right,\u201d explains the expe\u00adri\u00adenced ser\u00advice tech\u00adni\u00adcian.<\/p>\n

NO FEAR OF ERRORS<\/h2>\n

Nei\u00adther of the two expe\u00adri\u00adences ner\u00advous\u00adness or fear of errors. \u201cThey sim\u00adply don\u2019t arise, thanks to thor\u00adough, con\u00adtin\u00adu\u00adous train\u00ading where what we learn becomes ingrained in us. You have your own rou\u00adtine and you know you\u2019ve checked every\u00adthing,\u201d says Grant. It is not often that father and son are on the same assign\u00adment since ser\u00advice tech\u00adni\u00adcians are often on site alone. They are only paired up when the job is espe\u00adcial\u00adly exten\u00adsive. \u201cI see an enor\u00admous ben\u00ade\u00adfit from such assign\u00adments,\u201d says Grant, \u201cExpe\u00adri\u00adence is very impor\u00adtant in this job.\u201d<\/p>\n

On the last work day, Grant, secured by a har\u00adness and firm\u00adly foot\u00aded on top of the trans\u00adformer \u2013 assists and mon\u00adi\u00adtors to ensure that the last of the three refur\u00adbished divert\u00ader-switch inserts is low\u00adered into the trans\u00adformer cor\u00adrect\u00adly. The tech\u00adni\u00adcians refur\u00adbish and main\u00adtain the motor-dri\u00adve units and the dri\u00adve shaft on the final day as well. The last screw has been put into place mere moments before Alan cranks the con\u00adnec\u00adtion between the dri\u00adve unit and the tap chang\u00aders on each trans\u00adformer in order to syn\u00adchro\u00adnize them so that there is less than a hand crank turn between them.<\/p>\n

After\u00adwards, he con\u00adducts yet anoth\u00ader mechan\u00adi\u00adcal test which runs through all 13 posi\u00adtions. \u201cAll done,\u201d says Alan to Grant, as the young tech\u00adni\u00adcian packs up his equip\u00adment. Father and son are already look\u00ading for\u00adward to a relax\u00ading week\u00adend in Syd\u00adney. On Mon\u00adday, the two have more work wait\u00ading for them.
