The silence is only bro\u00adken by the Baltic Sea gen\u00adtly lap\u00adping against the side of the police ship that mea\u00adsures almost 66&nbsp;meters in length and ten&nbsp;meters in width. Almost the full crew is stand\u00ading at the ship\u2019s rail in their blue uni\u00adforms. The offi\u00adcers look to their col\u00adleagues wait\u00ading patient\u00adly on the quay for their shift on board.<\/p>\n<p>They have been at sea for six days, patrolling the 140-nau\u00adti\u00adcal-mile coastal stretch between the Flens\u00adburg Firth and Buk\u00adspitze cape in the Bay of Meck\u00adlen\u00adburg. Fol\u00adlow\u00ading a 360-degree turn, the Bayreuth slow\u00adly approach\u00ades the quay wall. The lines are sent fly\u00ading through the air and the ship is secure\u00adly moored up by 10 a.m. Right on time. Now it\u2019s time for the crews to change over and pro\u00advi\u00adsions to be restocked for the next few days at sea.<br>\n<br>\nCom\u00admand\u00ading Offi\u00adcer Frank&nbsp;Rogat\u00adty can usu\u00adal\u00adly be found stand\u00ading up on his bridge. He has been travel\u00ading to sea for the Ger\u00adman fed\u00ader\u00adal police force since 2002. He says: \u201cWe are one of three coast\u00adguard ships that cov\u00ader the North and Baltic Seas.\u201d It is their job to per\u00adform checks on ships cross\u00ading over inter\u00adna\u00adtion\u00adal sea bor\u00adders, emer\u00adgency res\u00adcue oper\u00ada\u00adtions at sea, har\u00adbor inspec\u00adtions, and stan\u00addard traf\u00adfic checks, just like the ones per\u00adformed by offi\u00adcers on land. (\u00a9 Jens Umbach)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Sum\u00admer is the busiest time of year, as com\u00admer\u00adcial ships have to share the water with motor\u00adboats, yachts, and stand-up pad\u00addle boards. The crew is made up of 14 police offi\u00adcers, who work in three shifts to ensure that the coast\u00adguard patrol is always in action. Some\u00adtimes the crew is even big\u00adger.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have to be out\u00adside no mat\u00adter what the wea\u00adther is like and we need to be able to rely ful\u00adly on the tech\u00adnol\u00ado\u00adgy we have on board\u2014especially when we need to maneu\u00adver quick\u00adly when vis\u00adi\u00adbil\u00adi\u00adty is poor and the sea is rough,\u201d says Rogat\u00adty, point\u00ading at the on-board equip\u00adment. \u201cThis is a com\u00adplex sys\u00adtem. All the elec\u00adtri\u00adcal com\u00adpo\u00adnents have to work per\u00adfect\u00adly in sync.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>Problems with harmonics<\/h2>\n<p>This is exact\u00adly the prob\u00adlem that they were encoun\u00adter\u00ading two&nbsp;years ago. The crew\u2019s cell phone charg\u00aders kept break\u00ading, the dish\u00adwash\u00ader and individ\u00adual com\u00adput\u00aders were reg\u00adu\u00adlar\u00adly out of action, and key func\u00adtions per\u00adformed by the elec\u00adtron\u00adic equip\u00adment in the bridge were being dis\u00adrupt\u00aded.<\/p>\n<p>It took quite some time until the cause of these issues was iden\u00adti\u00adfied. The cul\u00adprit was actu\u00adal\u00adly a few floors beneath the crew in the ship\u2019s bel\u00adly. It was the fre\u00adquen\u00adcy con\u00advert\u00ader of the ship\u2019s elec\u00adtric engine. Head Machine Oper\u00ada\u00adtor Volk\u00ader Uhlen\u00adbrock shouts above the noise com\u00ading from the engine room: \u201cWe kept notic\u00ading inter\u00adfer\u00adence once we had hit a cer\u00adtain speed. This led us to the idea that har\u00admon\u00adics could be inter\u00adfer\u00ading with the oth\u00ader elec\u00adtri\u00adcal com\u00adpo\u00adnents. We always have around 50 elec\u00adtri\u00adcal instal\u00adla\u00adtions on board.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The oth\u00ader Ger\u00adman police force ships were expe\u00adri\u00adenc\u00ading the same phe\u00adnom\u00ade\u00adnon. While each of the ships still has a diesel engine, this is only real\u00adly intend\u00aded for use in emer\u00adgen\u00adcies or when real\u00adly high speeds are need\u00aded. For stan\u00addard oper\u00ada\u00adtion, the elec\u00adtric engine is used since it con\u00adsumes less fuel, pro\u00adduces few\u00ader emis\u00adsions, is qui\u00adet, and doesn\u2019t dis\u00adrupt the crew\u2019s sleep. And the main\u00adte\u00adnance costs are low\u00ader when the diesel engine is used less often. \u201cTwo diesel gen\u00ader\u00ada\u00adtors sup\u00adply the pow\u00ader required for the dri\u00adve and on-board elec\u00adtri\u00adcal equip\u00adment, with a con\u00adtin\u00adu\u00adous out\u00adput of 450&nbsp;kilo\u00adwatts each,\u201d says Uhlen\u00adbrock.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cWe can now focus all of our atten\u00adtion on our police work with\u00adout hav\u00ading to wor\u00adry about the on-board elec\u00adtri\u00adcal equip\u00adment.\u201d<cite>Frank Rogat\u00adty, Com\u00admand\u00ading Offi\u00adcer of the Bayreuth<\/cite><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>As the issues with the pow\u00ader sup\u00adply on board showed no signs of stop\u00adping, the Ger\u00adman police force decid\u00aded to look for a solu\u00adtion. And Rein\u00adhausen had just what they were look\u00ading for. Thomas Z\u00f6ll\u00adner, who works at Pow\u00ader Qual\u00adi\u00adty, is an expert in ship tech\u00adnol\u00ado\u00adgy so he was able to help: \u201cThe prob\u00adlem with iso\u00adlat\u00aded grids is that they have a much low\u00ader short-cir\u00adcuit capac\u00adi\u00adty com\u00adpared to grids on shore.<\/p>\n<p>This means that the tech\u00adnol\u00ado\u00adgy is more like\u00adly to suf\u00adfer from interfer\u00adence on the whole.\u201d The Ger\u00adman police force is by no means alone in expe\u00adri\u00adenc\u00ading these prob\u00adlems. Ship\u00adyards are rely\u00ading more and more on elec\u00adtric engines, while the use of elec\u00adtron\u00adic equip\u00adment installed on board is also on the rise. This is also true for super yachts and spe\u00adcial-pur\u00adpose ships such as cable lay\u00aders and suc\u00adtion dredgers.<\/p>\n<h2>Fighting Harmonics<\/h2>\n<p>Z\u00f6ll\u00adner explains: \u201cUnpleas\u00adant net\u00adwork per\u00adtur\u00adba\u00adtions caused by har\u00admon\u00adics is a famil\u00adiar phe\u00adnom\u00ade\u00adnon with\u00adin the auto\u00admo\u00adtive sec\u00adtor where dis\u00adrup\u00adtion to the fac\u00adto\u00adry pow\u00ader sup\u00adply can crip\u00adple the entire pro\u00adduc\u00adtion process.\u201d To avoid this, grid oper\u00ada\u00adtors have been using active fil\u00adters for some time now. \u201cThat\u2019s how we can elim\u00adi\u00adnate prob\u00adlem\u00adat\u00adic har\u00admon\u00adics. The active fil\u00adters in our GRIDCON\u00ae series auto\u00admat\u00adi\u00adcal\u00adly detect lim\u00adit-val\u00adue devi\u00ada\u00adtions and emit oppos\u00ading waves to bal\u00adance out any such fluc\u00adtu\u00ada\u00adtions. (\u00a9 Jens Umbach)<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>In order to prove that har\u00admon\u00adics were in fact to blame for the prob\u00adlems and to tai\u00adlor the active fil\u00adters to the require\u00adments on board the ship, the Pow\u00ader Qual\u00adi\u00adty expert took a lot of read\u00adings and mea\u00adsure\u00adments over sev\u00ader\u00adal days. \u201cWe basi\u00adcal\u00adly per\u00adformed an ECG on the on-board elec\u00adtri\u00adcal sys\u00adtem,\u201d explains Z\u00f6ll\u00adner. The results were aston\u00adish\u00ading! While the stan\u00addard allows a pro\u00adpor\u00adtion of har\u00admon\u00adics up to eight per\u00adcent (with five per\u00adcent as the rec\u00adom\u00admend\u00aded val\u00adue), up to 14 per\u00adcent was mea\u00adsured on the ship<\/p>\n<p>Z\u00f6ll\u00adner deter\u00admined that the indus\u00adtrial GRIDCON\u00ae ACF would be the ide\u00adal fil\u00adter solu\u00adtion here. But it wasn\u2019t pos\u00adsi\u00adble for the active fil\u00adter to be installed in the same way as it is on dry land: \u201cThe sway\u00ading and vibra\u00adtions on the ship could dam\u00adage the tech\u00adnol\u00ado\u00adgy. And so we had to install vibra\u00adtion absorbers under\u00adneath the con\u00adtrol cab\u00adi\u00adnet,\u201d says Z\u00f6ll\u00adner. Once the nec\u00ades\u00adsary tests had been passed, all three of the Ger\u00adman police force\u2019s ships were fit\u00adted with the Rein\u00adhausen fil\u00adter solu\u00adtion.<\/p>\n<h2>Full Steam Ahead<\/h2>\n<p>The GRIDCON\u00ae ACF has been in use on the Bayreuth for two years now. Head Machine Oper\u00ada\u00adtor Uhlen\u00adbrock is delight\u00aded with the results: \u201cAll the prob\u00adlems we were hav\u00ading have dis\u00adap\u00adpeared. And I don\u2019t have to do a thing because the fil\u00adter is ful\u00adly auto\u00admat\u00adic. The sys\u00adtem sim\u00adply goes into stand\u00adby when\u00adev\u00ader we turn the engine off.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Com\u00admand\u00ading Offi\u00adcer Rogat\u00adty is just as hap\u00adpy: \u201cWe can now focus all of our atten\u00adtion on our police work with\u00adout hav\u00ading to wor\u00adry about the on-board elec\u00adtri\u00adcal equip\u00adment.\u201d Both of these expe\u00adri\u00adenced sea\u00adfar\u00aders have now end\u00aded their shifts and hand\u00aded every\u00adthing over to the next crew. The Bayreuth is ready to set off again by 2 p.m. It departs slow\u00adly and heads back out onto the Baltic Sea as qui\u00adet\u00adly as it arrived.<\/p>\n<div class=\"wpcmsdev-box\">\n<div class=\"box-content\">\n<h5>REINHAUSEN INSIDE<\/h5>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.reinhausen.com\/gridcon\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">GRIDCON\u00ae ACF active fil\u00adter solu\u00adtion<\/a> is ide\u00adal for a wide range of appli\u00adca\u00adtions.
