This is because an increase in load caus\u00ades the insulat\u00ading medi\u00adum in the trans\u00adformer to heat up and expand, push\u00ading the air in the expan\u00adsion tank out into the atmos\u00adphere. When the oil cools down again, it con\u00adtracts and draws in the out\u00adside air.<\/p>\n<p>Dehy\u00addrat\u00ading breathers are used to make sure that no mois\u00adture gets into the insu\u00adlat\u00ading medi\u00adum when the trans\u00adformer breathes in. Each trans\u00adformer most\u00adly has a min\u00adi\u00admum of two breathers: one for the oil cir\u00adcuit in the tap chang\u00ader, the big\u00adger ones for the trans\u00adformer tank. The sub\u00adstance that elim\u00adi\u00adnates the mois\u00adture is called sil\u00adi\u00adca gel. Thanks to its water-absorb\u00ading prop\u00ader\u00adties, it is also used as a des\u00adic\u00adcant in oth\u00ader applications\u2014inside the pack\u00adag\u00ading of mois\u00adture-sen\u00adsi\u00adtive elec\u00adtron\u00adics, for exam\u00adple.<br>\n<br>\nAs its abil\u00adi\u00adty to absorb water is lim\u00adit\u00aded, the sil\u00adi\u00adca gel in con\u00adven\u00adtion\u00adal dehy\u00addrat\u00ading breathers has to be replaced and dis\u00adposed of reg\u00adularly\u2014around two to three times a year on aver\u00adage. This fre\u00adquen\u00adcy increas\u00ades fur\u00adther as more renew\u00adable pow\u00ader is fed into the grid, as this means the trans\u00adformer has to work under high load con\u00addi\u00adtions more often. (\u00a9 Alexan\u00adder Neu)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Karl-Heinz Jenal, who works as an oper\u00ada\u00adtional super\u00advi\u00adsor at Saar\u00adland-based ener\u00adgy sup\u00adpli\u00ader VSE Verteil\u00adnetz GmbH and is respon\u00adsi\u00adble for main\u00adtain\u00ading the equip\u00adment, explains: \u201cWe have 56 high-volt\u00adage instal\u00adla\u00adtions in our grid, each of which con\u00adtains two trans\u00adform\u00aders. Some\u00adone has to go out to each one on a reg\u00adu\u00adlar basis to check whether the des\u00adic\u00adcant is still work\u00ading prop\u00ader\u00adly. Over the course of a year, the time spent on main\u00adte\u00adnance real\u00adly adds up. And then you have to fac\u00adtor in the met\u00adric ton of sil\u00adi\u00adca gel that we have to dis\u00adpose of and replace.\u201d At least, that\u2019s how things used to be.<\/p>\n<p>For VSE Verteil\u00adnetz GmbH, these tasks and the asso\u00adci\u00adat\u00aded costs will soon be a thing of the past, as all of its trans\u00adform\u00aders have been fit\u00adted with the main\u00adte\u00adnance-free MTRAB\u00ae dehy\u00addrat\u00ading breather from Rein\u00adhausen sub\u00adsidiary MESSKO. The breather still uses sil\u00adi\u00adca gel, but unlike the pre\u00advi\u00adous tech\u00adnol\u00ado\u00adgy, the MTRAB\u00ae is able to regen\u00ader\u00adate itself. Sen\u00adsors mea\u00adsure the mois\u00adture in the des\u00adic\u00adcant. An algo\u00adrithm stored in the con\u00adtrol sys\u00adtem eval\u00adu\u00adates these mea\u00adsure\u00adments and an elec\u00adtric heat\u00ading sys\u00adtem is acti\u00advat\u00aded auto\u00admat\u00adi\u00adcal\u00adly when the sat\u00adu\u00adra\u00adtion point is reached. After around two and a half hours, the sil\u00adi\u00adca gel is dry again.<\/p>\n<h2>A Cost-Effective Solution<\/h2>\n<p>VSE Verteil\u00adnetz GmbH first used the MTRAB\u00ae in 2008, when it was adding a new trans\u00adformer to the fleet. Jens Leinen\u00adbach, head of grid oper\u00ada\u00adtions, recalls: \u201cWe were try\u00ading to work out how we could cut down on main\u00adte\u00adnance in the long term. That\u2019s why we were keen to try out a new prod\u00aduct and see whether it proved its worth in prac\u00adtice.\u201d And the MTRAB\u00ae def\u00adi\u00adnite\u00adly passed the test. We delib\u00ader\u00adate\u00adly opt\u00aded for a qual\u00adi\u00adty product\u2014something that is not offered by many man\u00adu\u00adfac\u00adtur\u00aders on the mar\u00adket. The fact that we have been work\u00ading with MESSKO and Rein\u00adhausen for many years also played a key role in the deci\u00adsion. Hav\u00ading a part\u00adner that we know and trust is impor\u00adtant to us,\u201d explains Leinen\u00adbach.<\/p>\n<p>As an addi\u00adtion\u00adal advan\u00adtage, the MTRAB\u00ae dehy\u00addrat\u00ading breathers can be net\u00adworked so that error mes\u00adsages are sent straight to the con\u00adtrol room. And even if the elec\u00adtron\u00adics sys\u00adtem fails at some point, the MTRAB\u00ae still func\u00adtions as a con\u00adven\u00adtion\u00adal dehy\u00addrat\u00ading breather. The com\u00adpa\u00adny has yet to see a sin\u00adgle error mes\u00adsage: \u201cOur expe\u00adri\u00adence has been entire\u00adly pos\u00adi\u00adtive so far. We haven\u2019t had to wor\u00adry about a thing since the equip\u00adment was installed,\u201d says Leinen\u00adbach<\/p>\n<h2>Simple Installation<\/h2>\n<p>Jenal, who over\u00adsaw the con\u00adver\u00adsion work, agrees. \u201cThe instal\u00adla\u00adtion process is self-explana\u00adto\u00adry and very straight\u00adforward. Our own staff were able to car\u00adry out the work when they were going to a pri\u00adma\u00adry sub\u00adsta\u00adtion any\u00adway for oth\u00ader rea\u00adsons.\u201d The new equip\u00adment has freed up resources that the oper\u00ada\u00adtional super\u00advi\u00adsor and his team can now allo\u00adcate else\u00adwhere.
