Is this our future?<br>\n<\/p>\n<h2>No stable grid without innovation<\/h2>\n<p>After events such as the 2011 reac\u00adtor melt\u00addown in Japan and recent heat waves, the Ger\u00adman fed\u00ader\u00adal gov\u00adern\u00adment resolved to imple\u00adment a rapid ener\u00adgy rev\u00ado\u00adlu\u00adtion: by 2022, Ger\u00admany will phase out nuclear pow\u00ader, and by 2038 at the lat\u00adest, it will also divest itself of coal pow\u00ader. How\u00adev\u00ader, by deac\u00adti\u00advat\u00ading these pow\u00ader plants with large gen\u00ader\u00ada\u00adtors, grid oper\u00ada\u00adtion will be more vul\u00adner\u00ada\u00adble to inter\u00adrup\u00adtions. With\u00adout tech\u00adnolo\u00adgies to stab\u00adilize our grids, crit\u00adi\u00adcal sit\u00adu\u00ada\u00adtions would be every\u00adday occur\u00adrences in the future.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That is why Rein\u00adhausen Pow\u00ader Qual\u00adi\u00adty worked with Omex\u00adom Umspan\u00adnwerke GmbH to offer grid oper\u00ada\u00adtors an alter\u00adna\u00adtive. Omex\u00adom devel\u00adops ener\u00adgy infra\u00adstruc\u00adture sys\u00adtems for ener\u00adgy gen\u00ader\u00ada\u00adtion and dis\u00adtri\u00adb\u00adu\u00adtion. Togeth\u00ader, the two part\u00adners opti\u00admized a tried-and-true tech\u00adnol\u00ado\u00adgy for sta\u00adbi\u00adliz\u00ading the pow\u00ader sup\u00adply when placed at suit\u00adable grid nodes: MSCDN sys\u00adtems.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_7108\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-7108\" style=\"width: 500px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-7108 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/onload.reinhausen.com\/de\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/25\/2021\/12\/MSCDN-Funktionsprinzip.png\" alt width=\"500\" height=\"500\"><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-7108\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">A MSCDN sys\u00adtem works as fol\u00adlows: In case of high uti\u00adliza\u00adtion, capac\u00adi\u00adtive reac\u00adtive pow\u00ader is pro\u00advid\u00aded to sup\u00adport the volt\u00adage. In case of low load, the volt\u00adage-depen\u00addent acti\u00adva\u00adtion and deac\u00adti\u00adva\u00adtion of the com\u00adpen\u00adsa\u00adtion sys\u00adtem<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>MSCDN stands for mechan\u00adi\u00adcal\u00adly switched capac\u00adi\u00adtor with damp\u00ading network.\u201cThe sys\u00adtem con\u00adsists of a mechan\u00adi\u00adcal\u00adly switched capac\u00adi\u00adtor bank with a damp\u00ading net\u00adwork. Its pri\u00adma\u00adry task is the pro\u00advi\u00adsion of reac\u00adtive pow\u00ader for volt\u00adage reg\u00adu\u00adla\u00adtion. If more pow\u00ader is drawn from the grid than is pro\u00adduced, such as because of hun\u00addreds of thou\u00adsands of peo\u00adple con\u00adnect\u00ading their cars to charg\u00ading sta\u00adtions at once, the line volt\u00adage drops. If more ener\u00adgy is pro\u00adduced, per\u00adhaps because the weath\u00ader is ide\u00adal or because con\u00adsumers cur\u00adrent\u00adly require less, the volt\u00adage increases\u2014in both cas\u00ades, this can cause faults in the grid.<\/p>\n<p>MSCDN sys\u00adtems improve the pow\u00ader qual\u00adi\u00adty and<br>\neffec\u00adtive\u00adly damp\u00aden the res\u00ado\u00adnances in the grid. The chal\u00adlenge for PQ and Omex\u00adom was to opti\u00admize the MSCDN sys\u00adtem so that it sat\u00adis\u00adfies the strict require\u00adments of the four trans\u00admis\u00adsion grid oper\u00ada\u00adtors. They are respon\u00adsi\u00adble for near\u00adly 36,000 kilo\u00adme\u00adters of extra-high-volt\u00adage lines, which are ulti\u00admate\u00adly the life\u00adlines of the econ\u00ado\u00admy. PQ und Omex\u00adom there\u00adfore per\u00adformed numer\u00adous tests and sim\u00adu\u00adla\u00adtions \u2014also tak\u00ading into con\u00adsid\u00ader\u00ada\u00adtion future grid expan\u00adsion sce\u00adnar\u00adios. The sys\u00adtem can be acti\u00advat\u00aded to be phase-selec\u00adtive using a spe\u00adcial cir\u00adcuit break\u00ader. In case of high uti\u00adliza\u00adtion, it sup\u00adplies capac\u00adi\u00adtive reac\u00adtive pow\u00ader. With a low load, it offers pro\u00adtec\u00adtions against over\u00advolt\u00adage \u2014which is suf\u00adfi\u00adcient in many sit\u00adu\u00ada\u00adtions. Com\u00adplex dynam\u00adic sys\u00adtems, such as the STATCOM (rec\u00adti\u00adfi\u00ader trans\u00adformer) and sta\u00adt\u00adic VAR com\u00adpen\u00adsators (SVC), are used for contin\u00aduous reg\u00adu\u00adla\u00adtion.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"portrait-100 alignright wp-image-1836 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/onload.reinhausen.com\/de\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/25\/2021\/12\/Volker-Erfurth-Omexom.jpg\" alt width=\"150\" height=\"150\">\u201cMany solu\u00adtions have now appeared which enable renew\u00adable ener\u00adgy to be imple\u00adment\u00aded even with\u00adout cen\u00adtral pro\u00adduc\u00aders.\u201d <cite>Volk\u00ader Erfurth, Omex\u00adom<\/cite><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The imple\u00admen\u00adta\u00adtion of these sys\u00adtems makes Ger\u00admany bet\u00adter pre\u00adpared for the changes that come with the ener\u00adgy rev\u00ado\u00adlu\u00adtion. But this was not obvi\u00adous. \u201cWhen renew\u00adable ener\u00adgy got going, all the ener\u00adgy sup\u00adpli\u00aders saw these enor\u00admous prob\u00adlems and said it couldn\u2019t be done in this time span,\u201d says Volk\u00ader Erfurth of Omex\u00adom. \u201cBut since then, there have been many solu\u00adtions that made renew\u00adable ener\u00adgy fea\u00adsi\u00adble despite non-con\u00adtin\u00adu\u00adous sup\u00adply from cen\u00adtral pro\u00adduc\u00aders.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>There is still sub\u00adstan\u00adtial need for invest\u00adment, as the need for elec\u00adtric\u00adi\u00adty is greater than ever\u2014be it due to elec\u00adtric mobil\u00adi\u00adty, the increas\u00ading demand for hydro\u00adgen in the future, or com\u00adput\u00ading-inten\u00adsive infor\u00adma\u00adtion tech\u00adnol\u00ado\u00adgy. This means there is an urgent need for action. Erfurth says, \u201cBut I am opti\u00admistic that tech\u00adni\u00adcal solu\u00adtions such as the MSCDN sys\u00adtem will enable a con\u00adtin\u00adu\u00adous\u00adly sta\u00adble grid.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The col\u00adlab\u00ado\u00adra\u00adtion of the two com\u00adpa\u00adnies is thus an impor\u00adtant step in this direc\u00adtion. Sev\u00ader\u00adal sys\u00adtems are already in oper\u00ada\u00adtion.
