At the Lausitz Energie Kraftwerke AG (LEAG) pow\u00ader plant in Boxberg, he is respon\u00adsi\u00adble for high-volt\u00adage tech\u00adnol\u00ado\u00adgy and elec\u00adtri\u00adcal pro\u00adtec\u00adtion. \u201cHigh-volt\u00adage tech\u00adnol\u00ado\u00adgy \u2013 just the name is excit\u00ading!\u201d says Lukas with a grin. His enthu\u00adsi\u00adasm for the field began right at the start of his career in 1981, when he start\u00aded an appren\u00adtice\u00adship as an elec\u00adtri\u00adcian at the Boxberg pow\u00ader plant.<\/p>\n<p>Just under ten years lat\u00ader he com\u00adplet\u00aded a degree in elec\u00adtri\u00adcal and automa\u00adtion engi\u00adneer\u00ading, before going on to do anoth\u00ader degree in mecha\u00adtron\u00adic sys\u00adtems at the start of the 2000s. Up to that point, he had been work\u00ading pri\u00admar\u00adi\u00adly in the field of ener\u00adgy gen\u00ader\u00ada\u00adtion and get\u00adting to know every last detail of the process\u00ades in that area. In 2004, after com\u00adplet\u00ading his sec\u00adond degree, he then switched from oper\u00ada\u00adtions man\u00adage\u00adment to tech\u00adni\u00adcal ser\u00advice. (\u00a9 Sven D\u00f6ring)<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Lukas explains the chal\u00adlenges that come with his role: \u201cMy job is to ensure that we plan main\u00adte\u00adnance strate\u00adgi\u00adcal\u00adly and car\u00adry out main\u00adte\u00adnance activ\u00adi\u00adties at the best pos\u00adsi\u00adble time. Instead of plan\u00adning our main\u00adte\u00adnance activ\u00adi\u00adties based on time as we did ten years ago, we now plan on the basis of the actu\u00adal wear.\u201d In order to actu\u00adal\u00adly imple\u00adment this in prac\u00adtice, how\u00adev\u00ader, Lukas needs reli\u00adable, high-qual\u00adi\u00adty infor\u00adma\u00adtion about the con\u00addi\u00adtion of all trans\u00adform\u00aders.<\/p>\n<p>To this end, he has been work\u00ading close\u00adly with MR since 2006. Back then, the part\u00adner\u00adship began with a com\u00adpli\u00adca\u00adtion relat\u00ading to a tap chang\u00ader. \u201cOf course that wasn\u2019t a par\u00adtic\u00adu\u00adlar\u00adly fun expe\u00adri\u00adence. But right from the start, I was impressed at the open\u00adness of the MR employ\u00adees and their abil\u00adi\u00adty to respond pos\u00adi\u00adtive\u00adly to crit\u00adi\u00adcism. This meant that deal\u00ading with a com\u00adpli\u00adca\u00adtion quick\u00adly evolved into a for\u00adward-look\u00ading part\u00adner\u00adship.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>Discussing Every Detail<\/h2>\n<p>As a result of this col\u00adlab\u00ado\u00adra\u00adtion, Lukas and his col\u00adleagues start\u00aded off by installing the TAPGUARD\u00ae 260 mon\u00adi\u00adtor\u00ading sys\u00adtem on a pilot trans\u00adformer to mon\u00adi\u00adtor the func\u00adtions of the tap chang\u00ader. After inten\u00adsive train\u00ading and dis\u00adcus\u00adsions at MR, LEAG put the sys\u00adtem through its paces. Through\u00adout the process, Lukas fre\u00adquent\u00adly went back to MR with queries and sug\u00adges\u00adtions for the pre\u00adcise con\u00adfig\u00adu\u00adra\u00adtion of the con\u00adtrol cab\u00adi\u00adnet.<\/p>\n<p>Thorsten Kr\u00fcger, Direc\u00adtor of Dig\u00adi\u00adtal Ven\u00adtures at MR, recalls the expe\u00adri\u00adence: \u201cIt was a chal\u00adleng\u00ading task, but we were impressed by the lev\u00adel of detail we could go into when dis\u00adcussing the sys\u00adtem and its pre\u00adcise func\u00adtions with Mr. Lukas and LEAG. It is pre\u00adcise\u00adly this type of exchange that makes our rela\u00adtion\u00adship so fruit\u00adful on both sides.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p dir=\"LTR\" align=\"LEFT\">\u201cNow, thanks to the system\u2019s excel\u00adlent mon\u00adi\u00adtor\u00ading capa\u00adbil\u00adi\u00adties, we can be more flex\u00adi\u00adble.\u201d<cite>Michael Lukas, who is respon\u00adsi\u00adble for high-volt\u00adage tech\u00adnol\u00ado\u00adgy and elec\u00adtri\u00adcal pro\u00adtec\u00adtion at LEAG<\/cite><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Once Lukas was com\u00adplete\u00adly con\u00advinced by the TAPGUARD\u00ae\u2019s abil\u00adi\u00adties, he had the sys\u00adtem installed on all machine trans\u00adform\u00aders at LEAG\u2019s pow\u00ader plants and added the TAPGUARD\u00ae to the spec\u00adi\u00adfi\u00adca\u00adtion for new trans\u00adform\u00aders. \u201cThe sys\u00adtem has already proven its worth in prac\u00adtice,\u201d he says. \u201cThere was a case when it was trig\u00adgered because there were irregular\u00adities dur\u00ading switch\u00ading which came from the mech\u00adanics rather than from the tap chang\u00ader itself. Based on this infor\u00adma\u00adtion we were able to, in the first instance, keep a 500 MW pow\u00ader plant unit run\u00adning with a 600 MVA trans\u00adformer and then bring it to a con\u00adtrolled stop in order to rec\u00adti\u00adfy the prob\u00adlem.<\/p>\n<h2>Monitoring for the Entire Fleet<\/h2>\n<p>After a while it became evi\u00addent that, although there were advan\u00adtages to be gained from Mon\u00adi\u00adtor\u00ading the on-load tap-chang\u00aders with the TAPGUARD, LEAG required a more exten\u00adsive sys\u00adtem to keep an eye on its entire fleet in line with its for\u00adward-look\u00ading main\u00adte\u00adnance strat\u00ade\u00adgy. Up to that point, Lukas had been work\u00ading with var\u00adi\u00adous sys\u00adtems to keep an eye on the oil in the trans\u00adform\u00aders, the tap chang\u00aders, cool\u00ading sys\u00adtems, and high-volt\u00adage bush\u00adings \u2013 but he lacked a sys\u00adtem that would col\u00adlect and con\u00adsol\u00adi\u00addate all of the infor\u00adma\u00adtion and then issue a rec\u00adom\u00admend\u00aded action.<\/p>\n<p>When MR sug\u00adgest\u00aded com\u00adbin\u00ading the TRAFOGUARD\u00ae with the TESSA\u00ae fleet mon\u00adi\u00adtor\u00ading sys\u00adtem, Lukas was keen to find out more. \u201cThe deci\u00adsion to take the next step and break new ground is always dri\u00adven by curios\u00adi\u00adty,\u201d explains Lukas. \u201cI want to find out what the sys\u00adtem can do and whether it will help me and the com\u00adpa\u00adny. (\u00a9 Sven D\u00f6ring)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>As a large num\u00adber of sys\u00adtems and sen\u00adsors from MR and oth\u00ader man\u00adu\u00adfac\u00adtur\u00aders have been installed on LEAG\u2019s trans\u00adform\u00aders over the years, it was cru\u00adcial for Lukas that the sys\u00adtem was able to process the input from var\u00adi\u00adous man\u00adu\u00adfac\u00adtur\u00aders\u2019 com\u00adpo\u00adnents. \u201cThe close col\u00adlab\u00ado\u00adra\u00adtion with LEAG and Mr. Lukas suits my team\u2019s new way of work\u00ading very well,\u201d says Thorsten Kr\u00fcger.<\/p>\n<p>His Dig\u00adi\u00adtal Ven\u00adtures depart\u00adment is increas\u00ading\u00adly using agile meth\u00adods and mov\u00ading away from the idea of defin\u00ading a fixed project plan and then implement\u00ading it rigid\u00adly from begin\u00adning to end. Instead, the focus is on includ\u00ading the cus\u00adtomer in the process at an ear\u00adly stage in order to obtain impor\u00adtant feed\u00adback. \u201cEven when we know the cus\u00adtomer well, there is still a chance we will devel\u00adop fea\u00adtures that they don\u2019t actu\u00adal\u00adly con\u00adsid\u00ader par\u00adtic\u00adu\u00adlar\u00adly impor\u00adtant. Main\u00adtain\u00ading a close dia\u00adlog like the one we have with LEAG is an effi\u00adcient way to cre\u00adate solu\u00adtions that pro\u00advide real cus\u00adtomer ben\u00ade\u00adfits.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>Valuable Experience<\/h2>\n<p>When it came to the imple\u00admen\u00adta\u00adtion of the TRAFOGUARD\u00ae and TESSA\u00ae sys\u00adtem, Michael Lukas once again pro\u00advid\u00aded detailed feed\u00adback at all stages of devel\u00adop\u00adment. For exam\u00adple, he sug\u00adgest\u00aded using a dif\u00adfer\u00adent method than the one pro\u00adposed by MR to cal\u00adcu\u00adlate an aver\u00adage val\u00adue. \u201cI have gained expe\u00adri\u00adence from day-to-day oper\u00ada\u00adtion that I can pass on,\u201d says Lukas.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am very grate\u00adful that I am able to do that, par\u00adtic\u00adu\u00adlar\u00adly in such a trust\u00ading work\u00ading rela\u00adtion\u00adship. It\u2019s just nice to be under\u00adstood.\u201d Kr\u00fcger adds: \u201cWe\u2019ve known each oth\u00ader for long enough now to know that a sug\u00adges\u00adtion like that is based on a wealth of expe\u00adri\u00adence and is def\u00adi\u00adnite\u00adly worth look\u00ading at in more detail. In that par\u00adtic\u00adu\u00adlar case, we imple\u00adment\u00aded the sug\u00adgest\u00aded method in the sys\u00adtem straight away.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Lukas and his col\u00adleagues are now using the TRAFOGUARD\u00ae and TESSA\u00ae in their fleet. Lukas par\u00adtic\u00adu\u00adlar\u00adly val\u00adues the system\u2019s abil\u00adi\u00adty to fil\u00adter and sort a huge quan\u00adti\u00adty of infor\u00adma\u00adtion and alert the user to poten\u00adtial prob\u00adlems with excep\u00adtion\u00adal pre\u00adci\u00adsion. In this way, the sys\u00adtem is help\u00ading Lukas to imple\u00adment the par\u00ada\u00addigm shift in the main\u00adte\u00adnance strat\u00ade\u00adgy.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p dir=\"LTR\" align=\"LEFT\">\u201cRight from the start,I was impressed at the open\u00adness of the MR employ\u00adees.\u201d<cite>Michael Lukas<\/cite><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>\u201cPre\u00advi\u00adous\u00adly, we took each trans\u00adformer offline at a set time in order to car\u00adry out main\u00adte\u00adnance. Now, thanks to the system\u2019s excel\u00adlent mon\u00adi\u00adtor\u00ading capa\u00adbil\u00adi\u00adties, we can be more flex\u00adi\u00adble. We can now respond more effec\u00adtive\u00adly to the needs of the mar\u00adket with regard to flex\u00adi\u00adble pow\u00ader gen\u00ader\u00ada\u00adtion \u2013 after all, the mar\u00adket doesn\u2019t care about fixed main\u00adte\u00adnance times.\u201d MR is cur\u00adrent\u00adly work\u00ading close\u00adly with LEAG on the next stage of devel\u00adop\u00adment for TESSA\u00ae, with the aim of bring\u00ading even more flex\u00adi\u00adbil\u00adi\u00adty to the company\u2019s main\u00adte\u00adnance activ\u00adi\u00adties.<\/p>\n<h2>Learning Together<\/h2>\n<p>aving an oppor\u00adtu\u00adni\u00adty to share expe\u00adri\u00adences is some\u00adthing that is very close to Lukas\u2019s heart: \u201cAs a young engi\u00adneer, I often found myself think\u00ading \u2019I can\u2019t be the only one fac\u00ading this chal\u00adlenge\u2019.\u201d At this point LEAG was still part of Vat\u00adten\u00adfall. He there\u00adfore estab\u00adlished a reg\u00adu\u00adlar plat\u00adform for shar\u00ading expe\u00adri\u00adences relat\u00ading to trans\u00adform\u00aders with col\u00adleagues from oth\u00ader Vat\u00adten\u00adfall sites.<\/p>\n<p>When LEAG was found\u00aded, this oppor\u00adtu\u00adni\u00adty was no longer avail\u00adable so Lukas decid\u00aded to set up the \u201cOber\u00adlausitzer Energie-Sym\u00ad\u00adpo\u00adsium\u201d (Upper Lusa\u00adtia Ener\u00adgy Sym\u00adpo\u00adsium) in col\u00adlab\u00ado\u00adra\u00adtion with the Zittau\/G\u00f6rlitz Uni\u00adver\u00adsi\u00adty of Applied Sci\u00adences. The first event took place in 2017 and the next one is sched\u00aduled for 2019. \u201cFor me, it is impor\u00adtant to be able to pass on my expe\u00adri\u00adence and learn from oth\u00aders. You don\u2019t have to rein\u00advent the wheel every time you come up against a Prob\u00adlem \u2013 you can ben\u00ade\u00adfit from exist\u00ading approach\u00ades.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Open dia\u00adlog will also con\u00adtin\u00adue to be the cor\u00adnerstone of the part\u00adner\u00adship between LEAG and MR. Kr\u00fcger says: \u201cWe con\u00adsid\u00ader our\u00adselves lucky to have cus\u00adtomers like LEAG and Mr. Lukas. His crit\u00adi\u00adcal, fair, and well-found\u00aded ideas and sug\u00adges\u00adtions help us to devel\u00adop and improve togeth\u00ader.\u201d Lukas is also look\u00ading for\u00adward to their con\u00adtin\u00adued col\u00adlab\u00ado\u00adra\u00adtion. He sums up his atti\u00adtude to the future with an alter\u00adna\u00adtive slo\u00adgan for his com\u00adpa\u00adny: \u201cLEAG \u2013 as far as I\u2019m con\u00adcerned, it could just as eas\u00adi\u00adly stand for \u2019learn, engage, act, and grow\u2019.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"LTR\" align=\"LEFT\">\n<\/p><div class=\"wpcmsdev-box\">\n<div class=\"box-content\">\n<h5 align=\"LEFT\">Energy for Millions<\/h5>\n<hr class=\"yellow\">\n<p dir=\"LTR\" align=\"LEFT\">With around 8,000 employ\u00adees, LEAG (which com\u00adpris\u00ades Lausitz Energie Berg\u00adbau AG and Lausitz Energie Kraftwerke AG) is the largest ener\u00adgy com\u00adpa\u00adny in east\u00adern Ger\u00admany and the fourth-largest Ger\u00adman pow\u00ader plant oper\u00ada\u00adtor. The com\u00adpa\u00adny extracts around 60 mil\u00adlion met\u00adric tons of brown coal which it uses in its pow\u00ader plants in Bran\u00adden\u00adburg and Sax\u00adony.
