I. The gamble<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

When RHONA learned that the Nor\u00adwe\u00adgian state-owned com\u00adpa\u00adny Statkraft required a 100\/133 MVA pow\u00ader trans\u00adformer, Car\u00adlo Savoy and Julio Queza\u00adda, Indus\u00adtri\u00adal Man\u00adag\u00ader and Engi\u00adneer\u00ading Man\u00adag\u00ader respec\u00adtive\u00adly, were enthu\u00adsi\u00adas\u00adtic. RHONA has 60 years of his\u00adto\u00adry in the con\u00adstruc\u00adtion of trans\u00adform\u00aders and, in addi\u00adtion to stan\u00addard net\u00adwork trans\u00adform\u00aders for Chile\u2019s high-volt\u00adage net\u00adworks, it also equips the fish\u00ading, min\u00ading and log\u00adging indus\u00adtries with dis\u00adtri\u00adb\u00adu\u00adtion, medi\u00adum pow\u00ader and pow\u00ader trans\u00adform\u00aders, but to date the max\u00adi\u00admum pow\u00ader man\u00adu\u00adfac\u00adtured was 90 MVA.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A trans\u00adformer of the pow\u00ader class that Statkraft want\u00aded had nev\u00ader been built in all of Chile: an inter\u00adest\u00ading chal\u00adlenge. On the oth\u00ader hand, RHONA has about 300 expe\u00adri\u00adenced employ\u00adees, many of them with more than 20 years of expe\u00adri\u00adence in trans\u00adformer con\u00adstruc\u00adtion. And its plant in Vi\u00f1a del Mar, a coastal par\u00adadise in cen\u00adtral Chile, could well reach the nec\u00ades\u00adsary capac\u00adi\u00adty. \u201cAfter a thor\u00adough analy\u00adsis, our answer was: yes, we can and we want to do it; let\u2019s win the ten\u00adder!\u201d says Queza\u00adda.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

II. The project<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The Nor\u00adwe\u00adgian com\u00adpa\u00adny Statkraft plays at the interna\u00adtional pin\u00adna\u00adcle when it comes to ambi\u00adtious hydro\u00adelec\u00adtric and wind pow\u00ader projects. In Chile, the group is cur\u00adrent\u00adly build\u00ading three wind farms in the south of the con\u00adti\u00adnent between the Pacif\u00adic Ocean and the Andes. This will bring a total gen\u00ader\u00ada\u00adtion capac\u00adi\u00adty of more than 100 megawatts from renew\u00adable sources to the grid. One of the parks is being built near Litueche, an hour and a half dri\u00adve south of the cap\u00adi\u00adtal, San\u00adti\u00ada\u00adgo de Chile. To do this, Statkraft required RHONA to sup\u00adply a state-of-the-art pow\u00ader trans\u00adformer that would not only oper\u00adate reli\u00adably, but would also con\u00adstant\u00adly demon\u00adstrate this by using mon\u00adi\u00adtor\u00ading sys\u00adtems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

III. The competition<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

How\u00adev\u00ader, con\u00adtracts in the ener\u00adgy sec\u00adtor in Chile are not sim\u00adply entered into between two com\u00adpa\u00adnies; rather the nation\u00adal ener\u00adgy author\u00adi\u00adty car\u00adries out a glob\u00adal bid\u00adding process. Queza\u00adda says: \u201cIn Chile we have a very open econ\u00ado\u00admy; there are basi\u00adcal\u00adly no tar\u00adiffs or any oth\u00ader trade bar\u00adri\u00aders for for\u00adeign com\u00adpa\u00adnies. That is why Chilean com\u00adpa\u00adnies have to be lead\u00aders\u2009\u2014\u2009in both qual\u00adi\u00adty and price.\u201d Queza\u00adda called his long\u00adtime sup\u00adpli\u00ader and part\u00adner MR to dis\u00adcuss the sit\u00adu\u00ada\u00adtion. On the oth\u00ader end of the line was Fil\u00adipe Madeira, MR Sales Direc\u00adtor in S\u00e3o Paulo. He was quick to get down to busi\u00adness and he want\u00aded RHONA to come out on top.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Madeira recalls: \u201cWe offered to help RHONA not only with the on-load tap-chang\u00ader, but also with the engi\u00adneer\u00ading of the mon\u00adi\u00adtor\u00ading sys\u00adtem, includ\u00ading the sen\u00adsors and relat\u00aded soft\u00adware.\u201d Queza\u00adda com\u00adments: \u201cBasi\u00adcal\u00adly, it was clear that we would choose an MR on-load tap-chang\u00ader again. Regard\u00ading sen\u00adsor and mon\u00adi\u00adtor\u00ading technol\u00adogy, we also looked at oth\u00ader sup\u00adpli\u00aders, but in the end it seemed bet\u00adter to plan from a sin\u00adgle source because the sys\u00adtems are coor\u00addi\u00adnat\u00aded.\u201d And there are also sur\u00adpris\u00ading details: \u201cMR\u2019s ETOS\u00ae sys\u00adtem soft\u00adware is based on the open source oper\u00adat\u00ading sys\u00adtem Lin\u00adux. There is no license fee and this allows the cus\u00adtomer to per\u00adform mon\u00adi\u00adtor\u00ading very eas\u00adi\u00adly via brows\u00ader. We liked that.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

IV. The decision<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The plans and doc\u00adu\u00adments had been sub\u00admit\u00adted, award day was approach\u00ading, and one com\u00adpeti\u00adtor was still in the run\u00adning. In the end, RHONA con\u00advinced by both the price and the tech\u00adnolo\u00adgies pro\u00advid\u00aded. And it also earned points for its prox\u00adim\u00adi\u00adty to the wind farm, as the ten\u00adder notice attached great impor\u00adtance to speed of ser\u00advice. The deci\u00adsion was made. \u201cWe won,\u201d recalls Queza\u00adda. \u201cOf course, we were very hap\u00adpy. But the next moment we thought: Now we have a good prob\u00adlem \u2026 we have to build it\u201d, says Car\u00adlo Savoy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

V. The device<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt\u201d (the device) would end up weigh\u00ading 140 tons, have an effi\u00adcien\u00adcy of 99.65\u2009% and oper\u00adate at less than 61 deci\u00adbels, and it would be the largest pow\u00ader trans\u00adformer ever man\u00adufactured in all of Chile. But first, the RHONA team had to decide how to do it. \u201cInstead of using an anchor for the cov\u00ader, as is tra\u00addi\u00adtion\u00adal, we decid\u00aded to build the trans\u00adformer with a bell-type tank, as this was the best option giv\u00aden the final size and weight.\u201d Savoy had his plant equipped with new man\u00adu\u00adfac\u00adtur\u00ading struc\u00adtures to han\u00addle the big trans\u00adformer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

With the con\u00adstruc\u00adtion of the 100\/133 MVA trans\u00adformer, the Chileans have gained enough self-con\u00adfi\u00addence to now set their sights on inter\u00adna\u00adtion\u00adal mar\u00adkets. \u00a9 Rhona<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

What required more atten\u00adtion was the man\u00adu\u00adfac\u00adture of the wind\u00ading and the tight\u00adness of the trans\u00adformer tank. \u201cIf even the slight\u00adest leak was found here dur\u00ading the final test, it would have been a big prob\u00adlem. That was my worst night\u00admare for months\u201d, he points out. By com\u00adpar\u00adi\u00adson, the mon\u00adi\u00adtor\u00ading and data con\u00adnec\u00adtiv\u00adi\u00adty part was rel\u00ada\u00adtive\u00adly easy. RHONA opt\u00aded for MR\u2019s cen\u00adtral mon\u00adi\u00adtor\u00ading and con\u00adtrol sys\u00adtem ETOS\u00ae which ana\u00adlyzes and eval\u00adu\u00adates all sig\u00adnals from the trans\u00adformer sen\u00adsors and trans\u00admits them to the Statkraft RTU remote con\u00adtrol ter\u00admi\u00adnal. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Online fiber optic tem\u00adper\u00ada\u00adture mea\u00adsure\u00adment using MSENSE\u00ae FO cap\u00adtures wind\u00ading tem\u00adper\u00ada\u00adture direct\u00adly in the wind\u00ading and in real time, allow\u00ading oper\u00ada\u00adtors to per\u00adform dynam\u00adic load man\u00adage\u00adment. Statkraft receives all of this and oth\u00ader dynam\u00adic per\u00adfor\u00admance data and analy\u00adsis on a con\u00adtin\u00adu\u00adous basis and repro\u00adduces it con\u00adve\u00adnient\u00adly in the brows\u00ader win\u00addow. \u201cA cus\u00adtomer like Statkraft would not place an order like this with\u00adout such a high-end con\u00adtrol sys\u00adtem,\u201d says Queza\u00adda.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The plant was com\u00adplet\u00aded at the end of 2022 and the largest pow\u00ader trans\u00adformer man\u00adu\u00adfac\u00adtured in Chile is now in a sub\u00adsta\u00adtion in the low\u00adlands, ready to feed the ener\u00adgy from the wind farm still under con\u00adstruc\u00adtion to the high-volt\u00adage grid.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

VI. The push<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Suc\u00adcess with the Statkraft project is now RHONA\u2019s pride and joy. \u201cNow we are play\u00ading in anoth\u00ader league and I think we have opened a new chap\u00adter in RHONA\u2019s six\u00adty-year his\u00adto\u00adry. We now want to con\u00adtin\u00adue with this push.\u201d Fil\u00adipe Madeira, from MR do Brasil, is also impressed: \u201cRHONA is still a com\u00adpar\u00ada\u00adtive\u00adly small man\u00adu\u00adfac\u00adtur\u00ader of trans\u00adform\u00aders on an inter\u00adna\u00adtion\u00adal scale, but they have tak\u00aden a huge leap in their devel\u00adop\u00adment in a short time.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

To fur\u00adther boost the busi\u00adness of large pow\u00ader trans\u00adform\u00aders, RHONA and MR want to expand their coop\u00ader\u00ada\u00adtion and build on the pos\u00adi\u00adtive expe\u00adri\u00adence gained in this project. After all, the switch to renew\u00adables is also increas\u00ading the need for large pow\u00ader trans\u00adform\u00aders in Chile, as well as for con\u00adtin\u00adu\u00adous con\u00addi\u00adtion mon\u00adi\u00adtor\u00ading. But Rhona now no longer only has its own coun\u00adtry in mind as Marce\u00adlo Ulloa, Com\u00admer\u00adcial Man\u00adag\u00ader, is pleased to announce: \u201cNow we are also tar\u00adget\u00ading the large US mar\u00adket where we know that demand cur\u00adrent\u00adly exceeds the pro\u00adduc\u00adtion capac\u00adi\u00adty of high-tech pow\u00ader trans\u00adformer man\u00adu\u00adfac\u00adtur\u00aders. We now dare to be of assis\u00adtance there.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
