How are you sup\u00adposed to get to them with the equip\u00adment for a par\u00adtial dis\u00adcharge test? This ques\u00adtion is par\u00adtic\u00adu\u00adlar\u00adly per\u00adti\u00adnent when it comes to wind tur\u00adbines: Whether the tur\u00adbines are on land or out at sea, the trans\u00adform\u00aders are often locat\u00aded in the nacelle\u2014sometimes over one hun\u00addred meters up in the air.<\/p>\n<p>As a senior con\u00adsul\u00adtant with respon\u00adsi\u00adbil\u00adi\u00adty for on-site par\u00adtial dis\u00adcharge tests on trans\u00adform\u00aders, Frank Busse from the IPH test insti\u00adtute in Berlin is all too famil\u00adiar with this prob\u00adlem: \u201cFor a long time, there was only one way of pro\u00advid\u00ading the nec\u00ades\u00adsary test volt\u00adage for the mea\u00adsure\u00adment: motor-gen\u00ader\u00ada\u00adtor sets.\u201d How\u00adev\u00ader, these devices are imprac\u00adti\u00adcal, heavy, and so large that they fill an entire truck. At dis\u00adtances of up to 30 meters, cables can still be used to reach the trans\u00adformer.<br>\n<br>\n<\/p><figure id=\"attachment_5049\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-5049\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-5049 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/onload.reinhausen.com\/de\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/25\/2019\/12\/Highvolt-Testsystem.jpg\" alt width=\"600\" height=\"800\"><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-5049\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">All sorts of trans\u00adform\u00aders can be test\u00aded thanks to the portable test source!<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cAny\u00adthing beyond that pos\u00ades a real tech\u00adni\u00adcal chal\u00adlenge. There was no prac\u00adti\u00adcal solu\u00adtion for wind tur\u00adbines on land, and as for those offshore\u2014no chance. So it was essen\u00adtial\u00adly impos\u00adsi\u00adble to car\u00adry out on-site par\u00adtial dis\u00adcharge tests for trans\u00adform\u00aders in these inac\u00adces\u00adsi\u00adble places.\u201d As a result, they sim\u00adply weren\u2019t test\u00aded. That was a cause of con\u00adcern for Busse, since trans\u00adform\u00aders in wind tur\u00adbines age rel\u00ada\u00adtive\u00adly quick\u00adly due to the impact of the mechan\u00adi\u00adcal vibra\u00adtions of the rotors, light\u00adning strikes, fre\u00adquent load changes, and the high num\u00adber of switch\u00ading oper\u00ada\u00adtions.<\/p>\n<p>Wind tur\u00adbines are gen\u00ader\u00adal\u00adly desig\u00adn\u00aded for a ser\u00advice life of around 20 years. As the wind pow\u00ader boom began in the 1990s, Busse was aware that tur\u00adbine oper\u00ada\u00adtors would soon be in urgent need of infor\u00adma\u00adtion about the con\u00addi\u00adtion of their trans\u00adform\u00aders. \u201cPre\u00advi\u00adous\u00adly, the only option would be to get the trans\u00adformer out of the nacelle using a crane or crane ship, take it to a test\u00ading lab\u00adoratory, test it for 15 min\u00adutes and then do the whole thing in reverse to get it back in place.\u2014No one\u2019s going to do that!\u2014It\u2019s ridicu\u00adlous! There must be an eas\u00adi\u00ader way!\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>A Handy Portable Solution<\/h2>\n<p>Busse took his idea to var\u00adi\u00adous test equip\u00adment man\u00adu\u00adfac\u00adtur\u00aders: \u201cThe test source had to be com\u00adpact and transport\u00adable\u2014and three-phase. That\u2019s the only way to ensure the test is ful\u00adly com\u00adpa\u00adra\u00adble with an accep\u00adtance test in a trans\u00adformer test facility\u2014single-phase isn\u2019t much use to us. HIGHVOLT was the only one that could do it.\u201d The high-volt\u00adage test\u00ading tech\u00adnol\u00ado\u00adgy spe\u00adcial\u00adists from Dres\u00adden have accu\u00admu\u00adlat\u00aded a wealth of exper\u00adtise regard\u00ading con\u00advert\u00ader-based test equip\u00adment for pow\u00ader trans\u00adform\u00aders.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cWe can man\u00adage two off\u00adshore tur\u00adbines a day if we\u2019re well organized\u2014more if it\u2019s on land.\u201d<cite>Frank Busse from the IPH test insti\u00adtute in Berlin<\/cite><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>They were there\u00adfore able to devel\u00adop a com\u00adpact volt\u00adage source that fits into three tool\u00adbox-sized cas\u00ades. Two peo\u00adple can trans\u00adport the cas\u00ades by hand. This solu\u00adtion can be used for induced volt\u00adage test\u00ading on site and, when com\u00adbined with cou\u00adpling capac\u00adi\u00adtors and mea\u00adsur\u00ading devices, also makes it pos\u00adsi\u00adble to car\u00adry out the three-phase par\u00adtial dis\u00adcharge test\u00ading that Busse was so keen to achieve.<\/p>\n<p>So how does the equip\u00adment get up to the trans\u00adformer? Wind tur\u00adbines have a small load\u00ading crane in the nacelle. The HIGHVOLT test sources are secure\u00adly packed in spe\u00adcial plas\u00adtic bags and are trans\u00adport\u00aded up in two quick crane trips. Busse explains: \u201cWe can man\u00adage two off\u00adshore tur\u00adbines a day if we\u2019re well organized\u2014more if it\u2019s on land.\u201d This is good news for tur\u00adbine oper\u00ada\u00adtors, but Busse is set\u00adting his sights beyond that: \u201cThere are trans\u00adform\u00aders in all kinds of inac\u00adces\u00adsi\u00adble places. Just recent\u00adly, we car\u00adried out test\u00ading in a sub\u00adway shaft in Ham\u00adburg and in the base\u00adment of a fac\u00adto\u00adry hall. That nev\u00ader would have been pos\u00adsi\u00adble with a motor gen\u00ader\u00ada\u00adtor set.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>Testing Reduces Insurance Premiums<\/h2>\n<p>Giv\u00aden that it was pre\u00advi\u00adous\u00adly impos\u00adsi\u00adble to car\u00adry out par\u00adtial dis\u00adcharge tests on inac\u00adces\u00adsi\u00adble trans\u00adform\u00aders and things still gen\u00ader\u00adal\u00adly worked out all right, why should oper\u00ada\u00adtors now decide to get their trans\u00adform\u00aders test\u00aded? \u201cThe typ\u00adi\u00adcal case is that a trans\u00adformer fails and then the oper\u00ada\u00adtor con\u00adtacts me ask\u00ading \u2019What about my oth\u00ader trans\u00adform\u00aders? Do I need to wor\u00adry about them?\u2019\u201d says Busse.<\/p>\n<p>A fail\u00adure like that can get expen\u00adsive quick\u00adly: Your wind tur\u00adbine isn\u2019t run\u00adning, sub\u00adway trains are at a stand\u00adstill, pro\u00adduc\u00adtion in an indus\u00adtri\u00adal com\u00adpa\u00adny grinds to a halt for days on end. Often, how\u00adev\u00ader, it\u2019s the insur\u00adance companies\u2014those who will bear the costs of the down\u00adtime once the dra\u00adma has been resolved\u2014who ulti\u00admate\u00adly tip the scales in favor of test\u00ading. \u201cThe insur\u00adance com\u00adpa\u00adny will ask the oper\u00ada\u00adtor \u2019What will you do to make sure the same thing doesn\u2019t hap\u00adpen in future?\u2019 And if the answer is \u2019There\u2019s noth\u00ading I can do\u2019, the pre\u00admi\u00adums will increase.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_5052\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-5052\" style=\"width: 800px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-5052 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/onload.reinhausen.com\/de\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/25\/2019\/12\/Mobile-Checkbox-Highvolt.jpg\" alt width=\"800\" height=\"533\"><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-5052\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The test source from HIGHVOLT fits in three cas\u00ades.(\u00a9 Hol\u00adger Sch\u00fctze)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>With reg\u00adu\u00adlar par\u00adtial dis\u00adcharge tests, on the oth\u00ader hand, oper\u00ada\u00adtors can prove that every\u00adthing is work\u00ading prop\u00ader\u00adly and that they are imple\u00adment\u00ading a pre\u00adven\u00adtive replace\u00adment strat\u00ade\u00adgy where nec\u00ades\u00adsary. \u201cIn that case, the pre\u00admiums will stay where they are,\u201d says Busse. When tak\u00ading out new insur\u00adance poli\u00adcies on exist\u00ading equip\u00adment, oper\u00adators can also ben\u00ade\u00adfit from a sub\u00adstan\u00adtial reduc\u00adtion in the pre\u00admi\u00adum if they car\u00adry out reg\u00adu\u00adlar test\u00ading.<\/p>\n<p>Busse is also used to receiv\u00ading calls when the manufacturer\u2019s guar\u00adan\u00adtee on the trans\u00adform\u00aders expires and the oper\u00ada\u00adtor is sud\u00adden\u00adly liable for every\u00adthing. \u201cThat\u2019s when they want us to con\u00adfirm that every\u00adthing is still work\u00ading prop\u00ader\u00adly. With our tests, we can give them peace of mind.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>Definite Preference for Portable<\/h2>\n<p>The only one who is not hap\u00adpy about HIGHVOLT\u2019s com\u00adpact test sources is IPH\u2019s bulky motor-gen\u00ader\u00ada\u00adtor set. \u201cSince we start\u00aded work\u00ading with the test source, the motor-gen\u00ader\u00ada\u00adtor set has been gath\u00ader\u00ading dust in the cor\u00adner. We pre\u00adfer to use the test source even if there is no prob\u00adlem access\u00ading the trans\u00adform\u00aders. The portable option is always bet\u00adter.\u201d The motor-gen\u00ader\u00ada\u00adtor set only sees the light of day now for very spe\u00adcif\u00adic tasks. \u201cIt\u2019s prob\u00ada\u00adbly only about five per\u00adcent of cas\u00ades.
