From the drawing board to the grid<\/h2>\n


\nThose were the days! When Wolf\u00adgang Albrecht joined MR\u2019s devel\u00adop\u00adment depart\u00adment as an engi\u00adneer back in 1987, on-load tap-chang\u00aders were still being designed on a draw\u00ading board, as you can see in this image of his col\u00adleague Leo Pillmeier. This was also true for the ini\u00adtial drafts of the VACUTAP\u00ae VV\u00ae, which was designed by a devel\u00adop\u00adment team led by Albrecht.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen it was launched on the mar\u00adket in 2000, it was the world\u2019s first high-speed resis\u00adtor-type tap-chang\u00ader involv\u00ading vac\u00adu\u00adum tech\u00adnol\u00ado\u00adgy and insu\u00adlat\u00ading oil.\u201d Of course, draw\u00ading boards have long since been replaced with 3D CAD sys\u00adtems at MR, but apart from a few small tech\u00adni\u00adcal changes, the VACUTAP\u00ae VV\u00ae still oper\u00adates based on the same con\u00adcept.

The starting point<\/h2>\n

In con\u00adven\u00adtion\u00adal tap chang\u00aders, an elec\u00adtric arc con\u00adt\u00ada\u00adm\u00adi\u00adnates the insu\u00adlat\u00ading oil when switch\u00ading takes place, mean\u00ading that the oil reg\u00adu\u00adlar\u00adly needs chang\u00ading. In appli\u00adca\u00adtions with hun\u00addreds of thou\u00adsands of switch\u00ading oper\u00ada\u00adtions, that\u2019s quite often! As envi\u00adron\u00admen\u00adtal and cost con\u00adcerns became more promi\u00adnent among ener\u00adgy sup\u00adpli\u00aders, the call for an alter\u00adna\u00adtive low-main\u00adte\u00adnance solu\u00adtion grew loud\u00ader.<\/p>\n

Pioneering work<\/h2>\n

MR moved into vac\u00adu\u00adum-switch\u00ading tech\u00adnol\u00ado\u00adgy at the end of the 1980s when it pur\u00adchased the reac\u00adtor-type tap-chang\u00ader divi\u00adsion of West\u00ading\u00adhouse Elec\u00adtric Cor\u00adpo\u00adra\u00adtion. How\u00adev\u00ader, the tech\u00adnol\u00ado\u00adgy remained a side\u00adline for a long time and only real\u00adly caught on with the VACUTAP\u00ae VV\u00ae.<\/p>\n

The solution<\/h2>\n

The elec\u00adtric arc can\u00adnot cause dam\u00adage in vac\u00adu\u00adum inter\u00adrupters, so there\u2019s no need to change the oil. What\u2019s more, this switch\u00ading tech\u00adnol\u00ado\u00adgy enables alter\u00adna\u00adtive, envi\u00adron\u00admen\u00adtal\u00adly friend\u00adly insu\u00adlat\u00ading flu\u00adids to be used. Devel\u00adop\u00ading the VACUTAP\u00ae VV\u00ae was tricky, recalls Albrecht: \u201cThe biggest chal\u00adlenge was to adapt the spring ener\u00adgy accu\u00admu\u00adla\u00adtors for switch\u00ading. The vac\u00adu\u00adum forces of the six vac\u00adu\u00adum inter\u00adrupters mean that much high\u00ader dri\u00adve torques are required when switch\u00ading\u201d.\u201c<\/p>\n

The very first tap changer<\/h2>\n

The first VACUTAP\u00ae VV\u00ae to leave the pro\u00adduc\u00adtion plant in Regens\u00adburg set off on a long jour\u00adney. Its des\u00adti\u00adna\u00adtion was Kuwait City in the emi\u00adrate of the same name on the Ara\u00adbi\u00adan Penin\u00adsu\u00adla. The tap chang\u00ader has reli\u00adably been car\u00adry\u00ading out its work inside a Hun\u00adgar\u00adi\u00adan trans\u00adformer at a pri\u00adma\u00adry sub\u00adsta\u00adtion in the Yarmouk dis\u00adtrict of the city since May 2000. And it\u2019s still going strong. To this day, it has\u00adn\u2019t expe\u00adri\u00adenced a sin\u00adgle fail\u00adure. And a good job too! Sum\u00admer tem\u00adper\u00ada\u00adtures in this desert city climb to 50 degrees Cel\u00adsius, mak\u00ading air-con\u00addi\u00adtion\u00ading an absolute neces\u00adsi\u00adty for its res\u00adi\u00addents.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

2,525 operators<\/big><\/h3>\n

world\u00adwide are using the vac\u00adu\u00adum on-load tap-chang\u00ader. It is oper\u00adat\u00ading in trans\u00adform\u00aders from 399 dif\u00adfer\u00adent man\u00adu\u00adfac\u00adtur\u00aders.<\/p>\n

27,123 VACUTAP\u00ae VV\u00ae<\/big><\/h3>\n

units have been sold since the mar\u00adket launch. Ini\u00adtial\u00adly, orders grew slow\u00adly but more and more grid oper\u00ada\u00adtors and man\u00adu\u00adfac\u00adtur\u00aders soon rec\u00adog\u00adnized the ben\u00ade\u00adfits.<\/p>\n

switching operations<\/big><\/h3>\n

(at least) can be com\u00adplet\u00aded by today\u2019s VACUTAP\u00ae VV\u00ae before a ser\u00advice is due, with just inter\u00adim main\u00adte\u00adnance per\u00adformed after 300,000 switch\u00ading oper\u00ada\u00adtions. With the first VV, the main\u00adte\u00adnance inter\u00adval was just 150,000 switch\u00ading oper\u00ada\u00adtions.<\/p>\n

The tap chang\u00ader is approved for this oil oper\u00adat\u00ading tem\u00adper\u00ada\u00adture range. At sub-zero tem\u00adper\u00ada\u00adtures, the oil is very vis\u00adcous, while at high tem\u00adper\u00ada\u00adtures, it is run\u00adny. Despite this, the switch\u00ading process always has to work reli\u00adably in the same way.<\/p>\n

40 bis 145 Kilovolt<\/big><\/h3>\n

The VACUTAP\u00ae VV\u00ae can be designed for this volt\u00adage range. Depend\u00ading on the oper\u00adat\u00ading volt\u00adage, the tap chang\u00ader is between 1.80 and 2.40 meters in height.<\/p>\n
