This is no easy task\u2014and that\u2019s where we come in.<\/p>\n\n<h3>What did Siemens need from you?<\/h3>\n<p>In total, they need\u00aded eight hol\u00adlow sup\u00adport insu\u00adla\u00adtors to sup\u00adport and insu\u00adlate the hun\u00addred-ton deck, which hous\u00ades trans\u00adform\u00aders, cab\u00adi\u00adnets, and con\u00advert\u00ader cab\u00adi\u00adnets among oth\u00ader com\u00adpo\u00adnents.<\/p>\n<h3>What were the challenges you faced?<\/h3>\n<p>First\u00adly, the sta\u00adt\u00adic load is very high. The hol\u00adlow insu\u00adla\u00adtors have to sup\u00adport a weight of 100 met\u00adric tons. Sec\u00adond\u00adly, Cadarache is sit\u00adu\u00adat\u00aded in an area which expe\u00adri\u00adences seis\u00admic activ\u00adi\u00adty. The tubes there\u00adfore also have to be able to with\u00adstand dynam\u00adic forces with a wall thick\u00adness of just twelve mil\u00adlime\u00adters. And they could only be six meters tall because the deck is in a hall. That\u2019s real\u00adly short\u2014for volt ages of this mag\u00adni\u00adtude they would nor\u00admal\u00adly be eleven meters tall.<\/p>\n<h3>What solution did RPC provide?<\/h3>\n<p>The sta\u00adbil\u00adi\u00adty of the glass-fiber rein\u00adforced plas\u00adtic (GRP) in the hol\u00adlow insu\u00adla\u00adtors is cru\u00adcial. Our spe\u00adcial\u00adists used finite-ele\u00adment cal\u00adcu\u00adla\u00adtions to deter\u00admine the opti\u00admum angle and lay\u00ader struc\u00adture to ensure that the GRP tube can with\u00adstand the mechan\u00adi\u00adcal loads. And the way in which the glass fibers are wrapped around the tube also deter\u00admines the insu\u00adlat\u00ading capac\u00adi\u00adty. That\u2019s how we were able to achieve the lim\u00adit\u00aded height. The GRP tubes are filled with nitro\u00adgen to ensure that no mois\u00adture can get inside them. The inter\u00adnal pres\u00adsure is mon\u00adi\u00adtored at all times using pres\u00adsure sen\u00adsors from MESSKO and ISM tech\u00adnol\u00ado\u00adgy from MR. How were you able to meet the high quality standards?<\/h3>\n<p>Admit\u00adted\u00adly it was a very com\u00adpli\u00adcat\u00aded process. The hol\u00adlow insu\u00adla\u00adtors were sub\u00adject\u00aded to count\u00adless tests by an inde\u00adpen\u00addent lab\u00ado\u00adra\u00adto\u00adry as well as by the MR and RPC labs. Numer\u00adous mate\u00adr\u00adi\u00adal sam\u00adples were stud\u00adied and test\u00aded to assess their suit\u00adabil\u00adi\u00adty. Ulti\u00admate\u00adly, the tests showed that the stan\u00addard mate\u00adr\u00adi\u00adal that we also use for the tubes in on-load tap-chang\u00aders already meets the high require\u00adments.<\/p>\n<h3>Are the hollow insulators also suitable for other applications?<\/h3>\n<p>Yes. For exam\u00adple, for the thyris\u00adtor and rec\u00adti\u00adfi\u00ader tow\u00aders in HVDC appli\u00adca\u00adtions, some of which are sup\u00adport\u00aded by 16 insu\u00adla\u00adtors. With our GRP tubes, you only need four. There is also grow\u00ading demand for HVDC sys\u00adtems with com\u00adpos\u00adite insu\u00adla\u00adtors.
