This results from a sim\u00adple cal\u00adcu\u00adla\u00adtion: If a house\u00adhold switch\u00ades from con\u00adven\u00adtion\u00adal ener\u00adgy sources to renew\u00adable ones, its demand is reduced from an aver\u00adage of 24 MWh for heat\u00ading, elec\u00adtric\u00adi\u00adty and mobil\u00adi\u00adty (e\u2011vehicles) to a manage\u00adable 10 MWh. The rea\u00adson for this is that around the 50th par\u00adal\u00adlel, solar radi\u00ada\u00adtion pro\u00advides approx\u00adi\u00admate\u00adly 1 MWh of ener\u00adgy per square meter per year. This means that the solar ener\u00adgy for such a house\u00adhold already falls on 10 square meters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And what about at night or when there are lulls last\u00ading weeks? Stor\u00adage for hot water, bat\u00adtery stor\u00adage for elec\u00adtric\u00adi\u00adty, and long-term stor\u00adage for wind ener\u00adgy (for exam\u00adple, through hydrol\u00ady\u00adsis with recon\u00adver\u00adsion via fuel cells) bring the ener\u00adgy from wind and sun into the evening hours, win\u00adter, and wind\u00adless peri\u00adods. A heat reser\u00advoir in the ground can also be used as long-term stor\u00adage for the cold sea\u00adson in com\u00adbi\u00adna\u00adtion with heat pumps and solar ther\u00admal ener\u00adgy. If the effi\u00adcien\u00adcy of renew\u00adables is deter\u00admined by how much sur\u00adface area they require for the same yield, pho\u00adto\u00advoltaics and solar ther\u00admal ener\u00adgy achieve a yield of between 200 and 600 kWh\/m\u00b2a of elec\u00adtri\u00adcal or ther\u00admal ener\u00adgy, i.e. a very good 20\u201360 per\u00adcent yield on the sur\u00adface area. Wind pow\u00ader still achieves 20\u201360 kWh\/m\u00b2a. In the case of pure solar sup\u00adply with pho\u00adto\u00advoltaics, 50 square meters per house\u00adhold would thus be suf\u00adfi\u00adcient, or 500 square meters of wind sur\u00adface.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The best renewables<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The cal\u00adcu\u00adla\u00adtion shows how lit\u00adtle area is actu\u00adal\u00adly required to cov\u00ader our needs with the solar and wind ener\u00adgy that is avail\u00adable free of charge. And yet we pay for ener\u00adgy sources that for\u00admal\u00adly count as renew\u00adables but require immense\u00adly more land. We are talk\u00ading here about bio\u00adgas and bio\u00adfu\u00adels from agri\u00adcul\u00adtur\u00adal crops. To obtain sig\u00adnif\u00adi\u00adcant amounts of ener\u00adgy from these, huge areas of arable land have to be cul\u00adti\u00advat\u00aded at great expense, using oth\u00ader valu\u00adable raw mate\u00adri\u00adals. This makes them by far the most inef\u00adfi\u00adcient renew\u00adables with an effi\u00adcien\u00adcy of only 0.6\u20135.9 kWh\/m\u00b2a. This high land con\u00adsump\u00adtion is not economical\u2014especially not in times of rapid\u00adly decreas\u00ading bio\u00addi\u00adver\u00adsi\u00adty and glob\u00adal\u00adly com\u00adpro\u00admised food sup\u00adplies. Only where bio\u00admass is pro\u00adduced any\u00adway, for exam\u00adple as an agri\u00adcul\u00adtur\u00adal by-prod\u00aduct, is it a valu\u00adable ener\u00adgy source that can sup\u00adport munic\u00adi\u00adpal ener\u00adgy sup\u00adplies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But it is not only the small area required that makes wind and sun the best ener\u00adgy sources. If a house\u00adhold switch\u00ades from gas heat\u00ading, whether fos\u00adsil or bio, to a heat pump, the ener\u00adgy yield is tripled, because from 1 MWh of elec\u00adtri\u00adcal ener\u00adgy, it achieves 3 MWh of ther\u00admal ener\u00adgy for heat\u00ading and hot water. An elec\u00adtri\u00adcal\u00adly pow\u00adered vehi\u00adcle also improves the ener\u00adgy bal\u00adance by a fac\u00adtor of about 3: For a pas\u00adsen\u00adger car, 15 kWh per 100 km is cal\u00adcu\u00adlat\u00aded, which is equiv\u00ada\u00adlent to two liters of gaso\u00adline. This results in the sig\u00adnif\u00adi\u00adcant\u00adly low\u00ader demand of 10 MWh instead of 24 MWh. Sys\u00adtems for indus\u00adtri\u00adal use achieve an even high\u00ader yield from geot\u00adher\u00admal ener\u00adgy. Switch\u00ading to heat pumps, for exam\u00adple, there\u00adfore also sig\u00adnif\u00adi\u00adcant\u00adly reduces ener\u00adgy require\u00adments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The self-sufficient municipality<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Indi\u00advid\u00adual house\u00adholds can hard\u00adly imple\u00adment this con\u00adver\u00adsion on their own, but numer\u00adous projects show that munic\u00adi\u00adpal solu\u00adtions can pro\u00advide a secure and com\u00adpre\u00adhen\u00adsive sup\u00adply based on renew\u00adables. Mod\u00adern plant tech\u00adnol\u00ado\u00adgy also con\u00adtributes to this. In addi\u00adtion to com\u00adbined heat and pow\u00ader plants, heat pumps and ener\u00adgy stor\u00adage sys\u00adtems, mod\u00adern con\u00advert\u00ader sys\u00adtems are also part of the pow\u00ader sup\u00adply. As ener\u00adgy sources are increas\u00ading\u00adly locat\u00aded at the munic\u00adi\u00adpal lev\u00adel, the ener\u00adgy sup\u00adply will become more secure and sta\u00adble. This par\u00adtic\u00adu\u00adlar\u00adly applies to the pow\u00ader sup\u00adply net\u00adworks, which can also be oper\u00adat\u00aded autonomous\u00adly or as an emer\u00adgency pow\u00ader sup\u00adply in the event of a net\u00adwork fail\u00adure. It fol\u00adlows from this: A sus\u00adtain\u00adable ener\u00adgy sup\u00adply must pro\u00adtect raw materials\u2014and this includes the land\u00adscape, the raw mate\u00adr\u00adi\u00adal \u201csur\u00adface area\u201d, so to speak. Solar and wind pow\u00ader with a com\u00admu\u00adnal approach are by far the most effi\u00adcient solu\u00adtion for this in math\u00ade\u00admat\u00adi\u00adcal terms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\">\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">AREA AND EFFICIENCY<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The dif\u00adfer\u00adences in terms of effi\u00adcient use of land for ener\u00adgy pro\u00adduc\u00adtion are enor\u00admous: While solar ther\u00admal ener\u00adgy in our lat\u00adi\u00adtudes needs about 1.7 m<sup>2<\/sup> of land to pro\u00adduce 1 MWh\/year, biodiesel from canola requires 500 m<sup>2<\/sup> of cul\u00adti\u00advat\u00aded land. The sun pro\u00advides 1 MWh of ener\u00adgy per m<sup>2<\/sup>.
