What is going on within the US energy sector at the moment?<\/h3>\n

The coun\u00adtry is vast, span\u00adning ten mil\u00adlion square kilo\u00adme\u00adters. As you can imag\u00adine, it is an enor\u00admous task to keep up the infra\u00adstruc\u00adture. While there are major met\u00adro\u00adpol\u00adi\u00adtan areas on the east and west coasts, there are also huge stretch\u00ades of land that are only sparse\u00adly pop\u00adu\u00adlat\u00aded. But pow\u00ader is need\u00aded every\u00adwhere.

\nThe out\u00addat\u00aded tech\u00adnol\u00ado\u00adgy in the pri\u00adma\u00adry sub\u00adsta\u00adtions is the main chal\u00adlenge to be faced. Here in the USA, we have some 200,000 pow\u00ader trans\u00adform\u00aders with an aver\u00adage age of around 40 years. More than 2,000 new trans\u00adform\u00aders are installed every year, but there is a lot of old equip\u00adment already in place. So a great deal of invest\u00adment will be need\u00ad\u00aded in the com\u00ading years.<\/p>\n

How can Maschinenfabrik Reinhausen help to ease the situation in the United States?<\/h3>\n

On the one hand, we pro\u00adduce on-load tap-chang\u00aders that address the spe\u00adcif\u00adic require\u00adments in the USA. But we also offer an exten\u00adsive ser\u00advice port\u00adfo\u00adlio includ\u00ading the mod\u00adern\u00adiza\u00adtion of trans\u00adform\u00aders as well as the instal\u00adla\u00adtion and test\u00ading of new ones. When a cus\u00adtomer places an order for a new trans\u00adformer, it is sup\u00adplied by the man\u00adufacturer along with sep\u00ada\u00adrate add-on parts.<\/p>\n

This is where we come in! We take care of the entire instal\u00adla\u00adtion process and inte\u00adgrate bush\u00adings, cool\u00aders, fans, and con\u00adtrol box\u00ades. This is what we call \u201cdress\u00ading\u201d the trans\u00adformer. Final\u00adly, we take care of the oil pro\u00adcess\u00ading and the vac\u00adu\u00adum fill\u00ading of the trans\u00adformer and then com\u00adplete all nec\u00ades\u00adsary field tests. As you can see, we pro\u00advide a full ser\u00advice so that the cus\u00adtomer doesn\u2019t have to wor\u00adry about a thing.<\/p>\n

What does the modernization process entail?<\/h3>\n

When we are tasked with tak\u00ading care of mod\u00adern\u00adiza\u00adtion, we gen\u00ader\u00adal\u00adly have to drain the trans\u00adformer oil first. We can then pro\u00adceed to com\u00adplete sev\u00ader\u00adal tasks, such as replac\u00ading the tap chang\u00ad\u00ader regard\u00adless of which man\u00adu\u00adfac\u00adtur\u00ader sup\u00adplied it in the first place. We also install new bush\u00adings, regas\u00adket the trans\u00adformer, replace radi\u00ada\u00adtors and fans, valves, indi\u00adca\u00adtion instru\u00adments, and so on.<\/p>\n

Once all of the mod\u00adern\u00adiza\u00adtion steps are com\u00adplete, we fill the trans\u00adformer back up with oil under vac\u00adu\u00adum. Some of our cus\u00adtomers also want to dig\u00adi\u00adtal\u00adize their trans\u00adform\u00aders so that they can keep an eye on the rel\u00ade\u00advant data online. Unfor\u00adtu\u00adnate\u00adly, this isn\u2019t always an option\u2013\u2009espe\u00adcial\u00adly with old\u00ader trans\u00adform\u00aders. But we do try to offer this ser\u00advice where pos\u00adsi\u00adble.<\/p>\n

How do you know that it\u2019s worth investing?<\/h3>\n

It real\u00adly depends on the resid\u00adual \u201ctrans\u00adformer life.\u201d Tem\u00adper\u00ada\u00adture degrades the paper insu\u00adla\u00adtion, which is the main indi\u00adca\u00adtor of resid\u00adual trans\u00adformer life. As long as the insu\u00adla\u00adtion is in good con\u00addi\u00adtion, mod\u00adern\u00adiza\u00adtion is a viable option to bring the trans\u00adformer into a reli\u00adable con\u00addi\u00adtion for the next 20 \u2014 30 years.<\/p>\n

But of course it also depends on cur\u00adrent mar\u00adket con\u00addi\u00adtions for new trans\u00adform\u00aders such as price and lead time. In gen\u00ader\u00adal, mod\u00adernization is attrac\u00adtive for medi\u00adum and large pow\u00ader trans\u00adform\u00aders.<\/p>\n

So what\u2019s the point of modernizing?<\/h3>\n

The fact that you can wait for up to 24 months for a new trans\u00adformer to be deliv\u00adered is obvi\u00adous\u00adly an impor\u00adtant fac\u00adtor. Mod\u00adern\u00adiza\u00adtion can be the much quick\u00ader option. Not to men\u00adtion that mod\u00adern\u00adiza\u00adtion is often pushed for\u00adward as a way of guar\u00adan\u00adtee\u00ading reli\u00ada\u00adbil\u00adi\u00adty. For exam\u00adple, ener\u00adgy sup\u00adpli\u00aders have to offer a cer\u00adtain lev\u00adel of depend\u00adabil\u00adi\u00adty in line with their legal respon\u00adsi\u00adbil\u00adi\u00adties and legal man\u00addates.<\/p>\n

Who are your customers?<\/h3>\n

Trans\u00adformer man\u00adu\u00adfac\u00adtur\u00aders are, of course, one of our main cus\u00adtomer groups when look\u00ading at new instal\u00adla\u00adtions. Then we have ener\u00adgy sup\u00adpli\u00aders, which include some major com\u00adpa\u00adnies like South\u00adern Cal\u00adi\u00adfor\u00adnia Edi\u00adson with some 15 mil\u00adlion cus\u00adtomers and Do\u00adminion Vir\u00adginia Pow\u00ader with 7.5 mil\u00adlion cus\u00adtomers. They reach capac\u00adi\u00adty lim\u00adits when it comes to ser\u00advices like main\u00adte\u00adnance of their own trans\u00adform\u00aders, so they use exter\u00adnal providers like us to help them out.<\/p>\n

With the extreme\u00adly high num\u00adber of oper\u00ada\u00adtions of their OLTCs, in some cas\u00ades 100 to 1,000 times high\u00ader than for util\u00adi\u00adties, a more inva\u00adsive inspec\u00adtion \/ main\u00adte\u00adnance need aris\u00ades, which means enter\u00ading the main tank. Here we offer a turn-key main\u00adte\u00adnance solu\u00adtion.<\/p>\n

How is the service department set up in the USA?<\/h3>\n

Togeth\u00ader with our sis\u00adter com\u00adpa\u00adnies ESS and ATSI we have a fleet made up of 24 ser\u00advice trucks and oil pro\u00adcess\u00ading rigs. We use the lat\u00adter to process thou\u00adsands of liters of oil, which involves dry\u00ading and degassing it, and then fill\u00ading it back into the trans\u00adformer under vac\u00adu\u00adum. They are a bit like dial\u00ady\u00adsis machines used to clean blood. The fleet is based in Char\u00adlotte, from where they are typ\u00adi\u00adcal\u00adly dis\u00adpatched. Two mem\u00adbers of staff are typ\u00adi\u00adcal\u00adly assigned to each oil rig and it can take a few days for them to arrive at our cus\u00adtomers\u2019 premis\u00ades.<\/p>\n

Gen\u00ader\u00adal\u00adly speak\u00ading, our tech\u00adni\u00adcians are spread out across the USA, with our peo\u00adple based in Alaba\u00adma, Mis\u00adsouri, Flori\u00adda, North and South Car\u00adoli\u00adna, and oth\u00ader states. They then dri\u00adve or fly to where the work is.<\/p>\n

What is the biggest challenge you face?<\/h3>\n

If you want to be com\u00adpet\u00adi\u00adtive in offer\u00ading this type of ser\u00advice across such a vast coun\u00adtry, it\u2019s impor\u00adtant to posi\u00adtion staff and equip\u00adment strategic\u00adally so that noth\u00ading is ever too far away from the cus\u00adtomers. That\u2019s no mean feat here in the US.<\/p>\n

But we promise a \u201cnation\u00adwide\u201d ser\u00advice so we go wher\u00adev\u00ader there\u2019s work for us to do! Of course, this can only work effec\u00adtively if we stay on top of our ros\u00adters and coor\u00addi\u00adnate sched\u00adules and work loca\u00adtions to per\u00adfec\u00adtion. In addi\u00adtion, we have to keep adding to our fleet of trucks and oil rigs.<\/p>\n

What are your plans for the next few years?<\/h3>\n

We will con\u00adtin\u00adue to expand our net\u00adwork and equip\u00adment as demon\u00adstrat\u00aded by our lat\u00adest order for a new ser\u00advice truck and oil rig for the fleet. Fur\u00adther\u00admore, we are on the look\u00adout for our next crew mem\u00adbers. But we aren\u2019t going to stop there\u2009\u2013\u2009more orders will fol\u00adlow and we will need to add to our ser\u00advice team accord\u00ading\u00adly.<\/p>\n

Reinhausen Heads West<\/h5>\n

Maschi\u00adnen\u00adfab\u00adrik Rein\u00adhausen took the leap and head\u00aded across the pond to the land of oppor\u00adtu\u00adni\u00adty back in 1987. Here we have cen\u00adtral\u00adized our Trans\u00adformer Ser\u00advices Group and this is our home base, where we also per\u00adform main\u00adte\u00adnance on the ser\u00advice trucks, oil rigs and oth\u00ader equip\u00adment which we use to ser\u00advice our cus\u00adtomers\u00b4 trans\u00adform\u00aders. This type of ser\u00advice rep\u00adre\u00adsents a grow\u00ading mar\u00adket for us in the Unit\u00aded States.
