One path to sus\u00adtain\u00adable and fit-for-the-future mobil\u00adi\u00adty is through rail trans\u00adport pow\u00adered by green elec\u00adtric\u00adi\u00adty. After all, in Ger\u00admany alone, 74 per\u00adcent of all train kilo\u00adme\u00adters are already elec\u00adtri\u00adfied.<\/p>\n<p>Far less is discussed\u2014at least publicly\u2014about the loco\u00admo\u00adtives, rail\u00adcars, and dri\u00adve con\u00adcepts than about the rails. The ques\u00adtion of how to con\u00advert elec\u00adtric\u00adi\u00adty into motion as effi\u00adcient\u00adly and reli\u00adably as pos\u00adsi\u00adble is just as excit\u00ading \u2014and one that trans\u00adformer man\u00adu\u00adfac\u00adtur\u00aders and devel\u00adop\u00aders have been work\u00ading on inten\u00adsive\u00adly for a long time.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"like-with-bu wp-image-7443 size-full alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/onload.reinhausen.com\/de\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/25\/2022\/07\/bahntechnik-traktionstransformatoren-von-reinhausen.jpg\" alt width=\"1024\" height=\"370\"><\/p>\n<h2>Compact heroes<\/h2>\n<p>An elec\u00adtric dri\u00adve in a mov\u00ading object places spe\u00adcial demands on tech\u00adnol\u00ado\u00adgy. This is par\u00adtic\u00adu\u00adlar\u00adly the case for the trans\u00adform\u00aders that con\u00advert cur\u00adrent from over\u00adhead lines to dri\u00adves. If a mal\u00adfunc\u00adtion occurs in the mid\u00addle of nowhere, in the worst case it can take hours for a tech\u00adni\u00adcian to arrive on site and start repairs. And then there\u2019s the blocked track. A sin\u00adgle mal\u00adfunc\u00adtion can there\u00adfore quick\u00adly cause a cas\u00adcade of addi\u00adtion\u00adal prob\u00adlems and costs. This is true in the dense Euro\u00adpean net\u00adwork and even more so in less devel\u00adoped net\u00adworks with\u00adout par\u00adal\u00adlel branch lines.<\/p>\n<h2>A transformer becomes small<\/h2>\n<p>The glob\u00adal mar\u00adket wants rail trans\u00adform\u00aders that can be used flex\u00adi\u00adbly, and com\u00adpo\u00adnents such as MR Trac\u00adtion Solu\u00adtions that can be assem\u00adbled just as flex\u00adi\u00adbly so that they are com\u00adpat\u00adi\u00adble with the wide range of dri\u00adves. When talk\u00ading about trains, many peo\u00adple often think of \u201cloco\u00admo\u00adtives with elec\u00adtric dri\u00adves inside\u201d. The lighter the train, the less time it takes to brake into or accel\u00ader\u00adate out of a sta\u00adtion. This reduces cycle times at sta\u00adtions, trav\u00adel time from stand\u00adstill to stand\u00adstill, and of course ener\u00adgy con\u00adsump\u00adtion.<\/p>\n<p>The sec\u00adond fac\u00adtor after weight is space. This is the only way rail design\u00aders can make ide\u00adal use of the avail\u00adable space.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>Mobile vs. stationary<\/h2>\n<p>Rail trans\u00adform\u00aders also dif\u00adfer from their sta\u00adtion\u00adary rel\u00ada\u00adtives in their inner work\u00adings. Where\u00adas pow\u00ader trans\u00adform\u00aders can be sin\u00adgle-phase or three-phase, rail\u00adroad trans\u00adform\u00aders are always sin\u00adgle-phase shell or core trans\u00adform\u00aders. There\u00adfore, the trans\u00adformer hous\u00ading design is often cre\u00adat\u00aded hand in hand with train man\u00adu\u00adfac\u00adtur\u00aders to opti\u00admal\u00adly match the loco\u00admo\u00adtive and its trac\u00adtion motors to the envi\u00adron\u00adment. This applies to ener\u00adgy con\u00adsump\u00adtion and car\u00adbon emis\u00adsions, and also to tire wear and ground seal\u00ading. That is why shift\u00ading traf\u00adfic to the rails is cru\u00adcial in the medi\u00adum and long term to achieve cli\u00admate tar\u00adgets. But the real\u00adly big poten\u00adtial of rail trans\u00adport is the pos\u00adsi\u00adbil\u00adi\u00adty of sup\u00adply\u00ading clean dri\u00adve ener\u00adgy direct\u00adly to the dri\u00adves on long routes with\u00adout the need for a bat\u00adtery. There\u00adfore, inten\u00adsive efforts and major invest\u00adments are being made on all con\u00adti\u00adnents to improve and expand the elec\u00adtric rail net\u00adwork.<\/p>\n<p>The oth\u00ader side of the coin involves stan\u00addard\u00adiz\u00ading rails and rail\u00adroads across nation\u00adal bor\u00adders to build con\u00adti\u00adnent-wide, long-dis\u00adtance trans\u00adport net\u00adworks all over the world. In 2021, for exam\u00adple, the \u201cYear of Rail,\u201d this was the focus of the EU which, togeth\u00ader with the Asian mar\u00adkets, is one of the biggest investors in the rail of tomor\u00adrow. Even today, much time is lost on long-dis\u00adtance trips in Europe because loco\u00admo\u00adtives or even trains have to be changed at nation\u00adal bor\u00adders. That is now sup\u00adposed to change. For exam\u00adple, the Bren\u00adner Base Tun\u00adnel will lessen the strain on the road net\u00adwork across the Alps. \u201cThe goal is to trans\u00adport pas\u00adsen\u00adgers and goods in high-speed trains from Italy through Aus\u00adtria to Ger\u00admany start\u00ading in 2030,\u201d says Man\u00adtoan, who will ben\u00ade\u00adfit from the route him\u00adself if the Rein\u00adhausen loca\u00adtions in Italy and Ger\u00admany are brought a lit\u00adtle clos\u00ader togeth\u00ader.<\/p>\n<h2>Over countries and continents<\/h2>\n<p>The most ambi\u00adtious project of this kind is the Chi\u00adnese \u201cOne Belt, One Road\u201d project, often called the \u201cnew Silk Road,\u201d in which the expan\u00adsion of inter\u00adcon\u00adti\u00adnen\u00adtal rail links plays a major role. African coun\u00adtries such as Ugan\u00adda, Kenya, and Tan\u00adza\u00adnia are work\u00ading to rebuild old dis\u00adused rail lines from the Colo\u00adnial Era to cre\u00adate a Cen\u00adtral and East African rail net\u00adwork. And a glance at the Amer\u00adi\u00adc\u00adas demon\u00adstrates that huge invest\u00adments are planned for expand\u00ading rail trans\u00adporta\u00adtion there as well. All of this shows that even though the devel\u00adop\u00adment toward cli\u00admate-com\u00adpat\u00adi\u00adble glob\u00adal mobil\u00adi\u00adty is an enor\u00admous under\u00adtak\u00ading, the sig\u00adnal lights are green. The glob\u00adal mar\u00adket for trac\u00adtion trans\u00adform\u00aders alone is expect\u00aded to increase to a val\u00adue of around 750&nbsp;bil\u00adlion U.S. dol\u00adlars, which is more than four per\u00adcent growth since&nbsp;2018 (Unife World Rail Mar\u00adket Study). And these expen\u00addi\u00adtures are impor\u00adtant to be able to meet the high demand to some extent. At the same time, the ongo\u00ading switch from fos\u00adsil fuels to elec\u00adtric dri\u00adves means an even high\u00ader demand for elec\u00adtric\u00adi\u00adty.
