Mas\u00adsive solar ther\u00admal pow\u00ader plants, wind farms, and solar parks have already been built, and there is still plen\u00adty of room for more in the sparse\u00adly pop\u00adu\u00adlat\u00aded desert regions<\/p>\n\n<blockquote class=\"otto\"><p><strong> <big>3,800 kilo\u00adme\u00adters<\/big><\/strong> <br>\nis the length of the route <br>\nof the sub\u00adma\u00adrine cable<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h2>Clean desert electricity<\/h2>\n<p>For the XLinks project, solar and wind pow\u00ader plants with a total capac\u00adi\u00adty of 10.5&nbsp;gigawatts will be built on an area of 1,500&nbsp;square kilo\u00adme\u00adters in the Guelmim-Oued Noun region. Com\u00adbined with a bat\u00adtery stor\u00adage facil\u00adi\u00adty with a stor\u00adage capac\u00adi\u00adty of 20&nbsp;gigawatt hours, once com\u00adplet\u00aded it will ensure that ener\u00adgy can flow reli\u00adably to far-away Great Britain for an aver\u00adage of more than 20&nbsp;hours per day, where it can be pro\u00advid\u00aded as base load. The elec\u00adtric\u00adi\u00adty would then cov\u00ader eight&nbsp;per\u00adcent of the country\u2019s total demand. Four sub\u00adma\u00adrine cables will have to be laid over a dis\u00adtance of 3,800&nbsp;kilo\u00adme\u00adters past the Euro\u00adpean main\u00adland to bring the desert pow\u00ader to the island using high-volt\u00adage direct cur\u00adrent tech\u00adnol\u00ado\u00adgy.<\/p>\n\n<blockquote class=\"otto\"><p><strong> <big> 10.5 gigawatts<\/big><\/strong> <br>\nof elec\u00adtric\u00adi\u00adty is gen\u00ader\u00adat\u00aded by the <br>\nwind and solar parks in Moroc\u00adco<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>A new com\u00adpa\u00adny has been found\u00aded specif\u00adi\u00adcal\u00adly for this mam\u00admoth project in Hunter\u00adston, Scot\u00adland: XLCC. It man\u00adu\u00adfac\u00adtures the HVDC sub\u00adma\u00adrine cables with alu\u00adminum con\u00adduc\u00adtors and cross-linked poly\u00adeth\u00adyl\u00adene (XLPE) insu\u00adla\u00adtion and will also lay them on the sea floor.<\/p>\n<h2>20&nbsp;kilometers of cable<\/h2>\n<p>In the future, the plant will man\u00adu\u00adfac\u00adture cable lengths of 20&nbsp;kilo\u00adme\u00adters in one piece. Using joints, these will then be con\u00adnect\u00aded on the ship lay\u00ading them to form 100-kilo\u00adme\u00adter sec\u00adtions. The longer a cable or cable sys\u00adtem is, the high\u00ader the pow\u00ader of the test sys\u00adtem must be.\u201d For test\u00ading DC and AC cables, pow\u00ader fre\u00adquen\u00adcy with\u00adstand volt\u00adage tests based on the res\u00ado\u00adnance prin\u00adci\u00adple togeth\u00ader with par\u00adtial dis\u00adcharge mea\u00adsure\u00adment is now the stan\u00addard. The test sys\u00adtem is mod\u00adu\u00adlar\u00adly extend\u00adable and could even test cable lengths of up to 200&nbsp;kilo\u00adme\u00adters.<\/p>\n<p>This means that XLCC remains flex\u00adi\u00adble for the future, since it also wants to sup\u00adply sub\u00adma\u00adrine cables for oth\u00ader megapro\u00adjects beyond the XLinks project.
