Orig\u00adi\u00adnal\u00adly, I worked on a lot of social and urban devel\u00adop\u00adment projects. I first came into con\u00adtact with the ener\u00adgy sec\u00adtor dur\u00ading a major project that focused on renew\u00adable ener\u00adgy sup\u00adplies in the Azores.<\/p>\n<p>An island in the arch\u00adi\u00adpel\u00adago need\u00aded to be sup\u00adplied sole\u00adly with solar and wind ener\u00adgy, so it required a bat\u00adtery stor\u00adage sys\u00adtem. As some\u00adone with no tech\u00adni\u00adcal back\u00adground, I looked at the prob\u00adlem from all angles to find out what finan\u00adcial and polit\u00adi\u00adcal con\u00addi\u00adtions influ\u00adenced the project and what had to change in order to mar\u00adket these kinds of projects all over the world. I picked up the tech\u00adni\u00adcal exper\u00adtise pret\u00adty much as I went along.<\/p>\n<h3>What made you decide to found your own company?<\/h3>\n<p>Dur\u00ading that large project, I noticed that the high price of bat\u00adter\u00adies posed a major obsta\u00adcle when it came to financ\u00ading sys\u00adtems like these and mak\u00ading them prof\u00aditable. At the same time, it was clear that the con\u00adtin\u00adued expan\u00adsion of pho\u00adto\u00advoltaics and wind ener\u00adgy was lim\u00adit\u00aded by fluc\u00adtu\u00ada\u00adtions in the grid.<\/p>\n<p>To over\u00adcome these issues, you need to have some kind of stor\u00adage sys\u00adtem that is not only able to bal\u00adance out con\u00adtin\u00adu\u00adous fluc\u00adtu\u00ada\u00adtions in the grid but is also able to trans\u00adfer ener\u00adgy from day to night or from windy to calm con\u00addi\u00adtions. With\u00adout this kind of sys\u00adtem, the pro\u00adpor\u00adtion of elec\u00adtric\u00adi\u00adty pro\u00adduced from renew\u00adable sources of ener\u00adgy will remain very low. When we became aware of this sit\u00adu\u00ada\u00adtion, Erich Bosch and I want\u00aded to ded\u00adi\u00adcate our\u00adselves to stor\u00adage technology\u2014and that\u2019s what led us to estab\u00adlish Autarsys.<\/p>\n\n<figure id=\"attachment_4547\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4547\" style=\"width: 800px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-4547 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/onload.reinhausen.com\/de\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/25\/2019\/07\/Stromspeicher-Palawan.jpg\" alt width=\"800\" height=\"600\"><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-4547\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">With the help of MR\u2019s pow\u00ader-con\u00adver\u00adsion solu\u00adtion, Autarsys is able to build smart ener\u00adgy stor\u00adage sys\u00adtems (ESS) that pro\u00advide even remote areas with an autonomous, sta\u00adble pow\u00ader grid. One exam\u00adple is on the island of Palawan in the Philip\u00adpines. Here, the ESS is being tak\u00aden to its des\u00adti\u00adna\u00adtion.(\u00a9 Autarsys GmbH)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>We don\u2019t just make soft\u00adware and devel\u00adop projects\u2014we also cre\u00adate real-world prod\u00aduct solu\u00adtions in con\u00adtain\u00ader form so that we can bring stor\u00adage tech\u00adnolo\u00adgies to the mar\u00adket cheap\u00adly and on a large scale. This is vital, as a major\u00adi\u00adty of the world\u2019s pop\u00adu\u00adla\u00adtion still has either no access or only lim\u00adit\u00aded access to elec\u00adtric\u00adi\u00adty. And this despite the fact that in many devel\u00adop\u00ading coun\u00adtries the con\u00addi\u00adtions for wind and solar plants are actu\u00adal\u00adly favor\u00adable. The miss\u00ading link is a sta\u00adble pow\u00ader grid that has stor\u00adage capa\u00adbil\u00adi\u00adties and is also afford\u00adable.<\/p>\n<h3>What exactly does your solutionlook like?<\/h3>\n<p>The solu\u00adtions we pro\u00advide are ener\u00adgy stor\u00adage sys\u00adtems (ESS) which take advan\u00adtage of the tech\u00adni\u00adcal ben\u00ade\u00adfits deliv\u00adered by the lat\u00adest gen\u00ader\u00ada\u00adtion of lithi\u00adum-ion bat\u00adter\u00adies. When demand for ener\u00adgy is low, the ESS can store ener\u00adgy gen\u00ader\u00adat\u00aded by var\u00adi\u00adous sys\u00adtems, such as solar plants, wind plants, and diesel gen\u00ader\u00ada\u00adtors, and then release it when demand increas\u00ades. As a result, these sys\u00adtems guar\u00adan\u00adtee a smooth, con\u00adtin\u00adu\u00adous pow\u00ader sup\u00adply, act\u00ading as a buffer between gen\u00ader\u00adat\u00ading plants and, in off-grid oper\u00ada\u00adtion, tak\u00ading on the key role of a grid-form\u00ading pow\u00ader plant, a cen\u00adtral ele\u00adment which con\u00adtrols grid fre\u00adquen\u00adcy and volt\u00adage.<\/p>\n<h3>Why have you opted to use GRIDCON\u00ae PCS, the modular power conversion system?<\/h3>\n<p>The pow\u00ader-con\u00adver\u00adsion solu\u00adtion from Maschi\u00adnen\u00adfab\u00adrik Rein\u00adhausen acts as a cen\u00adtral, smart net\u00adwork-man\u00adage\u00adment sys\u00adtem. The pow\u00ader con\u00advert\u00aders fil\u00adter things like har\u00admon\u00adics, com\u00adpen\u00adsate for reac\u00adtive pow\u00ader, and active\u00adly bal\u00adance the load, all of which keeps the volt\u00adage sta\u00adble in the grid. A sophis\u00adticated con\u00adtrol sys\u00adtem uses struc\u00adtur\u00adal cal\u00adcu\u00adla\u00adtions based on char\u00adac\u00adter\u00adis\u00adtic curves to ensure that oper\u00ada\u00adtion remains smooth and works in par\u00adal\u00adlel to the solar plants, wind plants, and diesel gen\u00ader\u00ada\u00adtors that feed in pow\u00ader.<\/p>\n<h3>What other advantages are there to using the GRIDCON\u00ae PCS?<\/h3>\n<p>There are many. First, a key advan\u00adtage for our large solu\u00adtions in par\u00adtic\u00adu\u00adlar is that the sys\u00adtem is built up from an active grid fil\u00adter that bal\u00adances out cer\u00adtain fluc\u00adtu\u00ada\u00adtions itself. The GRIDCON\u00ae PCS also has a very rapid switch\u00ading fre\u00adquen\u00adcy, mak\u00ading it a com\u00adpact pow\u00ader con\u00advert\u00ader that can be used any\u00adwhere. In addi\u00adtion, the GRIDCON\u00ae PCS is extreme\u00adly easy to main\u00adtain, as every sin\u00adgle mod\u00adule is a com\u00adplete pow\u00ader con\u00advert\u00ader.<\/p>\n<p>When main\u00adte\u00adnance work does need to be car\u00adried out, this means that we don\u2019t need to fly in a specialist\u2014trained staff at our local part\u00adners can replace parts or expand the sys\u00adtem them\u00adselves by replac\u00ading entire mod\u00adules, even in remote areas. This is some\u00adthing our com\u00adpeti\u00adtors can\u00adnot offer. In their sys\u00adtems, the pow\u00ader con\u00advert\u00ader either works as a whole or mal\u00adfunc\u00adtions com\u00adplete\u00adly.<\/p>\n<p>Anoth\u00ader ben\u00ade\u00adfit is the DC\/DC boost\u00ader, also known as a boost con\u00advert\u00ader, which is part of the GRIDCON\u00ae PCS build\u00ading for mod\u00adules from 42&nbsp;kW to 126&nbsp;kVA. It solves a prob\u00adlem that occurs fre\u00adquent\u00adly in cas\u00ades where the ener\u00adgy accu\u00admu\u00adla\u00adtor is lat\u00ader upgrad\u00aded, which is that the orig\u00adi\u00adnal bat\u00adtery mod\u00adules are no longer being made or the man\u00adu\u00adfac\u00adtur\u00ader has changed the spec\u00adi\u00adfi\u00adca\u00adtions. New bat\u00adter\u00adies with dif\u00adfer\u00adent volt\u00adages and topolo\u00adgies must be able to work together\u2014so this is where the DC\/DC boost\u00ader comes in, as it enables you to inte\u00adgrate new bat\u00adter\u00adies with\u00adout hav\u00ading to buy a whole new sys\u00adtem. Expand\u00ading the sys\u00adtem by adding indi\u00advid\u00adual mod\u00adules pro\u00advides a fan\u00adtas\u00adtic cost ben\u00ade\u00adfit.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cThe pow\u00ader-con\u00adver\u00adsion solu\u00adtion from Maschi\u00adnen\u00adfab\u00adrik Rein\u00adhausen acts as a cen\u00adtral, smart, net\u00adwork-Man\u00adage\u00adment sys\u00adtem.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h3>Which applications is your energy storage solution suitable for?<\/h3>\n<p>It\u2019s pri\u00admar\u00adi\u00adly used in off-grid appli\u00adca\u00adtions and rur\u00adal elec\u00adtri\u00adfi\u00adca\u00adtion projects, which involve oper\u00adat\u00ading inde\u00adpen\u00addent grids based on pho\u00adto\u00advolta\u00adic sys\u00adtems in tan\u00addem with bat\u00adtery sys\u00adtems and ensur\u00ading they remain sta\u00adble. We sell stan\u00addard\u00adized sys\u00adtems for these appli\u00adca\u00adtions in order to take advan\u00adtage of the economies of scale that series pro\u00adduc\u00adtion brings.<\/p>\n<p>As a result, we can pro\u00advide sta\u00adble and afford\u00adable grids to the most remote cor\u00adners of the world. The solu\u00adtion is also used in com\u00admer\u00adcial and indus\u00adtri\u00adal projects. These include facil\u00adi\u00adties such as cement works or mines that oper\u00adate beyond the grid and are sup\u00adplied by large diesel gen\u00ader\u00ada\u00adtors, or remote hotels and resorts. In fact, this area includes pret\u00adty much any facil\u00adi\u00adty with spe\u00adcial ener\u00adgy sup\u00adply require\u00adments that the grid is unable to meet\u2014whether because it\u2019s unre\u00adli\u00adable, sub\u00adject to fluc\u00adtu\u00ada\u00adtions, or only able to pro\u00advide ener\u00adgy to a lim\u00adit\u00aded extent.<\/p>\n<p>We also work in large-scale plants. This area includes what are known as grid ser\u00advices, the pro\u00advi\u00adsion of reserve ener\u00adgy, and the bal\u00adanc\u00ading of fluc\u00adtu\u00ada\u00adtions in solar and wind farms with large pow\u00ader out\u00adputs in the three-fig\u00adure megawatt range.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cThe GRIDCON\u00ae PCS allows us to cre\u00adate intel\u00adli\u00adgent stor\u00adage solu\u00adtions that are com\u00adplete\u00adly unique in the mar\u00adket.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h3>Your idea of providing even remote areas with electricity sounds intriguing. Can you give us an example?<\/h3>\n<p>Sure\u2014in the Philip\u00adpines, there is a vil\u00adlage called New Iba\u00adjay, with a pop\u00adulation of 1,600. A diesel gen\u00ader\u00ada\u00adtor was sup\u00adply\u00ading elec\u00adtric\u00adi\u00adty to 280 homes, two schools, and a small health clin\u00adic there for four hours a day, and even then, it was very unre\u00adli\u00adable. So we imple\u00adment\u00aded our Mini ESS in order to meet the dai\u00adly demand for 300 kWh in the vil\u00adlage. Now, the community\u2019s devel\u00adop\u00adment is no longer restrict\u00aded by an arbi\u00adtrary ener\u00adgy lim\u00adit. When a new busi\u00adness idea leads to increased ener\u00adgy demand, our sys\u00adtem can be eas\u00adi\u00adly scaled up to pro\u00advide more ener\u00adgy capac\u00adi\u00adty while main\u00adtain\u00ading the same high-qual\u00adi\u00adty sup\u00adply.<\/p>\n<h3>In terms of growth, what do you have planned for the next few years?<\/h3>\n<p>We want to con\u00adtin\u00adue devel\u00adop\u00ading in all three of our busi\u00adness areas and push ahead with new niche devel\u00adop\u00adments, but they\u2019re not offi\u00adcial yet. We\u2019re also work\u00ading on how we can improve the effi\u00adcien\u00adcy of our bat\u00adtery man\u00adage\u00adment sys\u00adtems. How\u00adev\u00ader, we also want to press ahead with the projects that are more con\u00adcrete, of course.<\/p>\n<p>One of the key loca\u00adtions on which we are focus\u00ading is Mada\u00adgas\u00adcar: It\u2019s very sun\u00adny, the coun\u00adtry is one of the poor\u00adest in the world, and the elec\u00adtri\u00adfi\u00adca\u00adtion rate lies some\u00adwhere between five and sev\u00aden per\u00adcent. At the same time, there are 16,000 set\u00adtle\u00adments with no access to elec\u00adtric\u00adi\u00adty there, so there is a lot of demand. What\u2019s miss\u00ading is funding\u2014so we are build\u00ading up our own funds in order to imple\u00adment these projects effi\u00adcient\u00adly and on a grand scale.
