To help the metrop\u00ado\u00adlis\u00ades become clean\u00ader, even more ener\u00adgy is set to be gen\u00ader\u00adat\u00aded from renew\u00adable resources in the future. But the favor\u00adable con\u00addi\u00adtions need\u00aded to gen\u00ader\u00adate this ener\u00adgy are found far away from the urban areas in the east. Instead, they are found in the sparse\u00adly pop\u00adu\u00adlat\u00aded west\u00adern part of the coun\u00adtry, such as in the province of Xin\u00adjiang, where it is very windy and there are many hours of sun\u00adshine, as well as numer\u00adous rivers to gen\u00ader\u00adate hydropow\u00ader. The chal\u00adlenge is to trans\u00adport this ener\u00adgy over a large dis\u00adtance to where it is need\u00aded, while keep\u00ading loss\u00ades to a min\u00adi\u00admum.<\/p>\n<h2>Transporting electrical energy over long distances<\/h2>\n<p>The solu\u00adtion to this chal\u00adlenge is high-volt\u00adage direct-cur\u00adrent (HVDC) trans\u00admis\u00adsion. To enable elec\u00adtric\u00adi\u00adty to be trans\u00adport\u00aded over large dis\u00adtances with the low\u00adest pos\u00adsi\u00adble loss\u00ades, the pow\u00ader must be trans\u00admit\u00adted with a low cur\u00adrent and high trans\u00admis\u00adsion volt\u00adage. For long trans\u00admis\u00adsion paths, this is most eco\u00adnom\u00adi\u00adcal with direct cur\u00adrent. At 3,284 kilo\u00adme\u00adters long, it will have a trans\u00admis\u00adsion capac\u00adi\u00adty of twelve gigawatts when it is con\u00adnect\u00aded to the grid, which is expect\u00aded to take place at the end of 2018. This rough\u00adly cor\u00adre\u00adsponds to the pow\u00ader of twelve con\u00adven\u00adtion\u00adal large pow\u00ader sta\u00adtions. 1,100 kilo\u00advolts of direct-cur\u00adrent volt\u00adage is required for this trans\u00admis\u00adsion. The trans\u00adform\u00aders, which were man\u00adu\u00adfac\u00adtured at two Siemens sites and two part\u00adner plants in Chi\u00adna, have set a new record as well: Each of the sev\u00aden 1,100 kilo\u00advolt DC sin\u00adgle-phase trans\u00adform\u00aders is 37.5 meters long, 14.5 meters high, twelve meters wide, and weighs 909 met\u00adric tons when in oper\u00ada\u00adtion. With a trans\u00admis\u00adsion capac\u00adi\u00adty of 587.1 mega\u00advolt-amperes each, they are the most pow\u00ader\u00adful HVDC trans\u00adform\u00aders in the world. When it came to the on-load tap-chang\u00aders, Siemens there\u00adfore used the VACUTAP<sup>\u00ae<\/sup> VR<sup>\u00ae<\/sup> from Maschi\u00adnen\u00adfab\u00adrik Rein\u00adhausen (MR). Silke Schwarzw\u00e4lder, Port\u00adfo\u00adlio Man\u00adag\u00ader for tap chang\u00aders at MR, explains: \u201cThe vac\u00adu\u00adum on-load tap-chang\u00ader VACUTAP<sup>\u00ae<\/sup> VR<sup>\u00ae<\/sup> is the most suit\u00adable option for the extra-high-volt\u00adage range and there\u00adfore for HVDC appli\u00adca\u00adtions. It is also very depend\u00adable in oper\u00ada\u00adtion.\u201d The VACUTAP<sup>\u00ae<\/sup> Advanced Arc Con\u00adtrol Sys\u00adtem enables the reli\u00adable quench\u00ading of the switch\u00ading arc and the VACUTAP<sup>\u00ae<\/sup> Step Pro\u00adtec\u00adtion Sys\u00adtem<sup>\u00ae<\/sup> offers pro\u00adtec\u00adtion against over\u00advolt\u00adages.<\/p>\n<p>Anoth\u00ader advan\u00adtage is that the VACUTAP<sup>\u00ae<\/sup> VR<sup>\u00ae<\/sup> is extreme\u00adly eco\u00adnom\u00adi\u00adcal, as it is capa\u00adble of per\u00adform\u00ading 300,000 tap-change oper\u00ada\u00adtions with\u00adout any main\u00adte\u00adnance. This includ\u00aded the glob\u00adal mar\u00adket leader in high-volt\u00adage bush\u00adings \u2013 HSP Hochspan\u00adnungs\u00adger\u00e4te GmbH from the Ger\u00adman city of Cologne. Mar\u00adcus Cramer von Claus\u00adbruch, Region\u00adal Sales Man\u00adag\u00ader at HSP, describes the scale of the project: \u201cWe built a sep\u00ada\u00adrate plant to pro\u00adduce the 1,100 kilo\u00advolt DC bush\u00adings, as the exist\u00ading hall was too small.\u201d The bush\u00adings pro\u00adduced by HSP for the HVDC trans\u00adform\u00aders are 19 meters long and weigh 15.5 met\u00adric tons. Yet anoth\u00ader record! HSP is one of the few com\u00adpa\u00adnies any\u00adwhere in the world that can pro\u00adduce bush\u00adings in such large dimen\u00adsions using resin tech\u00adnol\u00ado\u00adgy. The sol\u00adid active com\u00adpo\u00adnent con\u00adsists of resin-impreg\u00adnat\u00aded paper (RIP), which means that the bush\u00ading is free from oil. \u201cThis require\u00adment was stip\u00adu\u00adlat\u00aded by Chi\u00adna, as oil is too high a risk fac\u00adtor when used with these com\u00adpo\u00adnents for extra-high-volt\u00adage appli\u00adca\u00adtions.\u201d For the insu\u00adla\u00adtion, HSP used hol\u00adlow com\u00adpos\u00adite insu\u00adla\u00adtors with shield\u00ading from Rein\u00adhausen France SAS. \u201cThere are not many com\u00adpa\u00adnies that can pro\u00adduce hol\u00adlow insu\u00adla\u00adtors of 15 meters in length which also sat\u00adis\u00adfy the demand\u00ading spec\u00adi\u00adfi\u00adca\u00adtions,\u201d explains Cramer von Claus\u00adbruch.<\/p>\n<p>Along\u00adside the insu\u00adlat\u00ading prop\u00ader\u00adties, pro\u00adtec\u00adtion against earth\u00adquakes was also an impor\u00adtant require\u00adment. \u201cWe\u2019re talk\u00ading about 1,200 kilo\u00advolts here.
