The challenge<\/h2>\n<p>More off\u00adshore wind parks con\u00adtin\u00adue to be built at larg\u00ader and larg\u00ader sizes around the world. At the same time, the gen\u00ader\u00ada\u00adtive per\u00adfor\u00admance of wind tur\u00adbines is steadi\u00adly increas\u00ading, and with it the oper\u00adat\u00ading volt\u00adage of the con\u00adnec\u00adtion cables from the wind tur\u00adbines to the col\u00adlec\u00adtion and con\u00adnect\u00ading plat\u00adforms, some\u00adtimes at a dis\u00adtance of over 30&nbsp;kilo\u00adme\u00adters. A capac\u00adi\u00adty of 66&nbsp;kilo\u00advolts has become com\u00admon, and high\u00ader volt\u00adages up to 145&nbsp;kV are being dis\u00adcussed. In 2019, the experts at the Inter\u00adna\u00adtion\u00adal Elec\u00adtrotech\u00adni\u00adcal Com\u00admis\u00adsion (IEC) there\u00adfore decid\u00aded to per\u00admit\u2009\u2014\u2009along\u00adside the soak test (a 24-hour test at nom\u00adi\u00adnal volt\u00adage)\u2009\u2014\u2009only res\u00ado\u00adnance test\u00ading for oper\u00adat\u00ading volt\u00adages greater than 36&nbsp;kilo\u00advolts in the new IEC&nbsp;63026 stan\u00addard for sub\u00adma\u00adrine cables up to 72.5&nbsp;kV.<br>\n<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_6893\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-6893\" style=\"width: 800px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-6893 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/onload.reinhausen.com\/de\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/25\/2021\/12\/Offshore-Windpark-in-the-north-sea.jpg\" alt width=\"800\" height=\"450\"><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-6893\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">How do I get a test\u00ading sys\u00adtem on the high seas? Many off\u00adshore wind park oper\u00ada\u00adtors face this ques\u00adtion when they have to test their cables.(\u00a9 HIGHVOLT)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>For cables with a nom\u00adi\u00adnal volt\u00adage greater than 110&nbsp;kV, this has been stan\u00addard for decades. But how do I get such a test\u00ading sys\u00adtem to the switchgear and con\u00advert\u00ader plat\u00adform? In the mid\u00addle of the ocean? And while deal\u00ading with wind and weath\u00ader? The indus\u00adtry need\u00aded a solu\u00adtion urgent\u00adly for test\u00ading cables after instal\u00adla\u00adtion and find\u00ading the source of error in case of a lat\u00ader defect. Oth\u00ader\u00adwise, elec\u00adtric\u00adi\u00adty will not reach the shore.<\/p>\n<h2>2. The Solution<\/h2>\n<p>The test\u00ading experts at HIGHVOLT are work\u00ading to make their proven res\u00ado\u00adnance test\u00ading sys\u00adtem fit for use at sea. First, there were exten\u00adsive dis\u00adcus\u00adsions with installers and oper\u00ada\u00adtors of wind parks, cable man\u00adu\u00adfac\u00adtur\u00aders, ser\u00advice providers and cer\u00adti\u00adfi\u00adca\u00adtion com\u00adpa\u00adnies in order to clar\u00adi\u00adfy the spec\u00adi\u00adfi\u00adca\u00adtions and pro\u00adce\u00addures for trans\u00adport, set\u00adup and oper\u00ada\u00adtion. As a result, it was clear that the test\u00ading sys\u00adtem needs to be much more rugged than its coun\u00adter\u00adpart on land because of the rougher con\u00addi\u00adtions at sea. Final\u00adly, there is also the DNV cer\u00adti\u00adfi\u00adca\u00adtion, an impor\u00adtant pre\u00adreq\u00adui\u00adsite to allow the sys\u00adtem to be trans\u00adport\u00aded at sea, fer\u00adried to the plat\u00adform and oper\u00adat\u00aded there.<\/p>\n<p>The engi\u00adneers at HIGHVOLT reworked the test\u00ading sys\u00adtem and divid\u00aded it into sev\u00ader\u00adal mod\u00adules in order to meet the weight spec\u00adi\u00adfi\u00adca\u00adtions. Reac\u00adtors and exciter trans\u00adform\u00aders have been inte\u00adgrat\u00aded into the trans\u00adport frame, which simul\u00adta\u00adne\u00adous\u00adly pro\u00adtects them, and open high-volt\u00adage con\u00adnec\u00adtions are designed as shield\u00aded cables. To ensure that all mate\u00adri\u00adals, paints and weld seams sat\u00adis\u00adfy the spe\u00adcial require\u00adments of mar\u00aditime use, HIGHVOLT worked togeth\u00ader with expe\u00adri\u00adenced ship\u00adbuild\u00ading engi\u00adneers and a spe\u00adcial\u00adized ship\u00adyard. Only twelve months after the ini\u00adtial sketch, the test\u00ading sys\u00adtem at the HIGHVOLT plant in Dres\u00adden was ready for its first use in the field.<\/p>\n<h2>3. The first Application<\/h2>\n<p>The HIGHVOLT test sys\u00adtem saw its first appli\u00adca\u00adtion by an off\u00adshore wind park oper\u00ada\u00adtor in the North Sea in Novem\u00adber&nbsp;2021. The wind park is almost fin\u00adished, and the oper\u00ada\u00adtor has to check whether the cables were installed with\u00adout errors. Expe\u00adri\u00adence tells us that more than half of all cas\u00ades of faults can be traced back to faulty cable instal\u00adla\u00adtions.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_6896\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-6896\" style=\"width: 800px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-6896 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/onload.reinhausen.com\/de\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/25\/2021\/12\/Highvolt-technician-on-platform.jpg\" alt width=\"800\" height=\"450\"><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-6896\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">HIGHVOLT experts have com\u00adplet\u00aded spe\u00adcial train\u00ading to be able to sup\u00adport cus\u00adtomers on-site dur\u00ading the test. To even be allowed on the plat\u00adform, HIGHVOLT qual\u00adi\u00adfied three ser\u00advice engi\u00adneers for off\u00adshore work assign\u00adments.<\/p>\n<p>To be qual\u00adi\u00adfied, they need\u00aded to jump into the ocean from a height of twelve meters with a res\u00adcue device, free them\u00adselves from a sink\u00ading heli\u00adcopter and prac\u00adtice work\u00ading at high alti\u00adtudes. Because work on a plat\u00adform is any\u00adthing but safe. Since con\u00adstruc\u00adtion work is still tak\u00ading place dur\u00ading the day, the cable tests were car\u00adried out on the night shift.
