Ger­man grid oper­a­tor Ampri­on want­ed the largest and most pow­er­ful phase shifter in the world. For this to work at all, there first need­ed to be a rev­o­lu­tion in on-load tap-chang­ers.

In Den­mark, the first three pro­to­types of a com­plete­ly redesigned util­i­ty pole have been stand­ing since August. They could deci­sive­ly boost the expan­sion of the grids and thus the ener­gy rev­o­lu­tion as well.

The ener­gy rev­o­lu­tion and e‑mobility are dri­ving the demand for cop­per to unfore­seen lev­els. Mine oper­a­tors are there­fore expand­ing their pro­duc­tion capac­i­ties and tap­ping new deposits. To do so, they require a sta­ble sup­ply of elec­tric­i­ty and high pow­er qual­i­ty. Dis­tri­b­u­tion grids are a key ele­ment on the path to a ful­ly elec­tri­fied world. To pre­pare them for the chal­lenges of tomor­row, large-scale use of volt­age reg­u­lat­ed dis­tri­b­u­tion trans­form­ers (VRDTs) is the most effi­cient solu­tion. The third gen­er­a­tion of the ECOTAP® VPD® enables volt­age reg­u­la­tion to become stan­dard in dis­tri­b­u­tion trans­form­ers.

Volt­age reg­u­lat­ed dis­tri­b­u­tion trans­form­ers have already been used for many years around the world. We asked grid oper­a­tors and trans­former man­u­fac­tur­ers about their expe­ri­ences.

The actu­al ener­gy rev­o­lu­tion is tak­ing place in dis­tri­b­u­tion grids. That is where more than 90 per­cent of pro­duc­ers feed in ener­gy. A research project is deter­min­ing what dis­tri­b­u­tion grids will look like in the future. And it is based on grid-for­m­ing stor­age units from Rein­hausen.

The ener­gy rev­o­lu­tion brings the threat of unsta­ble pow­er grids with­it. There­fore, trans­mis­sion grid oper­a­tors des­per­ate­ly need a solu­tion. Togeth­er with its part­ner Omex­om, Rein­hausen is devel­op­ing opti­mized tech­nol­o­gy for sta­bi­liz­ing reac­tive pow­er — which will keep the pow­er sup­ply pre­dictable into the future.
