Pro\u00adduc\u00ading equip\u00adment on this scale has put Rein\u00adhausen and Regens\u00adburg firm\u00adly on the world map. No oth\u00ader sup\u00adpli\u00ader includes tap chang\u00aders of this size as stan\u00addard in its port\u00adfo\u00adlio or has so much expe\u00adri\u00adence in high\u00adly spe\u00adcial\u00adized areas of appli\u00adca\u00adtion. How\u00adev\u00ader, at the out\u00adset, it wasn\u2019t clear if the de-ener\u00adgized tap-chang\u00aders PTI Trans\u00adform\u00aders need\u00ad\u00aded would be tech\u00adni\u00adcal\u00adly fea\u00adsi\u00adble even for Rein\u00adhausen.<\/p>\n<h2>Switching Step of 112&nbsp;kV<\/h2>\n<p>PTI Trans\u00adform\u00aders had been com\u00admis\u00adsioned by a Cana\u00addi\u00adan ener\u00adgy provider to replace a trans\u00adformer for a hydro\u00adelec\u00adtric pow\u00ader plant that had reached the end of its ser\u00advice life. The new trans\u00adformer had to be able to switch between one trans\u00admis\u00adsion line at 250&nbsp;kilo\u00advolts and anoth\u00ader at 143&nbsp;kilo\u00advolts. There was no doubt at all in the mind of the Cana\u00addi\u00adan man\u00adag\u00ader that Rein\u00adhausen could bring its tech\u00adni\u00adcal know-how and its exper\u00adtise to bear in build\u00ading a de-ener\u00adgized tap-chang\u00ader (DETC) to this spec\u00adi\u00adfi\u00adca\u00adtion. But it was obvi\u00adous that it wouldn\u2019t be easy.<\/p>\n<h2>Supersized DETCs<\/h2>\n<p>Karl-Heinz Sperg\u00ader, who man\u00adaged the project at Rein\u00adhausen, said: \u201cHis\u00adtor\u00adi\u00adcal\u00adly, we have always relied upon rotary de-ener\u00adgized tap-chang\u00aders with a head design. De-ener\u00adgized tap-chang\u00aders of this mag\u00adni\u00adtude can only be pro\u00adduced using this type of design. A straight-line de-ener\u00adgized tap-chang\u00ader would need to be more than ten meters long to achieve the kind of per\u00adfor\u00admance val\u00adues we were look\u00ading for.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_4530\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4530\" style=\"width: 800px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-4530 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/onload.reinhausen.com\/de\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/25\/2019\/07\/Montage-des-RCA-Umstellers-bei-der-Maschinenfabrik-Reinhausen.jpg\" alt width=\"800\" height=\"532\"><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-4530\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Installing the de-ener\u00adgized tap-chang\u00ader head takes a great deal of skill and dex\u00adter\u00adi\u00adty. (\u00a9 Hel\u00admut Koch)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>One of the chal\u00adlenges that arose dur\u00ading the devel\u00adop\u00adment stage was that Reinhausen\u2019s design was only able to accom\u00admo\u00addate test volt\u00adages up to a max\u00adimum of 750 kilo\u00advolts. Mr. Sperg\u00ader explains: \u201cWhile these de-ener\u00ad\u00adgized tap-chang\u00aders are huge, there are still cer\u00adtain restric\u00adtions on the space we have to work with and we can\u2019t just increase the dis\u00adtance between the con\u00adtacts as much as we want. That made the physics of this project a real test. But true to our mot\u00adto \u201cIf some\u00adthing is doable, we\u2019ll do it\u201d we worked togeth\u00ader with PTI Trans\u00adform\u00aders to find the right solu\u00adtion.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>Special Design<\/h2>\n<p>Anoth\u00ader sig\u00adnif\u00adi\u00adcant fac\u00adtor con\u00adtribut\u00ading to the com\u00adplex\u00adi\u00adty of the project was the trans\u00admis\u00adsion ratio of 1:1.78. Switch\u00ading 143&nbsp;kilo\u00advolts to 250&nbsp;kilo\u00advolts in a sin\u00adgle step requires six high-volt\u00adage wind\u00ading strands\u2014for every phase.<\/p>\n<p>For PTI Trans\u00adform\u00aders, this meant hous\u00ading 18 wind\u00adings and three of the mas\u00adsive tap chang\u00aders with\u00adin the trans\u00adformer, some\u00adthing which, as PTI Trans\u00adform\u00aders\u2019 Mr. Par\u00adty\u00adka explained, was only pos\u00adsi\u00adble with Reinhausen\u2019s sup\u00adport: \u201cThe trans\u00adformer pow\u00ader is high\u00adly depen\u00addent on the tap-chang\u00ader capac\u00adi\u00adty, so the devel\u00adop\u00adment depart\u00adments work\u00ading on the tap-chang\u00ader design and the trans\u00adformer design had to work togeth\u00ader very close\u00adly.<\/p>\n<p>Only as a team was it pos\u00adsi\u00adble for us to coor\u00addi\u00adnate the wind\u00ading con\u00adfig\u00adu\u00adra\u00adtion with the spe\u00adcial design of the tap chang\u00ader.\u201d The PTI Trans\u00adform\u00aders and Rein\u00adhausen experts com\u00adplet\u00aded this com\u00adplex devel\u00adop\u00adment task in a mere three months, result\u00ading in the order being placed in Feb\u00adru\u00adary 2019 and allow\u00ading the de-ener\u00adgized tap-chang\u00aders to go into pro\u00adduc\u00adtion. The tech\u00adni\u00adcians were then able to con\u00adstruct the three spe\u00adcial pieces of equip\u00adment in just five days. Mr. Sperg\u00ader, him\u00adself an elec\u00adtri\u00adcal engi\u00adneer, said: \u201cBecause we insist on deliv\u00ader\u00ading 100\u2009% qual\u00adi\u00adty, the tap chang\u00aders were then sent to our test lab\u00ado\u00adra\u00adto\u00adry.\u201d There, it was found that the engi\u00adneers had deliv\u00adered on their promis\u00ades.<\/p>\n<div class=\"p-container\">\n<figure id=\"attachment_4531\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4531\" style=\"width: 532px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-4531 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/onload.reinhausen.com\/de\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/25\/2019\/07\/RCA-Umsteller-im-Versuchsfeld-bei-Maschinenfabrik-Reinhausen.jpg\" alt width=\"532\" height=\"800\"><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-4531\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The moment of truth: A test volt\u00adage of 1,000&nbsp;kV will soon be flow\u00ading through the sys\u00adtem. As is typ\u00adi\u00adcal for this kind of devel\u00adop\u00adment project, both sides involved in the process were under real pres\u00adsure at times, but we knew that we could rely on Reinhausen\u2019s exper\u00adtise.
