The pow\u00ader grid is down. The roads are in a state of grid\u00adlock because traf\u00adfic lights have switched off. The water sup\u00adply has been dis\u00adabled because the pumps are no longer run\u00adning. Gaso\u00adline pumps stop dis\u00adpens\u00ading fuel and, after a day goes by, emer\u00adgency pow\u00ader sys\u00adtems in hos\u00adpi\u00adtals begin to fail. Because fuel assem\u00adbly cool\u00ading in nuclear pow\u00ader plants also requires elec\u00adtric\u00adi\u00adty, the threat of nuclear dis\u00adas\u00adter looms.<\/p>\n<p>Such night\u00admare sce\u00adnar\u00adios attract a great deal of atten\u00adtion among the pub\u00adlic at large. But it\u2019s not always absolute cat\u00ada\u00adstro\u00adphes that war\u00adrant con\u00adcern. For many indus\u00adtri\u00adal com\u00adpa\u00adnies, every\u00adday fluc\u00adtu\u00ada\u00adtions in volt\u00adage are trou\u00adble enough\u2014especially when they cause pro\u00adduc\u00adtion down\u00adtime or even dam\u00adage to elec\u00adtri\u00adcal sys\u00adtems and pro\u00adduc\u00adtion facil\u00adi\u00adties. Volt\u00adage fluc\u00adtu\u00ada\u00adtions are a glob\u00adal phe\u00adnom\u00ade\u00adnon and are not con\u00adfined to the \u201cweak\u00ader\u201d grids of devel\u00adop\u00ading nations. Even high\u00adly devel\u00adoped grids in indus\u00adtri\u00adal\u00adized coun\u00adtries suf\u00adfer from a grow\u00ading lev\u00adel of volatil\u00adi\u00adty. The main cul\u00adprit of these fluc\u00adtu\u00ada\u00adtions in line volt\u00adage is renew\u00adable ener\u00adgy.<\/p>\n\n<p>The wind doesn\u2019t always blow at the same strength and cloudy weath\u00ader ensures a con\u00adstant\u00adly vary\u00ading elec\u00adtric\u00adi\u00adty stream from solar instal\u00adla\u00adtions. And if major con\u00adsumers of elec\u00adtric\u00adi\u00adty like alu\u00admini\u00adum plants start up the smelters, the volt\u00adage drops and can only be com\u00adpen\u00adsat\u00aded by increas\u00ading the pow\u00ader in-feed. Anoth\u00ader prob\u00adlem is that mon\u00adi\u00adtor\u00ading of pow\u00ader grids is only orga\u00adnized at the medi\u00adum-volt\u00adage lev\u00adel. If fluc\u00adtu\u00ada\u00adtions occur in these volt\u00adage ranges, pri\u00adma\u00adry sub\u00adsta\u00adtions step in to mit\u00adi\u00adgate the effects. Fluc\u00adtu\u00ada\u00adtions at the low-volt\u00adage lev\u00adel, how\u00adev\u00ader, often go unno\u00adticed by util\u00adi\u00adty providers because there is no mon\u00adi\u00adtor\u00ading sys\u00adtem in place.<\/p>\n<div class=\"wpcmsdev-box\">\n<div class=\"box-content\">\n<h5>Example RWE<\/h5>\n<hr class=\"yellow\">\n<p>At the Ham\u00adbach sur\u00adface mine in Ger\u00admany, <strong>RWE<\/strong> oper\u00adates a 400 kW dewa\u00adter\u00ading pump so that the base struts of the lig\u00adnite exca\u00adva\u00adtor keep dry. Switch\u00ading oper\u00ada\u00adtions and changes in load have a neg\u00ada\u00adtive impact on the 6 kV grid. This is now kept in check by the experts at RWE with the help of Reinhausen\u2019s ECOTAP<sup>\u00ae<\/sup> VPD<sup>\u00ae<\/sup>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<h2>RELIABILITY FOR INDUSTRIAL OPERATIONS<\/h2>\n<p>At the same time, elec\u00adtron\u00adic con\u00adtrol sys\u00adtems used in plants and machines are becom\u00ading more and more sen\u00adsi\u00adtive to these fluc\u00adtu\u00ada\u00adtions. The abil\u00adi\u00adty of indus\u00adtri\u00adal com\u00adpa\u00adnies to run effi\u00adcient\u00adly and reli\u00adably is there\u00adfore increas\u00ading\u00adly depen\u00addent on the adher\u00adence to a defined volt\u00adage range. Any devi\u00ada\u00adtions from this range are guar\u00adan\u00adteed to cause inter\u00adrup\u00adtions in pro\u00adduc\u00adtion process\u00ades. Even if the devi\u00ada\u00adtions last only a frac\u00adtion of a sec\u00adond, they can cause sen\u00adsi\u00adtive fre\u00adquen\u00adcy con\u00advert\u00aders in many machines to shut down, requir\u00ading oper\u00ada\u00adtors to start them up again. If volt\u00adages stray out\u00adside of the spec\u00adi\u00adfied range for an extend\u00aded peri\u00adod of time, the dam\u00adage becomes even more severe due to the cor\u00adre\u00adspond\u00ading\u00adly lengthy down\u00adtime peri\u00adods, which affect glass and steel works in par\u00adtic\u00adu\u00adlar.<\/p>\n<p>Con\u00adsumers of elec\u00adtric\u00adi\u00adty from the pow\u00ader grid are usu\u00adal\u00adly able to con\u00adnect and oper\u00adate vir\u00adtu\u00adal\u00adly any num\u00adber of devices and instal\u00adla\u00adtions to the net\u00adwork with\u00adout con\u00adsult\u00ading the grid oper\u00ada\u00adtor, and at best this means that oper\u00ada\u00adtors can only keep the qual\u00adi\u00adty of the sup\u00adply volt\u00adage under con\u00adtrol with\u00adin a sta\u00adtis\u00adti\u00adcal frame\u00adwork.<\/p>\n<p>Mod\u00adern pow\u00ader grids may only present a low risk of equip\u00adment drop\u00adping out, but the empha\u00adsis is on the word \u201clow\u201d. The ques\u00adtion is not whether fluc\u00adtu\u00ada\u00adtions will cause inter\u00adrup\u00adtions in the pro\u00adduc\u00adtion process, but rather how seri\u00adous they will be when they do occur. If these tech\u00adni\u00adcal\u00adly unavoid\u00adable resid\u00adual risks are to be guard\u00aded against on a case-by-case basis, appro\u00adpri\u00adate mea\u00adsures must be intro\u00adduced direct\u00adly where they are need\u00aded. In this exam\u00adple, action would need to be tak\u00aden direct\u00adly in the sup\u00adply sys\u00adtem for the pro\u00adduc\u00adtion facil\u00adi\u00adties at the com\u00adpa\u00adny itself. (\u00a9 Thomas Ab\u00e9)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2>BUILDING A SECURE INTERNAL GRID<\/h2>\n<p>This is exact\u00adly the action tak\u00aden over the last year by the ger\u00adman com\u00adpa\u00adny S\u00e4ch\u00adsisch-Bay\u00aderische Stark\u00adstrom-Ger\u00e4te\u00adbau GmbH (SBG). In 2017, a sit\u00adu\u00ada\u00adtion arose in which the volt\u00adage lev\u00adel plum\u00admet\u00aded. Frank Tiep\u00adn\u00ader, respon\u00adsi\u00adble for over\u00adsee\u00ading pro\u00adduc\u00adtion engi\u00adneer\u00ading at SBG\u2014a lead\u00ading man\u00adu\u00adfac\u00adtur\u00ader of dis\u00adtri\u00adb\u00adu\u00adtion trans\u00adform\u00aders and spe\u00adcial machines\u2014explains how this prob\u00adlem led to a change in think\u00ading: \u201cWe were able to see that the volt\u00adage was fluc\u00adtu\u00adat\u00ading with\u00adin the spec\u00adi\u00adfied range from the read\u00adings we took over the years from the meters in the sub-dis\u00adtri\u00adb\u00adu\u00adtion units.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Machines were repeat\u00aded\u00adly break\u00ading down and, as he recounts, the rea\u00adson was not easy to iden\u00adti\u00adfy: \u201cIn this spe\u00adcif\u00adic case we were unable to estab\u00adlish whether the issue was being caused by volt\u00adage fluc\u00adtu\u00ada\u00adtions, a short-cir\u00adcuit in the grid, or anoth\u00ader pow\u00ader con\u00adsumer cre\u00adat\u00ading a prob\u00adlem in the grid. Nor\u00admal\u00adly, we were able to sim\u00adply start up the machine again and con\u00adtin\u00adue pro\u00adduc\u00adtion.\u201d How\u00adev\u00ader, in ear\u00adly 2017 some\u00adthing else hap\u00adpened.<\/p>\n<div class=\"wpcmsdev-box\">\n<div class=\"box-content\">\n<h5>EXAMPLE SBG<\/h5>\n<hr class=\"yellow\">\n<p><strong>SBG (S\u00e4ch\u00adsisch-Bay\u00aderische Stark\u00adstrom-Ger\u00e4te\u00adbau GmbH)<\/strong> pro\u00adtects the company\u2019s inter\u00adnal grid with three par\u00adal\u00adlel-con\u00adnect\u00aded, reg\u00adu\u00adlat\u00aded dis\u00adtri\u00adb\u00adu\u00adtion trans\u00adform\u00aders. Thanks to this solu\u00adtion, pro\u00adduc\u00adtion down\u00adtime caused by volt\u00adage fluc\u00adtu\u00ada\u00adtions is a thing of the past. Frank Tiep\u00adn\u00ader (right), head of pro\u00adduc\u00adtion engi\u00adneer\u00ading at SBG, puts safe\u00adguards for pro\u00adduc\u00adtion process\u00ades in place with the VRDT. Michael B\u00fch\u00adn\u00adert, head of sales in Ger\u00admany, ensures that SBG cus\u00adtomers ben\u00ade\u00adfit from the company\u2019s tech\u00adni\u00adcal exper\u00adtise.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>The ener\u00adgy sup\u00adpli\u00ader had car\u00adried out con\u00adstruc\u00adtion work on the grid, lead\u00ading to mas\u00adsive volt\u00adage dis\u00adrup\u00adtions. \u201cAt one point the volt\u00adage fell below 350 volts,\u201d explains Tiep\u00adn\u00ader, \u201cand we could do lit\u00adtle more than watch as one machine after the oth\u00ader broke down and brought arge sec\u00adtions of the pro\u00adduc\u00adtion line to a stand\u00adstill. That def\u00adi\u00adnite\u00adly served as a wake-up call. In a large com\u00adpa\u00adny like ours, these inci\u00addents war\u00adrant a prop\u00ader response. For this rea\u00adson, we explored the pos\u00adsi\u00adbil\u00adi\u00adty of guard\u00ading against such events by safe\u00adguard\u00ading our inter\u00adnal grid.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Tiep\u00adn\u00ader and his col\u00adleagues thus went in search of the most cost-effec\u00adtive solu\u00adtion. It soon became clear that only one solu\u00adtion would fit the bill: The three con\u00adven\u00adtion\u00adal dis\u00adtri\u00adb\u00adu\u00adtion trans\u00adform\u00aders, which were con\u00adnect\u00aded in par\u00adal\u00adlel and sup\u00adplied pow\u00ader to the company\u2019s inter\u00adnal grid, had to be removed. In their place, the job would be car\u00adried out by three volt\u00adage reg\u00adu\u00adlat\u00aded dis\u00adtri\u00adb\u00adu\u00adtion trans\u00adform\u00aders (VRDT) from SBG, fit\u00adted with ECOTAP\u00ae VPD\u00ae. \u201cWhen con\u00adsid\u00ader\u00ading our exist\u00ading infra\u00adstruc\u00adture, the SBG VRDT was by far the most cost-effec\u00adtive solu\u00adtion because the ECOTAP\u00ae VPD\u00ae allows us to install reg\u00adu\u00adlat\u00aded trans\u00adform\u00aders with exact\u00adly the same foot\u00adprint as the unreg\u00adu\u00adlat\u00aded ver\u00adsion. So in that sense it\u2019s almost a plug-and-play solu\u00adtion.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cAt one point the volt\u00adage fell below 350 volts, and we could do lit\u00adtle more than watch as one machine after the oth\u00ader broke down.\u201d<cite>Frank Tiep\u00adn\u00ader<\/cite><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The instal\u00adla\u00adtion and con\u00adnec\u00adtion con\u00addi\u00adtions are iden\u00adti\u00adcal, so it couldn\u2019t be eas\u00adi\u00ader. We didn\u2019t have to change any\u00adthing about the main dis\u00adtri\u00adb\u00adu\u00adtion with the ex-pen\u00adsive cir\u00adcuit break\u00aders, or the bus\u00adbar sys\u00adtem which is designed for sup\u00adply\u00ading the three trans\u00adform\u00aders.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>With the par\u00adal\u00adlel con\u00adnec\u00adtion of VRDTs, SBG had reached hith\u00ader\u00adto unchart\u00aded ter\u00adri\u00adto\u00adry. For such sit\u00adu\u00ada\u00adtions, among oth\u00ader rea\u00adsons, Rein\u00adhausen devel\u00adoped the ECOTAP\u00ae VPD\u00ae CONTROL PRO con\u00adtrol sys\u00adtem (see box). In order to ensure that the tap chang\u00aders of all three trans\u00adform\u00aders per\u00adform iden\u00adti\u00adcal switch\u00ading oper\u00ada\u00adtions at the exact same time, there\u00adby pre\u00advent\u00ading tap dif\u00adfer\u00adences, the con\u00adtrol sys\u00adtem cre\u00adates a master\/slave oper\u00ada\u00adtion. This means that one of the tap chang\u00aders sends a con\u00adtrol com\u00admand to the oth\u00ader two, thus ensur\u00ading smooth oper\u00ada\u00adtion. Frank Tiep\u00adn\u00ader was also excit\u00aded by the oth\u00ader pos\u00adsi\u00adbil\u00adi\u00adties afford\u00aded by the con\u00adtrol unit: \u201cThe con\u00adtrol sys\u00adtem can be very pre\u00adcise\u00adly pro\u00adgrammed using a web-based inter\u00adface. There is also a wide range of ways in which we can reg\u00adu\u00adlate, mon\u00adi\u00adtor, and con\u00adtrol the trans\u00adform\u00aders.\u201d Tiep\u00adn\u00ader believes that the goal of guar\u00adan\u00adtee\u00ading grid sta\u00adbil\u00adi\u00adty has now been achieved.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPar\u00adal\u00adlel-con\u00adnect\u00aded trans\u00adform\u00aders are com\u00admon\u00adplace even in indus\u00adtri\u00adal com\u00adpa\u00adnies. How\u00adev\u00ader, reg\u00adu\u00adlat\u00aded dis\u00adtri\u00adb\u00adu\u00adtion trans\u00adform\u00aders con\u00adnect\u00aded in par\u00adal\u00adlel on the pri\u00adma\u00adry and sec\u00adondary sides are a real nov\u00adel\u00adty.\u201d Michael B\u00fch\u00adn\u00adert, head of sales in Ger\u00admany at SBG, goes fur\u00adther: \u201cMany of our cus\u00adtomers today are already ben\u00ade\u00adfit\u00ading from the tech\u00adni\u00adcal exper\u00adtise we have accrued togeth\u00ader with MR, and a grow\u00ading num\u00adber of them work in indus\u00adtries where SBG VRDTs are employed along side Rein\u00adhausen con\u00adtrol sys\u00adtem tech\u00adnol\u00ado\u00adgy.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"wpcmsdev-box\">\n<div class=\"box-content\">\n<h5>EXAMPLE SE &amp; EC<\/h5>\n<hr class=\"yellow\">\n<p><strong>SE &amp; EC Shih\u00adlin Elec\u00adtric &amp; Engi\u00adneer\u00ading Cor\u00adpo\u00adra\u00adtion<\/strong>, based in Tai\u00adwan, pro\u00advides trans\u00adform\u00aders to cus\u00adtomers across the whole of South\u00adeast Asia. Indus\u00adtri\u00adal com\u00adpa\u00adnies in the region often have to con\u00adtend with weak grids and extreme volt\u00adage fluc\u00adtu\u00ada\u00adtions. While it is the volatile feed-in of renew\u00adable ener\u00adgies that places a bur\u00adden on the Euro\u00adpean grid, indus\u00adtri\u00adal com\u00adpa\u00adnies in South\u00adeast Asia often have to con\u00adtend with weak grids and extreme volt\u00adage fluc\u00adtu\u00ada\u00adtions. Accord\u00ading to Joseph Kuo, Senior Vice Pres\u00adi\u00addent at Shih\u00adlin: \u201cThe weak\u00adest grids in the South\u00adeast Asian mar\u00adket are found in Myan\u00admar, Laos, and Cam\u00adbo\u00addia. In addi\u00adtion, the main switch was also dam\u00adaged. Shih\u00adlin Man\u00adag\u00ader Kuo explains that \u201cthou\u00adsands of pro\u00adduc\u00adtion com\u00adpa\u00adnies in South\u00adeast Asia have to con\u00adtend with exact\u00adly these types of prob\u00adlems. This gives us an idea of just how high the demand is for tech\u00adnol\u00ado\u00adgy for sta\u00adbi\u00adliz\u00ading inter\u00adnal com\u00adpa\u00adny grids.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Shih\u00adlin is meet\u00ading this demand with dis\u00adtri\u00adb\u00adu\u00adtion trans\u00adform\u00aders. To this end, Rein\u00adhausen deliv\u00adered an ECOTAP\u00ae VPD\u00ae to Tai\u00adwan in Sep\u00adtem\u00adber 2017. The end cus\u00adtomer was an indus\u00adtri\u00adal com\u00adpa\u00adny in Myan\u00admar that had ordered a reg\u00adu\u00adlat\u00aded 1.5 MVA trans\u00adformer from Shih\u00adlin Elec\u00adtric &amp; Engi\u00adneer\u00ading Cor\u00adpo\u00adra\u00adtion. Lar\u00adry Hsieh, Man\u00adag\u00ader of Mate\u00adr\u00adi\u00adal Pur\u00adchas\u00ading Cen\u00adter at Shih\u00adlin, explains why they decid\u00aded on a tap chang\u00ader from Rein\u00adhausen: \u201cWe ini\u00adtial\u00adly con\u00adtem\u00adplat\u00aded procur\u00ading a tap chang\u00ader from a man\u00adu\u00adfac\u00adtur\u00ader in Shang\u00adhai.<\/p>\n<div class=\"wpcmsdev-box\">\n<div class=\"box-content\">\n<h5>REINHAUSEN INSIDE<\/h5>\n<hr class=\"yellow\">\n<h5>ECOTAP<sup>\u00ae<\/sup> VPD<sup>\u00ae<\/sup>&nbsp; \u2014 the compact class of distribution transformers<\/h5>\n<p>The ECOTAP<sup>\u00ae<\/sup> VPD<sup>\u00ae<\/sup> guar\u00adan\u00adtees indus\u00adtri\u00adal com\u00adpa\u00adnies a sta\u00adble volt\u00adage \u2014 come what may!
