Even with\u00adout alter\u00adna\u00adtives to coal and oil fac\u00adtored in, how\u00adev\u00ader, the future is set to see grids car\u00adry\u00ading more and more elec\u00adtri\u00adcal ener\u00adgy as demand con\u00adtin\u00adues to rise.<\/p>\n<p>In response to our move toward new forms of ener\u00adgy, the pro\u00adpor\u00adtion of large-scale pow\u00ader plants (nuclear, coal, and gas) con\u00adtribut\u00ading to grids is expect\u00aded to drop from 70&nbsp;per\u00adcent today to between 56 and 32&nbsp;per\u00adcent. This means that we will be able to pro\u00adduce 52 to 79&nbsp;per\u00adcent of elec\u00adtri\u00adcal ener\u00adgy with\u00adout emis\u00adsions, depend\u00ading on which 2040 sce\u00adnario plays out.<br>\n<br>\nSolar and wind pow\u00ader will account for the largest ener\u00adgy share, but the amount that these renew\u00adable resources are actu\u00adal\u00adly able to pro\u00adduce will fluc\u00adtu\u00adate over the course of the year and day to day as local wind, sun, and water con\u00addi\u00adtions change. As many of these plants are also much small\u00ader than their con\u00adven\u00adtion\u00adal coun\u00adter\u00adparts, the switch to renew\u00adable resources is set to have a notice\u00adable impact on grids. The effects of this include:<\/p>\n<div class=\"wpcmsdev-box\">\n<div class=\"box-content\">\n<h3><big>1<\/big><br>\nNew power control methods:<\/h3>\n<p>Grid oper\u00ada\u00adtion will need to adapt to fluc\u00adtu\u00adat\u00ading elec\u00adtri\u00adcal ener\u00adgy pro\u00advi\u00adsion in order to cov\u00ader demand. Where coal bunkers were once the stor\u00adage solu\u00adtion of choice, there is now demand for short-term and long-term ener\u00adgy stor\u00adage meth\u00adods as a way of reg\u00adu\u00adlat\u00ading the avail\u00adable pow\u00ader bal\u00adance. The stor\u00adage tech\u00adnolo\u00adgies with the most focus include pow\u00ader-to-gas plants, pumped-stor\u00adage pow\u00ader plants, and bat\u00adter\u00adies.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"wpcmsdev-box\">\n<div class=\"box-content\">\n<h3><big>2<\/big><br>\nStructural changes in grids:<\/h3>\n<p>Most renew\u00adable sources of ener\u00adgy are installed in loca\u00adtions where the sup\u00adply of pri\u00adma\u00adry ener\u00adgy (wind, sun, bio\u00adgas, or bio\u00admass) is at its most plen\u00adti\u00adful\u2009\u2014 not nec\u00ades\u00adsar\u00adi\u00adly where demand is high\u00adest. Sup\u00adplies of ener\u00adgy are also becom\u00ading increas\u00ading\u00adly dis\u00adpersed and renew\u00adable plants tend to be small\u00ader than con\u00adven\u00adtion\u00adal ones.<\/p>\n<p>Many pro\u00adduc\u00aders are shift\u00ading away from trans\u00admis\u00adsion grids in favor of dis\u00adtri\u00adb\u00adu\u00adtion grids. Due to the fluc\u00adtu\u00adat\u00ading sup\u00adply of pri\u00adma\u00adry ener\u00adgy, the installed capac\u00adi\u00adty (and there\u00adfore the con\u00adnect\u00aded load required) in rela\u00adtion to annu\u00adal ener\u00adgy yield is much high\u00ader than it is in con\u00adven\u00adtion\u00adal pow\u00ader plants. This means that both dis\u00adtri\u00adb\u00adu\u00adtion grids and trans\u00admis\u00adsion grids will need to be expand\u00aded in many cas\u00ades.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"wpcmsdev-box\">\n<div class=\"box-content\">\n<h3><big>3<\/big><br>\nGrowth of power grids:<\/h3>\n<p>As the world moves toward alter\u00adna\u00adtive resources, demand for elec\u00adtri\u00adcal ener\u00adgy is also expect\u00aded to rise by 50% world\u00adwide and pow\u00ader grids will be required to trans\u00adport this addi\u00adtion\u00adal ener\u00adgy. The capac\u00adi\u00adty need\u00aded for trans\u00adporta\u00adtion will depend on sup\u00adply and demand over the course of the day. Renew\u00adable meth\u00adods of gen\u00ader\u00adat\u00ading ener\u00adgy cre\u00adate larg\u00ader fluc\u00adtu\u00ada\u00adtions on the sup\u00adply side because, due to nat\u00adur\u00adal con\u00addi\u00adtions, the oper\u00adat\u00ading times of wind pow\u00ader plants are only around 40&nbsp;per\u00adcent of con\u00adven\u00adtion\u00adal plants\u2014and just under 15&nbsp;per\u00adcent in the case of solar plants.<\/p>\n<p>As a result, much high\u00ader capac\u00adi\u00adty lev\u00adels need to be installed in order to deliv\u00ader the same amount of ener\u00adgy. Inte\u00adgrat\u00ading road trans\u00adporta\u00adtion into the grid also brings new fluc\u00adtu\u00ada\u00adtions on the demand side, which may result in a need to expand the grids, depend\u00ading on their reserve capac\u00adi\u00adties.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"wpcmsdev-box\">\n<div class=\"box-content\">\n<h3><big>4<\/big><br>\nIncreased grid flexibility:<\/h3>\n<p>Grids oper\u00adate with reserves that they can use in excep\u00adtion\u00adal cir\u00adcum\u00adstances and as a back\u00adup in the event of prob\u00adlems. As a result of struc\u00adtur\u00adal changes and increased elec\u00adtric\u00adi\u00adty lev\u00adels, the capac\u00adi\u00adty of grids will be used more inten\u00adsive\u00adly at all volt\u00adage lev\u00adels and, in response, grids will need to be strength\u00adened and pro\u00advid\u00aded with relief mea\u00adsures using a more flex\u00adi\u00adble approach to sup\u00adply and demand. Smart grids, smart meters, new elec\u00adtric\u00adi\u00adty trad\u00ading con\u00adcepts, and more flex\u00adi\u00adble price mod\u00adels will be need\u00aded to achieve this.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"wpcmsdev-box\">\n<div class=\"box-content\">\n<h3><big>5<\/big><br>\nExpansion in grid technology:<\/h3>\n<p>Apart from the pro\u00adduc\u00adtion and con\u00adsump\u00adtion of ener\u00adgy, a fur\u00adther tech\u00adno\u00adlog\u00adi\u00adcal devel\u00adop\u00adment is tak\u00ading place in elec\u00adtric\u00adi\u00adty grids. Wind plants, solar plants, elec\u00adtric stor\u00adage devices, elec\u00adtrol\u00ady\u00adsis plants, charg\u00ading infra\u00adstruc\u00adtures for elec\u00adtric vehi\u00adcles, and numer\u00adous con\u00adsumers all have one thing in com\u00admon\u2009\u2014\u2009they both sup\u00adply and are oper\u00adat\u00aded with direct cur\u00adrent. As a result of the move toward renew\u00adable forms of ener\u00adgy, the installed capac\u00adi\u00adty of direct-cur\u00adrent sys\u00adtems in many grids already exceeds that of con\u00adven\u00adtion\u00adal alter\u00adnat\u00ading-cur\u00adrent sys\u00adtems (gen\u00ader\u00ada\u00adtors, dri\u00adves, and alter\u00adnat\u00ading-cur\u00adrent con\u00adsumers).<\/p>\n<p>The use of con\u00advert\u00aders that work with pow\u00ader elec\u00adtron\u00adics is set to rise in the future. New equip\u00adment with pow\u00ader elec\u00adtron\u00adics and new con\u00adven\u00adtion\u00adal equip\u00adment can be used to face the chal\u00adleng\u00ading sit\u00adu\u00ada\u00adtions pre\u00adsent\u00aded by oper\u00adat\u00ading the grids of the future.
