USA: GOING ABOVE AND BEYOND<\/h2>\n

In a retrofit project for US energy giant Dominion, MESSKO demonstrated that flexibility is just as important to accessories as it is elsewhere.<\/h3>\n

Oil lev\u00adel gauges are rarely the cen\u00adter of atten\u00adtion. There\u2019s no dis\u00adput\u00ading their indis\u00adpens\u00adable role in ensur\u00ading that trans\u00adform\u00aders run \ufb02awlessly\u2014but, as Petra Wiethoff from MESSKO\u2019s cus\u00adtomer sup\u00adport team points out, they shouldn\u2019t stand out: \u201cThey\u2019re like car wind\u00adshield wipers in that they need to work dis\u00adcreet\u00adly in the back\u00adground.\u201d Despite their low pro\ufb01le, Wiethoff learned just how much delight these com\u00adpo\u00adnents can bring to cus\u00adtomers dur\u00ading a project for Domin\u00adion Ener\u00adgy, one of the USA\u2019s biggest ener\u00adgy sup\u00adpli\u00aders and an MR cus\u00adtomer for more than two decades. Based in Rich\u00admond, Vir\u00adginia, the pow\u00ader \ufb02ow\u00ading through the company\u2019s grid feeds into areas includ\u00ading the Wash\u00ading\u00adton, D.C. admin\u00adis\u00adtra\u00adtive district\u2014which means out\u00adages are some\u00adthing that Domin\u00adion sim\u00adply can\u00adnot afford.<\/p>\n

Wiethoff and her US col\u00adleague Car\u00adlos Bit\u00adtner were well aware of this when Domin\u00adion approached them for a quote for a retro\ufb01t project. The com\u00adpa\u00adny want\u00aded to \ufb01t 45 old\u00ader trans\u00adform\u00aders from a Japan\u00adese man\u00adu\u00adfac\u00adtur\u00ader with MESSKO\u00ae MTOs \u2014 noth\u00ading unusu\u00adal there. There was one catch, how\u00adev\u00ader: the weight of the rub\u00adber bag could cause the straight \ufb02oat to bend, dam\u00adag\u00ading both it and the bag itself. The stan\u00addard approach would be to mod\u00adi\u00adfy the con\u00adser\u00adva\u00adtors on site, which would extend the time\u00adline con\u00adsid\u00ader\u00adably, add com\u00adplex\u00adi\u00adty as well as cost to the effort.

Wiethoff quick\u00adly rec\u00adog\u00adnized that \ufb02ex\u00adi\u00adbil\u00adi\u00adty was the key to \ufb01nd\u00ading a solu\u00adtion: \u201cWe need\u00aded curved \ufb02oats.\u201d As MESSKO had noth\u00ading of this kind in its range at that point, the team quick\u00adly got to work on devel\u00adop\u00ading the per\u00adfect \ufb02oat for this unique\u00adly shaped con\u00adser\u00adva\u00adtor tank in order to ful\ufb01ll Dominion\u2019s needs. Messko worked with lead tech\u00adni\u00adcian Matthew Beale and James Delong to devel\u00adop the cur\u00adva\u00adture and shape of the \ufb02oat bends. In late sum\u00admer 2020, the \ufb01rst MTOs for Domin\u00adion were then suc\u00adcess\u00adful\u00adly installed\u2014without any inter\u00adrup\u00adtions in func\u00adtion.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt was a com\u00adplete suc\u00adcess,\u201d says Car\u00adlos Bit\u00adtner, sum\u00adming up the project, \u201cand the cus\u00adtomer is very keen for MESSKO to devel\u00adop unique solu\u00adtions for oth\u00ader out\u00addat\u00aded and unnec\u00ades\u00adsar\u00adi\u00adly com\u00adplex devices in its \ufb02eet.\u201d Jonathan Dev\u00ader\u00adick, Dominion\u2019s Oper\u00ada\u00adtional Engi\u00adneer\u00ading Reli\u00ada\u00adbil\u00adi\u00adty Group, agrees: \u201cThe con\u00adser\u00adva\u00adtor tank oil lev\u00adel gauge is a crit\u00adi\u00adcal com\u00adpo\u00adnent in our resilien\u00adcy pro\u00adgram. It is imper\u00ada\u00adtive we have a reli\u00adable and accu\u00adrate oil lev\u00adel gauge for our over\u00adall pro\u00adtec\u00adtion scheme. This solu\u00adtion ulti\u00admate\u00adly pro\u00advides a reli\u00adable net\u00adwork to our cus\u00adtomers in a cost effec\u00adtive man\u00adner. Work\u00ading through this engi\u00adneer\u00ading chal\u00adlenge has improved our rela\u00adtion\u00adship with Messko and has shown us Messko\u2019s capa\u00adbil\u00adi\u00adties.\u201d<\/p>\n

NEW ZEALAND: THE IDEAL ISLAND SOLUTION<\/h2>\n

Transpower in New Zealand was looking for a durable oil analysis sensor. MR came up with the solution \u2014 in the form of the MSENSE \u00ae DGA 5.<\/h3>\n

The sea spray, salt-laden air, and wind that are fea\u00adtures of New Zealand\u2019s cli\u00admate might be exact\u00adly what attracts tourists who are fans of the great outdoors\u2014but they are a tox\u00adic source of cor\u00adro\u00adsion for trans\u00adform\u00aders. That\u2019s why New Zealand ener\u00adgy com\u00adpa\u00adny Trans\u00adpow\u00ader val\u00adues excep\u00adtion\u00adal dura\u00adbil\u00adi\u00adty and a long ser\u00advice life so high\u00adly. This in turn relies on a pre\u00adcise oil analysis\u2014but in order for this to hap\u00adpen, the DGA sen\u00adsors them\u00adselves need to be extreme\u00adly durable too.<\/p>\n

The New Zealand grid operator\u2019s trans\u00adform\u00aders have to bat\u00adtle with the forces of nature, which means they needex\u00adtra-effec\u00adtive mon\u00adi\u00adtor\u00ading.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

In 2020, Trans\u00adpow\u00ader decid\u00aded that it need\u00aded to make a change on its HVDC Pole 2 Con\u00advert\u00ader Trans\u00adform\u00aders locat\u00aded at Hay\u00adwards and Ben\u00admore sub\u00adsta\u00adtions. The Trans\u00adpow\u00ader HVDC link main\u00adtains a DC con\u00adnec\u00adtion which \u2018runs\u2019 from Ben\u00admore locat\u00aded in the South Island of New Zealand to Hay\u00adwards locat\u00aded in the North Island of New Zealand. \u201cThe costs of oper\u00adat\u00ading the pre\u00advi\u00adous equip\u00adment had become a prob\u00adlem because we need\u00aded to use con\u00adsum\u00adable mate\u00adri\u00adals like heli\u00adum as the cal\u00adi\u00adbra\u00adtion gas,\u201d explains Lee Har\u00adrop, Senior Engi\u00adneer at Trans\u00adpow\u00ader.<\/p>\n

MR has been oper\u00adat\u00ading a sub\u00adsidiary in Syd\u00adney, Aus\u00adtralia since 1987 and sup\u00adplies loca\u00adtions includ\u00ading New Zealand from there. As a long-stand\u00ading cus\u00adtomer of MR\u2019s on-load tap-chang\u00aders, Trans\u00adpow\u00ader was aware of the company\u2019s new prod\u00aduct, the MSENSE\u00ae DGA 5. It was this online oil analy\u00adsis device that result\u00aded in MR win\u00adning out against oth\u00ader estab\u00adlished sup\u00adpli\u00aders in the ten\u00adder for Transpower\u2019s project, thanks to a num\u00adber of its fea\u00adtures: The device requires no car\u00adri\u00ader or cal\u00adi\u00adbra\u00adtion gas\u00ades what\u00adso\u00adev\u00ader and is also extreme\u00adly durable. \u201cMR not only met all of Transpower\u2019s tech\u00adni\u00adcal require\u00adments, but actu\u00adal\u00adly exceed\u00aded them as the device is able to mon\u00adi\u00adtor more gas\u00ades than required,\u201d explains Lee.<\/p>\n
