Over time, the costs add up\u2014especially if the trans\u00adformer requires replace\u00adment parts that are no longer avail\u00adable or dif\u00adfi\u00adcult to come by.Belgian grid oper\u00ada\u00adtor Elia was fac\u00ading this exact prob\u00adlem in its pri-mary sub\u00adsta\u00adtion in Zaven\u00adtem, in the exurbs of Brus\u00adsels. A trans\u00adformer had got\u00adten old\u00ader and the tap chang\u00ader inside was worn out. Since the man\u00adu\u00adfac\u00adtur\u00ader had ceased pro\u00adduc\u00adtion back in 1989, replace\u00adment parts were increas\u00ading\u00adly scarce and expen\u00adsive.<\/p>\n<p>How\u00adev\u00ader, a new trans\u00adformer was out of the ques\u00adtion for Elia. After all, all oth\u00ader com\u00adpo\u00adnents were still func\u00adtion\u00ading with\u00adout prob\u00adlems. So the grid oper\u00ada\u00adtor com\u00admis\u00adsioned ser\u00advice provider Main\u00adte\u00adnance Part\u00adners, togeth\u00ader with the Rein\u00adhausen Lux\u00adem\u00adburg (RLU) sub\u00adsidiary, to replace the old tap chang\u00ader with a new one in ear\u00adly May, thus future-proof\u00ading the trans\u00adformer.<\/p>\n<p>The entire con\u00adver\u00adsion took only ten busi\u00adness days, despite the added com\u00adpli\u00adca\u00adtions of the coro\u00adn\u00adavirus pan\u00addem\u00adic. Sebas\u00adt\u00adian H\u00f6lz\u00ader, Man\u00adag\u00ading Direc\u00adtor of RLU, explains how the team got it done in six steps:<br>\n<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: left;\"><span id=\"number\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>1 <\/strong><\/span>Getting to know the transformer<\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"trafobilder alignleft wp-image-6118 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/onload.reinhausen.com\/de\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/25\/2020\/12\/1_OLTC_Typenschild_IMG_8297_web.jpg\" alt width=\"1024\" height=\"768\"><span class=\"absatz\">Every pow\u00ader trans\u00adformer is dif\u00adfer\u00adent. For that rea\u00adson, we first com\u00adpiled all the infor\u00adma\u00adtion from the trans\u00adformer book and name\u00adplates. This includ\u00aded the pow\u00ader of the trans\u00adformer, the line and insu\u00adla\u00adtion volt\u00adages and the sup\u00adply volt\u00adage for the motor-dri\u00adve unit. Fur\u00adther\u00admore, we were able to use this data to deter\u00admine how much cur\u00adrent was sup\u00adposed to flow through the new tap chang\u00ader and how the elec\u00adtri\u00adcal wiring should look.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: left;\"><span id=\"number\"><strong>2 <\/strong><\/span>Selecting components<\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"trafobilder alignright wp-image-6119 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/onload.reinhausen.com\/de\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/25\/2020\/12\/2_ACEC-MA_alt_IMG_8300_web.jpg\" alt width=\"768\" height=\"1024\"><span class=\"absatz\">With this pre\u00adlim\u00adi\u00adnary knowl\u00adedge, it was clear that only a three\u00adp\u00adhase VACUTAP VM 500 with Y con\u00adnec\u00adtion would be a pos\u00adsi\u00adble tap chang\u00ader, which requires almost no main\u00adte\u00adnance in com\u00adpar\u00adi\u00adson to the old OILTAP OLTC. Fur\u00adther\u00admore, our experts in Regens\u00adburg explained how the adapter flange need\u00aded to look for the switch head, so that we could insert the new tap chang\u00ader into the open\u00ading of the old one. We also spec\u00adi\u00adfied the equip\u00adment of the motor-dri\u00adve unit togeth\u00ader with Elia. We then pro\u00adduced the tap chang\u00ader and dri\u00adve in-house. A third-par\u00adty steel man\u00adu\u00adfac\u00adtur\u00ader pro\u00adduced the adapter flange.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: left;\"><span id=\"number\"><strong>3 <\/strong><\/span>Preparing the transformer<\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"trafobilder alignleft wp-image-6120 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/onload.reinhausen.com\/de\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/25\/2020\/12\/3_Aufschneiden_TR-Tank_BQAK7993_web.jpg\" alt width=\"1024\" height=\"768\"><span class=\"absatz\">Before replac\u00ading the tap chang\u00ader, the ser\u00advice provider Main\u00adte\u00adnance Part\u00adners pre\u00adpared the trans\u00adformer for two days. The trans\u00adformer first need\u00aded to be switched off and ground\u00aded. Oil was then drained from the trans\u00adformer tank and man\u00adholes were cut in the 15-mil\u00adlime\u00adter thick trans\u00adformer wall. This allowed our tech\u00adni\u00adcians to climb into the inside of the cramped trans\u00adformer tank, in full-body suits, and start the replace\u00adment work.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: left;\"><span id=\"number\"><strong>4 <\/strong><\/span>Replacing old with new<\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"trafobilder alignright wp-image-6122 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/onload.reinhausen.com\/de\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/25\/2020\/12\/4_OLTC_Einbau_IMG_8315_web.jpg\" alt width=\"768\" height=\"1024\"><span class=\"absatz\">First, the old tap chang\u00ader need\u00aded to be removed. To do so, we cut open the cov\u00ader using a blow torch and lift\u00aded the tap chang\u00ader out of the trans\u00adformer tank by crane.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"absatz\">We were then able to bring in the oil com\u00adpart\u00adment of the new tap chang\u00ader, along with the divert\u00ader switch insert, and posi\u00adtion the selec\u00adtor. Then we con\u00adnect\u00aded the selec\u00adtor in the trans\u00adformer with the tap wind\u00ading and to the old sup\u00adply lines via indi\u00advid\u00adu\u00adal\u00adly adjust\u00aded cables. Final\u00adly, the motor-dri\u00adve unit and the link\u00adage from the tap chang\u00ader to the dri\u00adve were attached.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: left;\"><span id=\"number\"><strong>5 <\/strong><\/span>Testing and measuring<\/h2>\n<p id=\"block-5\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"trafobilder alignleft wp-image-6146 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/onload.reinhausen.com\/de\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/25\/2020\/12\/5_Testmessungen_IMG_8391_web.jpg\" alt width=\"768\" height=\"1024\"><span class=\"absatz\">Test\u00ading was done in the next step. For this pur\u00adpose, experts from Main\u00adte\u00adnance Part\u00adners mea\u00adsured the trans\u00admis\u00adsion ratio at low volt\u00adage to see whether the tap chang\u00ader stepped down the volt\u00adage prop\u00ader\u00adly. In this way we were able to ensure that all sup\u00adply lines were attached to the cor\u00adrect points on the selec\u00adtor. Mea\u00adsure\u00adments of the resis\u00adtance and iso\u00adla\u00adtion took place lat\u00ader.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: left;\"><span id=\"number\"><strong>6 <\/strong><\/span>Back on line<\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"trafobilder alignright wp-image-6121 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/onload.reinhausen.com\/de\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/25\/2020\/12\/3_Oelmaschine_vor_Ort_IMG_3179_web.jpg\" alt width=\"1024\" height=\"768\"><span class=\"absatz\">This con\u00adclud\u00aded the work onsite. Main\u00adte\u00adnance Part\u00adners closed the trans\u00adformer tank again and filled it with oil. The oil was then treat\u00aded \u2014 in oth\u00ader words, dried, degassed and cleaned to remove con\u00adt\u00ada\u00adm\u00adi\u00adna\u00adtion par\u00adti\u00adcles. For this pur\u00adpose, the filled trans\u00adformer need\u00aded to be con\u00adnect\u00aded to a pro\u00adcess\u00ading sys\u00adtem for sev\u00ader\u00adal days. After\u00adwards, we hand\u00aded the trans\u00adformer over to Elia and, after a two-day no-load test, it was back on line.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"portrait-100 wp-image-6096 size-full alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/onload.reinhausen.com\/de\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/25\/2020\/12\/elia-benjamin-pierre.jpg\" alt width=\"100\" height=\"100\">\u201cNext to the qual\u00adi\u00adty of the OLTC itself, the qual\u00adi\u00adty of the replace\u00adment work is also cru\u00adcial to guar\u00adan\u00adtee a high reli\u00ada\u00adbil\u00adi\u00adty of our trans\u00adform\u00aders.
