This breeze is enough to set in motion the huge rotor blades of the six wind tur\u00adbines oper\u00adat\u00aded by region\u00adal ener\u00adgy sup\u00adpli\u00ader EnergieS\u00fcdp\u00adfalz GmbH &amp; Co. KG. They rotate cease\u00adless\u00adly \u2013 and every rota\u00adtion pro\u00adduces envi\u00adron\u00admen\u00adtal\u00adly friend\u00adly pow\u00ader. Each year, this amounts to a total of 40 mil\u00adlion kilo\u00adwatt-hours for 13,800 house\u00adholds, and the wind farm has a total out\u00adput of 15.8 megawatts. There are thou\u00adsands of pow\u00ader plants just like this one across the globe. But a small con\u00adcrete struc\u00adture at the foot of the over one-hun\u00addred-meter-high wind tur\u00adbines turns the Offen\u00adbach wind farm into some\u00adthing spe\u00adcial: The lit\u00adtle build\u00ading con\u00adtains the first high-fre\u00adquen\u00adcy fil\u00adter sys\u00adtem from MR, which ensures dis\u00adrup\u00adtion-free grids at fre\u00adquen\u00adcies up to 9 kHz.<\/p>\n<h2>The backstory<\/h2>\n<p>This is nec\u00ades\u00adsary because, although pow\u00ader from renew\u00adable ener\u00adgy sources is envi\u00adron\u00admen\u00adtal\u00adly friend\u00adly, in con\u00adtrast to con\u00adven\u00adtion\u00adal pow\u00ader sta\u00adtions, it is dif\u00adfi\u00adcult to keep the grid fre\u00adquen\u00adcy in wind pow\u00ader plants at a sta\u00adble lev\u00adel. The rotors turn faster or slow\u00ader depend\u00ading on the strength of the wind, caus\u00ading the amount of pow\u00ader gen\u00ader\u00adat\u00aded to vary. In order to bal\u00adance out these fluc\u00adtu\u00ada\u00adtions, rec\u00adti\u00adfi\u00ader trans\u00adform\u00aders with what are known as IGBTs (insu\u00adlat\u00aded gate bipo\u00adlar tran\u00adsis\u00adtors) are brought into play in mod\u00adern wind pow\u00ader plants. This was exact\u00adly the prob\u00adlem that EnergieS\u00fcdp\u00adfalz and project devel\u00adop\u00ader juwi Wind GmbH were faced with: The elec\u00adtric\u00adi\u00adty gen\u00ader\u00adat\u00aded by the wind tur\u00adbines exceed\u00aded the lim\u00adit val\u00adues for har\u00admon\u00adics at fre\u00adquen\u00adcies up to 9 kHz. That being the case, the two part\u00adners turned to the Pow\u00ader Qual\u00adi\u00adty experts at MR for advice. \u201cHar\u00admon\u00adics per se are not unusu\u00adal and can be dealt with using pas\u00adsive fil\u00adter sys\u00adtems. We already have many years of expe\u00adri\u00adence in this field. But nor\u00admal\u00adly we would be deal\u00ading with fre\u00adquen\u00adcy ranges up to 2.5 kHz,\u201d explains Dr. Thomas Schlegel, Head of Engi\u00adneer\u00ading in the Pow\u00ader Qual\u00adi\u00adty depart\u00adment.<\/p>\n<h2>The filter concept<\/h2>\n<p>Schlegel and his team accept\u00aded the chal\u00adlenge and start\u00aded on the devel\u00adop\u00adment of a suit\u00adable fil\u00adter con\u00adcept. The aim was to drop the har\u00admon\u00adic lev\u00adel in the fre\u00adquen\u00adcy range up to 9 kHz over a broad spec\u00adtrum, while also sig\u00adnif\u00adi\u00adcant\u00adly reduc\u00ading indi\u00advid\u00adual har\u00admon\u00adic fre\u00adquen\u00adcies. The experts start\u00aded by tak\u00ading com\u00adpre\u00adhen\u00adsive mea\u00adsure\u00adments at the wind farm before com\u00adbin\u00ading them with a math\u00ade\u00admat\u00adi\u00adcal sim\u00adu\u00adla\u00adtion. \u201cWe can only come to an opti\u00admum solu\u00adtion if we link our mod\u00adels to real mea\u00adsured val\u00adues,\u201d states Schlegel. A pas\u00adsive har\u00admon\u00adic fil\u00adter sys\u00adtem is always made up of the same com\u00adpo\u00adnents. These include reac\u00adtors, capac\u00adi\u00adtors, cir\u00adcuit break\u00aders, and volt\u00adage trans\u00adform\u00aders.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cWe aim to pro\u00advide our cus\u00adtomers with com\u00adpre\u00adhen\u00adsive solu\u00adtion con\u00adcepts. In the end, every fil\u00adter cir\u00adcuit sys\u00adtem is dif\u00adfer\u00adent, as it is always pre\u00adcise\u00adly tai\u00adlored to the con\u00addi\u00adtions on site. The grid struc\u00adture plays a role here \u2013 but so too do many oth\u00ader para\u00adme\u00adters.\u201d The solu\u00adtion turned out to be a con\u00adcept involv\u00ading three fil\u00adter cir\u00adcuits with tun\u00ading fre\u00adquen\u00adcies of 189\/3800\/5600 Hz and a total out\u00adput of 2800 kvar. The Pow\u00ader Qual\u00adi\u00adty experts also com\u00adplet\u00aded the instal\u00adla\u00adtion on site. \u201cWe aim to pro\u00advide our cus\u00adtomers with com\u00adpre\u00adhen\u00adsive solu\u00adtion con\u00adcepts. Con\u00adfor\u00admi\u00adty tests con\u00adfirmed the per\u00adfor\u00admance of the sys\u00adtem in oper\u00ada\u00adtion.
