A new technology from Maschinenfabrik Reinhausen makes it possible to provide it in substations. And it does so at the extra-high voltage level.<\/h3>\n<hr class=\"yellow\">\n<p><span class=\"initial\">Y<\/span>ou don\u2019t always rec\u00adog\u00adnize rev\u00ado\u00adlu\u00adtions at first glance: At the Schwan\u00addorf sub\u00adsta\u00adtion, not far from MR\u2019s Regens\u00adburg site, an over\u00adsized white plug is insert\u00aded into a sock\u00adet on 6 Octo\u00adber 2022. With this sym\u00adbol\u00adic ges\u00adture, Tim Mey\u00ader\u00adj\u00fcr\u00adgens, Man\u00adag\u00ading Direc\u00adtor of Ten\u00adneT Ger\u00admany, and Wil\u00adfried Breuer, Man\u00adag\u00ading Direc\u00adtor of MR, release the sub\u00adstation\u2019s new MSCDN sys\u00adtem for oper\u00ada\u00adtion. What the guests see dur\u00ading the sub\u00adse\u00adquent tour is part of the mod\u00adernization plans for the sub\u00adsta\u00adtion, which trans\u00admits elec\u00adtric\u00adi\u00adty from the extra-high volt\u00adage lev\u00adel to the dis\u00adtri\u00adb\u00adu\u00adtion net\u00adworks of the Upper Palati\u00adnate admin\u00adis\u00adtra\u00adtive dis\u00adtrict.<\/p>\n<p>What the guests actu\u00adal\u00adly saw on this day is noth\u00ading less than a cen\u00adtral key to ensur\u00ading grid sta\u00adbil\u00adi\u00adty for the ener\u00adgy tran\u00adsi\u00adtion. That\u2019s because the MSCDN plant in Schwan\u00addorf solves a prob\u00adlem that has left many experts scratch\u00ading their heads: Where will the sta\u00adbi\u00adliz\u00ading reac\u00adtive pow\u00ader come from when more and more con\u00adven\u00adtion\u00adal pow\u00ader plants are shut down? Because with\u00adout reac\u00adtive pow\u00ader, most of which was pre\u00advi\u00adous\u00adly pro\u00adduced by pow\u00ader plants, major prob\u00adlems arise. For exam\u00adple, when con\u00adsumers all switch on the stove, wash\u00ading machine and TV at the same time in the evening and plug the e\u2011car into the wall\u00adbox, they put a strain on the grid.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\u201cMR also gets its pow\u00ader from this sub\u00adsta\u00adtion, so we\u2019re dou\u00adbly proud to con\u00adtribute our expe\u00adri\u00adence here.\u201d<br>\n<cite>Wil\u00adfried Breuer, Gesch\u00e4fts\u00adf\u00fchrer Rein\u00adhausen<\/cite><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Addi\u00adtion\u00adal reac\u00adtive pow\u00ader from the pow\u00ader plants then bal\u00adances out the grid volt\u00adage thus pre\u00advent\u00ading out\u00adages. Decen\u00adtral\u00adized gen\u00ader\u00ada\u00adtors like those in Feld\u00adheim or Nieder\u00adbobritzsch (read about them start\u00ading on page 19) do play a part in cre\u00adat\u00ading a sus\u00adtain\u00adable grid infra\u00adstruc\u00adture. But if we con\u00adsid\u00ader the ris\u00ading glob\u00adal ener\u00adgy demand and the time required for munic\u00adi\u00adpal, decen\u00adtral\u00adized con\u00adcepts, dif\u00adfer\u00adent tech\u00adnolo\u00adgies will be need\u00aded in the short and medi\u00adum term to keep the grids sta\u00adble in this tran\u00adsi\u00adtion phase. So who will pro\u00advide the required reac\u00adtive pow\u00ader?<\/p>\n<h2>Reactive power at all levels<\/h2>\n<p>This is what sub\u00adsta\u00adtions can do on their own with the help of an MSCDN sys\u00adtem. MSCDN stands for Mechan\u00adi\u00adcal\u00adly Switched Capac\u00adi\u00adtor with Damp\u00ading Net\u00adwork. When the load is high, the sys\u00adtem pro\u00advides capac\u00adi\u00adtive reac\u00adtive pow\u00ader, and when the load is low, it pro\u00advides pro\u00adtec\u00adtion against over\u00advolt\u00adage by auto\u00admat\u00adi\u00adcal\u00adly con\u00adnect\u00ading and dis\u00adcon\u00adnect\u00ading the com\u00adpen\u00adsa\u00adtion system\u2014which is already suf\u00adfi\u00adcient in many sit\u00adu\u00ada\u00adtions. \u201cNew oper\u00adat\u00ading equip\u00adment to replace the large rotat\u00ading gen\u00ader\u00ada\u00adtors in the AC trans\u00admis\u00adsion grid is essen\u00adtial for the ener\u00adgy turn\u00adaround,\u201d explains Thomas Br\u00fcck\u00adn\u00ader from MR\u2019s Pow\u00ader Qual\u00adi\u00adty (PQ) busi\u00adness unit which plans and builds MSCDN plants togeth\u00ader with OMEXOM. \u201cOur PQ spe\u00adcial\u00adists in Erfurt have already installed these sev\u00ader\u00adal times around the world and will also pro\u00advide reli\u00adable sup\u00adport in the trans\u00admis\u00adsion grid,\u201d says Wil\u00adfried Breuer.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_7961\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-7961\" style=\"width: 640px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-7961 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/onload.reinhausen.com\/de\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/25\/2022\/12\/ONLOAD_12_substation_Schwandorf_MSCDN.jpg\" alt=\"onload 12 substation schwandorf energy transition turnaround blindleistung\" width=\"640\" height=\"427\"><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-7961\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">They stand there like a bul\u00adwark \u2014 the units of the MSCDN sys\u00adtem that make the sub\u00adsta\u00adtion fit for volt\u00adage fluc\u00adtu\u00ada\u00adtions.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>This is because in recent years the experts have expand\u00aded the MR prod\u00aduct port\u00adfo\u00adlio and fur\u00adther devel\u00adoped the sys\u00adtems so that they can also with\u00adstand the require\u00adments in the trans\u00admis\u00adsion net\u00adwork at high and extra-high volt\u00adage lev\u00adels. Breuer: \u201cAs a result, we can already imple\u00adment effec\u00adtive solu\u00adtions for volt\u00adage reg\u00adu\u00adla\u00adtion for three of the four Ger\u00adman trans\u00admis\u00adsion sys\u00adtem oper\u00ada\u00adtors; such as here in Schwan\u00addorf, but also, for exam\u00adple, for Ampri\u00adon at the Sechtem sub\u00adsta\u00adtion near Born\u00adheim or for 50Hertz in Bad Lauch\u00adst\u00e4dt.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>A substation for the future<\/h2>\n<p>As the largest of the four Ger\u00adman trans\u00admis\u00adsion sys\u00adtem oper\u00ada\u00adtors, Ten\u00adneT has already ordered three MSCDN plants from MR to mod\u00adern\u00adize the grid infra\u00adstruc\u00adture and ensure sta\u00adbil\u00adi\u00adty. The first of the three plants has start\u00aded oper\u00ada\u00adtion at the Schwan\u00addorf sub\u00adsta\u00adtion. It con\u00adnects a total of four extra-high volt\u00adage lines with the dis\u00adtri\u00adb\u00adu\u00adtion net\u00adworks and is cru\u00adcial for sup\u00adply\u00ading the entire region. Thanks to the new plant, the region will be spared the sce\u00adnar\u00adios that British reg\u00adu\u00adla\u00adtors warned about in the media this year: that the col\u00adlec\u00adtive boil\u00ading of water for five o\u2019clock tea could soon pro\u00advoke pow\u00ader cuts across the coun\u00adtry.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\u201cIn imple\u00adment\u00ading the ener\u00adgy tran\u00adsi\u00adtion, we also depend on inno\u00adv\u00ada\u00adtive devel\u00adop\u00adments.\u201d<br>\n<cite>Tim Mey\u00ader\u00adj\u00fcr\u00adgens, Gesch\u00e4fts\u00adf\u00fchrer Ten\u00adneT<\/cite><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>That\u2019s why Ten\u00adneT is plan\u00adning even more modern\u00adization mea\u00adsures in Schwan\u00addorf. Tim Mey\u00ader\u00adj\u00fcr\u00adgens, Ten\u00adneT CEO, explains: \u201cEvery mile\u00adstone helps us achieve the ambi\u00adtious cli\u00admate pol\u00adi\u00adcy goals of Bavaria and inte\u00adgrate more renew\u00adables into the grid.\u201d Because prob\u00adlems also arise on the oth\u00ader side when there is plen\u00adty of solar ener\u00adgy avail\u00adable in the sun\u00adny mid\u00adday hours, but con\u00adsumers do not need it. Ten\u00adneT is invest\u00ading around 68 mil\u00adlion euros in the project\u20142.5 mil\u00adlion in MR\u2019s MSCDN plant alone. In addi\u00adtion, all switchgear and steel struc\u00adtures there will be suc\u00adces\u00adsive\u00adly dis\u00adman\u00adtled and rebuilt, and the site area will be expand\u00aded by 3,500 square meters. These and oth\u00ader ren\u00ado\u00adva\u00adtions will also help to trans\u00adport region\u00adal\u00adly pro\u00adduced wind and solar pow\u00ader to the con\u00adsump\u00adtion cen\u00adters.<\/p>\n<div class=\"wpcmsdev-box\">\n<div class=\"box-content\">\n<h5>REINHAUSEN INSIDE<\/h5>\n<hr>\n<p>The MSCDN sys\u00adtem is designed as a C\u2011type fil\u00adter cir\u00adcuit with divid\u00aded capac\u00adi\u00adtances and damp\u00ading resis\u00adtance. Its choke coils are designed so effi\u00adcient\u00adly that they gen\u00ader\u00adate only low loss\u00ades. The sys\u00adtem can be phase-selec\u00adtive\u00adly acti\u00advat\u00aded via a spe\u00adcial pow\u00ader switch. Com\u00adplex dynam\u00adic sys\u00adtems such as the STATCOM (pow\u00ader con\u00advert\u00ader) and sta\u00adt\u00adic reac\u00adtive pow\u00ader com\u00adpen\u00adsators (SVC) are used for step\u00adless con\u00adtrol.<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-7962 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/onload.reinhausen.com\/de\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/25\/2022\/12\/MSCDN-Funktionsprinzip.png\" alt=\"MSCDN substation energy transistion Onload \" width=\"327\" height=\"327\"><\/p>\n<h3 style=\"clear: none\">Wind farms as power plants<\/h3>\n<p style=\"clear: none\">Renew\u00adable gen\u00ader\u00ada\u00adtors will replace con\u00adven\u00adtion\u00adal pow\u00ader plants in their pro\u00adduc\u00adtion of ener\u00adgy\u2005\u2014\u2005but not in their func\u00adtion as providers of reac\u00adtive pow\u00ader. At least not yet. Because in order to con\u00advert volatile gen\u00ader\u00ada\u00adtors into pow\u00ader plants, they would have to be cou\u00adpled and equipped with a reg\u00adu\u00adlat\u00ading head sta\u00adtion, and con\u00adnect\u00aded to the grid core via a DC grid. Plans that go hand in hand with TenneT\u2019s grid expan\u00adsion projects, as Mey\u00ader\u00adj\u00fcr\u00adgens reveals: \u201cWe at Ten\u00adneT are aware of our respon\u00adsi\u00adbil\u00adi\u00adty and will there\u00adfore invest at least 60 bil\u00adlion euros in the ener\u00adgy tran\u00adsi\u00adtion by 2030.\u201d Of this, 0.5\u20141.5 bil\u00adlion per year will be spent on grid expan\u00adsion in Bavaria alone. Wil\u00adfried Breuer adds: \u201cWe are pleased to strength\u00aden and con\u00adtin\u00adue our coop\u00ader\u00ada\u00adtion with Ten\u00adneT TSO.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The next MSCDN plants will soon be erect\u00aded at Lan\u00addes\u00adber\u00adgen in Low\u00ader Sax\u00adony and at UW W\u00fcr\u00adgau in Bavaria where MR tech\u00adnol\u00ado\u00adgy is also being used in new phase-shift\u00ading trans\u00adform\u00aders (read more about this from page 34). So things are moving\u2014and at all lev\u00adels. \u201cUntil just a few years ago, the big play\u00aders seemed quite hes\u00adi\u00adtant, because although it was clear for many aspects of the ener\u00adgy tran\u00adsi\u00adtion \u201cwhat\u201d need\u00aded to be done, the tech\u00adnol\u00ado\u00adgy for the \u201chow\u201d was still lack\u00ading in some cas\u00ades or was still very cost-inten\u00adsive,\u201d explains Br\u00fcck\u00adn\u00ader.
