DEVAL is ahead of the game, being part of a group in which energy production comes entirely from renewable sources. To ensure that voltage levels remain constant following the construction of a new shopping mall, the operator is switching to a VRDT.<\/h5>\n

The Aos\u00adta Val\u00adley is the small\u00adest region in Italy. DEVAL is the largest grid oper\u00ada\u00adtor in the local area and part of the CVA (Com\u00adpag\u00adnia Val\u00addostana delle Acque) Group, which is respon\u00adsi\u00adble for gen\u00ader\u00adat\u00ading ener\u00adgy. The com\u00adpa\u00adny relies on 32 hydro\u00adelec\u00adtric pow\u00ader sta\u00adtions, eight wind farms, and three solar parks to deliv\u00ader a total of three bil\u00adlion kilo\u00adwatt hours of elec\u00adtric\u00adi\u00adty every sin\u00adgle year.<\/p>\n

DEVAL dis\u00adtrib\u00adutes this pow\u00ader via a grid span\u00adning a length of some 4,150 kilo\u00adme\u00adters. Lui\u00adgi Tra\u00adver\u00adso, who is respon\u00adsi\u00adble for main\u00adte\u00adnance and devel\u00adop\u00adment at DEVAL, explains: \u201cWe are cur\u00adrent\u00adly work\u00ading on mod\u00adern\u00adiz\u00ading the grid and test\u00ading new equip\u00adment that will help us to achieve even bet\u00adter ser\u00advice.\u201d This is the case, for exam\u00adple, at the busi\u00adness park in Nus, a small town locat\u00aded close to the region\u2019s cap\u00adi\u00adtal of Aos\u00adta where a new shop\u00adping mall is cur\u00adrent\u00adly under con\u00adstruc\u00adtion. In the area there are sev\u00ader\u00adal solar ener\u00adgy sys\u00adtems boast\u00ading a rel\u00ade\u00advant local capac\u00adi\u00adty.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt became clear to us that our exist\u00ading dis\u00adtri\u00adb\u00adu\u00adtion trans\u00adformer would have dif\u00adfi\u00adcul\u00adty cop\u00ading with the extra volt\u00adage fluc\u00adtu\u00ada\u00adtions. We are work\u00ading on from the under\u00adstand\u00ading that ener\u00adgy con\u00adsump\u00adtion is set to dou\u00adble with\u00adin the space of a year\u201d says Tra\u00adver\u00adso. And that is why DEVAL decid\u00aded to invest in a new 400-kVA trans\u00adformer that takes care of volt\u00adage reg\u00adu\u00adla\u00adtion too. When it came to the tap chang\u00ader, DEVAL opt\u00aded for the ECOTAP\u00ae VPD\u00ae togeth\u00ader with the ECOTAP\u00ae VPD\u00ae Con\u00adtrol con\u00adtroller and the addi\u00adtion\u00adal CONTROL PRO mod\u00adule. Tra\u00adver\u00adso: \u201cWe can now pro\u00advide custom\u00aders with a sta\u00adble grid even when the shops are open.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Over in Rh\u00eame-Notre-Dame in the Italian Alps\u2014as in many other locations\u2014DEVAL had to disconnect power twice a year to manually change the transmission ratio of the transformer. But now that\u2019s all in the past.<\/h5>\n

The tiny vil\u00adlage of Rh\u00eames-Notre-Dame, locat\u00aded in the Aos\u00adta region and home to 250 peo\u00adple, is sit\u00adu\u00adat\u00aded in a pic\u00adturesque val\u00adley. In fact, it\u2019s the very def\u00adi\u00adn\u00adi\u00adtion of \u201coff the beat\u00aden track.\u201d And it\u2019s exact\u00adly this tran\u00adquil\u00adi\u00adty and seclu\u00adsion that draws in hun\u00addreds of tourists. Dur\u00ading peak vaca\u00adtion sea\u00adson, the num\u00adber of inhab\u00adi\u00adtants shoots up and so does the demand for elec\u00adtric\u00adi\u00adty, which comes from sev\u00ader\u00adal hydro\u00adelec\u00adtric plants and some pri\u00advate solar ener\u00adgy sys\u00adtems.<\/p>\n

There\u00adfore, pow\u00ader gen\u00ader\u00ada\u00adtion is as up and down as the demand. After all, there is a great deal more hydropow\u00ader once the snow has melt\u00aded away than after a long hot sum\u00admer. Until just recent\u00adly, grid oper\u00ada\u00adtor DEVAL had to inter\u00advene on a reg\u00adu\u00adlar basis for this rea\u00adson, disconnect\u00ading the pow\u00ader and man\u00adu\u00adal\u00adly chang\u00ading the trans\u00admis\u00adsion ratio of the trans\u00adformer to com\u00adpen\u00adsate for fluc\u00adtu\u00ada\u00adtions in the volt\u00adage to the extent pos\u00adsi\u00adble.<\/p>\n

Now this is in the past: \u201cWe decid\u00aded to replace the old trans\u00adformer with a new 250-kilo\u00advolt-ampere volt\u00adage reg\u00adu\u00adla\u00adtion dis\u00adtri\u00adb\u00adu\u00adtion trans\u00adformer to test a new solu\u00adtion to ensure our cus\u00adtomers a bet\u00adter ser\u00advice with\u00adout any need to man\u00adu\u00adal\u00adly dis\u00adcon\u00adnect the pow\u00ader\u201d says Lui\u00adgi Tra\u00adver\u00adso. As far as tap chang\u00ading is con\u00adcerned, DEVAL decid\u00aded to imple\u00adment the same solu\u00adtion as in Nus: the ECOTAP\u00ae VPD\u00ae Con\u00adtrol con\u00adtroller and the addi\u00adtion\u00adal CONTROL PRO mod\u00adule. \u201cThis allows us to mon\u00adi\u00adtor the switch\u00ading oper\u00ada\u00adtions from our con\u00adtrol room. So far, we have observed 40 switch\u00ading oper\u00ada\u00adtions per day on aver\u00adage. The volt\u00adage is con\u00adstant now,\u201d says Tra\u00adver\u00adso.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n
