In a Flash. Electricity from Wastewater

Anyone who takes a tour of the port in Hamburg will definitely notice them: The distinctive digester towers of the Hamburg sewage treatment plant. The plant cleans the entire wastewater for the approximately 1.7 million inhabitants and produces more energy than it needs itself. This is made possible by the digester gases that rise from the sewage sludge in the egg-shaped towers and which are converted into electricity by a generator.

In addition, there are three wind turbines, each with an output of up to three megawatts, as well as a 1,300 square meter photovoltaic system. And to ensure that the entire system runs smoothly, the treatment plant uses active filters from Maschinenfabrik Reinhausen.
